  • Help with Peugeot Dealer and dead car 27 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Now I have told the story, if you are not asleep, do you think I have any redress against the dealer, from what I have learnt since this happened I definitely would not have driven the car and I feel that the mechanic from whom I was seeking professional advice has been negligent in letting me drive off. what do you all think, and what can I do about it?? Moved in here from tech - wider audience...PU
  • Vauxhall Astra juddering 14 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Neither the dealer I bought it off nor the local Network Q can find a fault (just my luck it wont make a murmur for these people) but I've been driving for a long time and know when things are not right. I only realised the size of the problem when I Googled 'Astra juddering' and saw the number of complaints. Hence this entry to add my voice. If I'd seen this before I would have thought twice about buying this car.
  • Handbrake Calamity 21 May 2007 (Forum)
My question is this. The handbrake was on (most definitely, checked when I got in the car to reverse it back up the drive) but I had not put the car in gear. It is possible that the brake was not pulled right up to the limit as I have always understood this is bad for it but it was certainly almost there. Should I go back to mini or is this due to the fact that I did not put the car in gear.
  • Recommendations please: 325d v 330d 21 May 2007 (Forum)
Quattro Avant (which was a real disappointment after the 2.7 - I expected much more performance, but perhaps the 4wd drive train saps it too much...) and a 320d Touring auto which just gelled for me, being use to rear wheel drive I guess. I haven't tried these yet but could have a 325d or 330d Touring in manual form - the premimum for the 330d is not much and there is little penalty tax or fuel wise. but I have read the 325d engine is smoother - any views from those living with them?

Here is a brief summary of the faults: 1. Speedometer stops working intermittently. It will stop working while driving and start again of its own accord. The odometer also drops off while this happens and won't read any mileage until the speedomter starts working again. Also the speedometer sometimes will be reading like the car is moving when I'm stationary and the car is idling.
  • Clio 1.6 K7M Oil Leak ? 16 Apr 2007 (Forum)
We now have a couple of drips on the drive, looking under the car it is dripping off the sump plug, the lowest point, the front of the engine is now 'wetter' and it seems is slowing acumulating enough oil to run down and form a drip over time, the oil level is not noticably dropping.
  • £1,500 buying decision 23 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Hello all, the time has come where it looks like I'm going to have to buy another car, and I'm finding myself torn between a few options. I always value the advice I find on here, so I've come back for more. I don't drive much - really just a few long-distance trips a year and the supermarket once a fortnight - so I don't want to spend too much. Up to £1,500 or so. There's only a year or so before I'm likely to become a family man, so I quite fancy a coupé - of which there's quite a choice in the 10-year-old plus category I'm looking at.

  • Mr Loophole in the Sat. Telegraph 22 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Anyway, the newspaper recounts the story of a serial drink driver. He had been a police officer but left the force in disgrace after a drink driving conviction. He subsequently got a job as an ASBO officer. When he turned up to a police station smelling of drink, he was breathalysed and arrested for drink driving. His keys were in his pocket.

  • Buying an original mini - advice 4 Dec 2006 (Forum)
I was hoping a budget of around £500 as an original purchase price - not bothered about what it costs afterwards as it will be as and when I have the time/money to do things, however would like to be driving it within 12 months if its not road legal at purchase. Other than ebay, any other suggestions on sourcing a cheap mini? Thanks in advance
  • Three quick Qs about selling privately 27 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I don't have 'any driver' on the car's insurance policy - the people need to show me they have third party cover to drive other vehicles before they get behind the wheel of my car, don't they? Or am I being super paranoid? (Don't worry - they are both young women who are coming to see him, but if they bring anyone else with them I will be taking Dad/other half with me on the test drive...might do so anyway if they don't mind) Is there an ideal wording for a receipt, or is it enough to just write the amount, name, car, date and time?
  • Customer Care 28 Jul 2006 (Forum)
They got a good buy back price and so sold back to the delaer. the dealer subsequently offered to drive the family to the Airport to catch their flight - knowing they would never get business again. Guess what they drive in the UK ? A colleague considered dropping his 5 series company car to buy GS300.

  • Volvo V70 TDi classic - opinions ? 11 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I have noticed that most of these cars for sale have very high mileages ~100K+ Do these cars still have plenty of life left in them, or will they become complete money-pits.....? A lot of them also seem to be automatics - I quite like driving an auto, but have only had japanese ones so far (with no problems)- What is the reliability of the V70 auto-box like, especially at these sort of mileages. Is it a "good" box to drive (I know some autos are not great) I have read HJs backroom article and note the cambelt/water pump change, but are there any other issues on these vehicles that needs to be considered when buying.
  • Restored faith in my fellow man 3 Jun 2006 (Forum)
I had the stupidest accident ever on Monday, guy in front of me going onto a roundabout went, then suddenly stopped half-way over the line. I was already looking right & didn't realise he'd stopped & went into him at about 5mph. I drive a Golf mk4 and he was in a new 7 series (long wheel base). It felt like driving into a concrete wall! Damage to my car was as follows: cracked number plate, broken front light mounts & small scratch on bumper.
  • Tyre repairs 3 May 2006 (Forum)
As I mentioned in the recent 'Slow Driving' thread "Noticed a "pattering" noise while on the A38/M5 on Wednesday, stopped at Cullompton and found a clout nail securely stuck in my rear nearside tyre, no air loss, weighed up the pros and cons of putting the space saver on and being stuck at 50mph with reduced braking etc or carrying on with the nail at 50mph though with normal handling intact.
  • Skoda Rear Wiper 25 Feb 2006 (Forum)
As the car is still under warranty, I have returned it to a Main Dealer who could find no fault whilst they had the car. The fault seems to occur most in wet weather or driving up a steep incline or when a sudden change of direction is made or driving over speed humps. The main dealer has removed the trim to the tailgate and checked the motor and wiring to it, which proved OK.
  • Pug 306 1.8 8v XU7 Head gasket failure? 20 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Are XU7 engines known for head gasket failure? My wife drives 1995 XU7 1.8 8v Sedan that has given no problems to date (great car) but I decided to drive it to the airport to give it a decent motorway run yesterday. Starting it up from overnight cold it ran on three cylinders for a second or so as it staggered up to idle, and then cleared on to all four.

Driving up the M1 yesterday morning. Traffic heavy but motoring reasonably well. In a line of traffic which included Nissan Skyline, BMW M3 csl and Disco 3 and my Scooby. Pick up a flash of colour in the mirrors - yellow.
