  • New Van ? 29 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I am replaciming my Isuzu trooper comercial in the next few months and Need the extra capacity of a large van (MWB medium roof.) I am self employed running a pressure cleaning and grounds maintence business. Most of my driving consists of very windy lanes and inclines coupled with farm trafic plus the odd motorway trip, so aceleration and tourque is a must.
  • Speedo Inaccuracies & Service intervals 12 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I've started this one though because I'm asking: Is it likely the mileometer is ALSO inaccurate? Has anyone done a, for example, 100 mile run calculated by GPS or somesuch and compared it with the odometer? If it's also out, then issues to be considered: Service interval of 12,000 miles.. Could be done at an indicated 13,200? Claiming Mileage from business/ government is inaccurate?
  • cavalier emissions 12 Aug 2005 (Forum)
hello again everyone here is another matter i need help with. my L reg 1.7 td cavalier is due for an MOT next week and i want to know about the emissions. i took my car for a run yesterday with my mate following behind in his car to see if he could see anything untoward that i could not see like if the lights were working etc. my logic told me that if the electrics were to give problems it would stand a better chance of showing on the move and also he was looking for any large amounts of smoke. when we got back he said that it was emitting a normal amout of smoke as you would expect from a deisel maybe less. what my question is does it matter about the volume of smoke?
  • A new addition to the family 8 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I'll knock the brakes into shape, service it with a change of fluids, put a high-level brake light in it and run it for a week or two before handing it over to daughter who lives 100 miles away in Nottingham. I'm hopeful that it'll turn out to be a good first car, what do you lot think? Hawkeye ----------------------------- Stranger in a strange land
  • Cheap but Safe 4 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Main thing is that it's safe, as she has just found out she's pregnant. It also needs to be reasonably economical (diesel or petrol is fine) and cheap to run. Just looking at a couple of second hand car supermarkets, it looks like you can pick up and old astra/vectra/focus/mondeo for somewhere near £3k, but all have mileage around the 80k+ mark and most are about 5 years old.
  • Can a ball joint wear out in 10k miles? 21 Jun 2005 (Forum)
So, my question is, can a ball joint go from good to "hanging" in 10k miles or are the garage at it? They also want to change the anti-roll bar link as well as it runs through the ball joint. Also, the garage are charging me £11 per litre for oil. This garage used to be good, but I'm not 100% sure any more. I've asked them not to change it so I can seek a 2nd opinion.
  • Mondeo or Titanic 6 Jun 2005 (Forum)
This smoothed out after a minute or so and a test drive revealed that I had full power and tubo boost back again. The car runs fine now but it is still lumpy on a cold start with loads of blue smoke. There is no evidence of a cracked head or dodgy gasket in the water or oil. Could it be that I have maybe bent a con rod or just wiped out a glow plug.
  • VW Golf MK3 Auto Transmission 28 May 2005 (Forum)
When cold the level should be at the bottom of the dipstick and when warm between the max/min marks; conversely mine appears to be the complete opposite. On runs fluid appears to be dispended from the breather holes on the top of the gearbox housing. Since there are no plugs to keep the fluid in. The gear selections appear ok but the leaking fluid gives me cause for concern and I am unable to determine whether I have the correct fluid level.
  • Broken motorbike 7 May 2005 (Forum)
Honda CBR1000F has 3 times in the last 3 weeks flooded when it's been either(1)sat with the choke in on a cold engine at idle (2)choke has been put off when it should run again on a cold engine and (3)having been started on choke allowd to warm up 2 minutes then allowed to idle and blipped to 2000 rpm has died. Subsequent investigation has proved sparking at all 4 plugs when hitting the starter so it appears that the colis, leads and plugs are fine.
  • Mercedes 190e 2.0 auto idling problem 24 Apr 2005 (Forum)
The car (1991 2.0 litre auto running superb lots of power) starts fine from cold then as it warms up the idle is slightly erratic when stationary; when approaching junctions the car stalls. When it is re started it idles fine (although sometimes "hunting up and down" but not stalling - then drive off to the next junction and the revs will drop below 500rpm on final approach to a junction and then stall again.
  • Noisy Fiesta Engine - HELP! 29 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Hi Guys, My 1.3 Endura Fiesta Encore (mark 4, X reg) has an engine which has got more and more noisy (a kind of ticking noise on acceleration). I remember that once I took it for a service and they said the engine had run dry (I didn't know you needed to check oil back in those days - don't laugh too much). Now a local garage has said the engine is knackered (the car's done 55k miles from new, full Ford service history).

  • Servicing Costs! 26 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I just wanted to share something with you all, I bought a Volvo S80 a month or so ago and I wanted to give it a really good servicing (timing belt, pulleys, plugs etc etc). I got a quote from Volvo and it was nearly £1K!, I then went to a local family run garage that is near my Dad's house (who the old boy has used for years) and he did the whole job for £350. I picked up the car this morning and he spent about 1/2 hour showing me all of the old parts that he had replaced and then got the car on the ramps and showed me all of the work he had done and let me have a really good poke about.

  • 95 1.8 Diesel Fiesta bad starting 18 Mar 2005 (Forum)
It turns over fine and will go after about 15-20 secs emmitting a cloud of smoke when it fires up. The car runs fine when warm, no smoke, burns no oil, no noisier than it should be and still returns correct MPG. The new glowplugs have'nt really made any difference. The old old ones did'nt look that bad at all.
  • Fiesta tdci mpg 17 Mar 2005 (Forum)
This is on a 12 mile commute with 10 miles being spent in 5th gear at 50-60, and 2 miles on tickover in 1st/2nd gear in traffic. A run at 70/80 gave only 47mpg. It is amazingly consistent however, in being within 52 or 51 mpg for every tank used so far. The figures are based on brimming the tank and I have checked tyre pressures OK, and I pride myself on light-footedness.
  • VW Polo Knock 17 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Strangely it is not always there and though it happens more when the engine is cold that is not always the case. If I listen with a "stethoscope tube" with the rocker cover off and the engine running it seems to be coming from the region of the cams or hydraulic tappets of cylinder no.1 yet the cams are smooth and intact and I can find no excessive clearance between cam and tappet. In fact I can't find any clearance between cam and tappet on any of the cams with the cylinders at TDC (Haynes says there should be 0.1 mm but I can't find any).
  • Time to sell my Impreza? 12 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I have 2 options: 1, Pay the big bills and continue to enjoy the Scooby. 2, Trade the car in against something nearly new and significantly cheaper to run and insure (eg 04 Seat Ibiza TDI sport, £8995 @Motorpoint, then chipped to 170 bhp). Cost to change £3000. I will therefore end up with a car which is 5 years younger, has done 80k fewer miles, has 2 years warranty and has 90% of the Impreza's straight line performance for a net outlay of £1800.
  • Vehicle involved in accident and SORN 3 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Hello, The small company I run has two small vans on the road, mid December a car driver reversed into one of them, not our driver's fault, the van was undrivable due to bent front suspension. Van goes to accident repair centre (ACR), a week later the MOT expires, can't MOT due to accident damage, 31st Dec tax expires, we chase the ACR and the insurance company, initially we expect the van back mid Jan, end up getting it back this week, 11 weeks after the accident!
  • Stupid Adverts 24 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I know there have been previous BR threads on this topic, but why do the ad agencies who advertise cars and car-related products continue to treat us as simple-minded morons? Recent offenders: The Vauxhall Corsas running around and playing silly games. I get the feeling that Vauxhall ads over the last few years are in the hands of agencies who are being paid back-handers by other manufacturers. (TIC comment). The Mitsubishi Colts playing football.
