  • Hyundai Getz (2002 - 2008) - Servicing Costs 26 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I wouldn't put it past them to try and bump the price up. The car theoretically has another two years warranty to run, but I bet it's pretty selective in what it covers.

  • BMW 5-Series E39 (1996 - 2003) - 98 2.5 Car wont idle or its erratic 17 Jun 2009 (Forum)
My 98 523i wont idle, when first started unless you keep blipping the throttle it just dies, when it gets warm it will sometimes keep running but sounds like its off a pot or 2. Could this be a classic case of idle control valve being stuck? There are no fault codes etc.
  • Citroen C3 (2002 - 2009) - 06 1.1 Beeping Noise for no reason 14 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Hi my in laws have a C3 and it has started beeping every so often. There are no warning lights coming on with it. I have tried to replicate it and took it a run round the block. Nearly every time I pressed the brakes, it beeped. But not everytime. When I was sitting in the driveway and elected reverse it beeped. I have checked and all bulbs are working. Anyone any ideas??
  • Is more fuel used going one way or the other? 20 May 2009 (Forum)
My journey to work is made up of five or six miles chugging through town, 30mph limit and several junctions, followed by five or six miles easy run on a 50mph dual carraigeway. Am I likely to use more fuel going to work - when I do the poor economy part of the journey from cold, or going home, when the car is much warmer when it reaches the stop/start section?
  • Rear tyre wear 3 May 2009 (Forum)
I found it interesting to note that although I have a front wheel drive diesel the rear tyres have worn slightly more than the fronts, I was expecting it to be the other way around, the difference was only 0.5mm, is this a sign of something or just normal running?
  • KIA Cee'd (2007 - 2010) - Checking oil 26 Apr 2009 (Forum)
For the last 30 + years i have checked the oil level on the 20 + cars i have owned with the car on level ground and with the engine cold, ie in the morning before its been started. However the handbook for my Ceed states that you should run the engine to normal working temperature, switch it off, wait 5 minutes then check the oil level on the dipstick. Anyone got ideas why they say to do it that way ?
  • Backwards Technology Please 31 Mar 2009 (Forum)
I'm in the market for a cheap new (or newish) run-around. However, I'd like something which has more in common with cars from the nineties than the noughties. I like to open up the bonnet and not be blinded with science. So what, if anything, is still being sold as new, but has its roots firmly in another era.
  • FIAT Punto II (1999 - 2006) - Punto Head Gasket 13 Mar 2009 (Forum)
I recently bought a FIAT Punto with a broken head gasket and will be getting this looked at. However, I have been told there is a chance that the cylinder head may be cracked too. :( When running, the car gives out a lot of white smoke from the exhaust, and the temperature gauge fluctates wildly, and after a while the red overheating light comes on. How much would I be looking at if the head is cracked?

  • Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - 04 TDI Belt or chain. 28 Feb 2009 (Forum)
This weeks Beano (sorry, I mean Auto Express, though the former is probably more factual) has a Used Car test on the mk5 Golf. It says when talking about servicing and running costs "while all diesels and most petrol engines are chain driven so there's no need for a fresh cambelt" Is this correct? I thought they were all on a belt, and a 40k change interval at that!
  • Renault Laguna (1994 - 2001) - Replace or keep 23 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I have a R reg/1997 Laguna 1.9 turbo diesel. It has done nearly 130000 miles so the cambelt will need replacing soon for the second time.It still is a nice car to drive, very economical and, touch wood hasn't cost us a lot in repairs.Do I have the cambelt done and keep it or not have it done and just drive it till it goes or replace the car while it is still running well?
  • Subaru Legacy and Outback Petrol (2004 - 2009) - 2006 2.5 Spurious alarms 9 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Is anybody else experiencing a spurious alarm where the engine warning symbol on the dashboard lights up and the Cruise Control legend flashes without seemingly affecting the running? The episodes generally last one or two days at a time and then cease. This occurs periodically on my 56 reg Legacy and the garage has made huge efforts over 18 months into trying to find the cause.

  • Alfa Romeo 156 (1998 - 2005) - 01 2.0 Will an incorrect battery cause problems? 23 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Unipart say that plumbing in my car details with registration number, this battery is not the correct one for the vehicle and an 075 should have been fitted. Please, is there any consequence of running the car with this 096 other than the extra cost which I have now incurred in the purchase?
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 00 2.0 HDi Cold start issues. 4 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Hi, i need some advice. Recently my peugeot 306 HDi has had an odd issue on cold starts. It starts fine, but it runs very rough for a couple of seconds before settling on a normal idle. I'm not sure what could causing this, glow plugs, air in fuel system, battery? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, Craig.

As ever thanks for your advice.
