  • help with insurance please 29 Dec 2010 (Forum)
Now, as it's not in Newcastle yet they estimate it'll be ready for collection 1st week in jan. Now the 7day insurance will run out midnight 6th jan- realistically I may not get it collected by then as that's the thursday.    So question is what do I do? My insurance is due for renewal 18th jan and have looked into it and got a better quote with a different insurer.
  • Rav 4 - Considering an SUV type 22 Dec 2010 (Forum)
I also frequently need to drive over quite hilly terrain to work , narrow lanes which can have surprising conditions, to get to work. But reasonable running costs, reliability realy important, and my buget is £10K ish plus trade in. Any one have any advice of any other considerations or if my 'ideal' something like a 3yr old RAV with 30K miles is realistic ?
  • Peugeot 307 SW - Starting problem 15 Dec 2010 (Forum)
This has been going on for six months and the problem occurs about twice a month, usually when my wife is stranded somewhere. I have taken the car back to Peugeot who have run a diagnostic and the want me to spend Euros (i live in France) 850 for a new battery (even though I have already just done this) and an Vanne EGA (some sort of valve?), I don't believe they have found the problem as it is so intermittent and I will be wasting my money.
  • Ford Focus 1.8tdci - focus tdci 1.8 issue starting when cold 27 Nov 2010 (Forum)
Fuel filter, glow plugs changed, injection cleaner put through as there was excesive black smoke out the back, Clutch was changed last year. Once it starts it runs like a dream with plenty power and then will start all day long, the car is fine starting in warmer weather. The only issue is when it has been left all night it takes throttle and excesive cranking to start.
  • Passat Mondeo - long term cost Mondeo or Passat 20 Nov 2010 (Forum)
I have had a 20V 1.8 Passat for the last 11 years which has given me pretty trouble free motoring at virtually no cost (I do all my own servicing) but it now needs more money spending on it than is worth spending. My questions are then this. Which is going to be the most reliable and cheapest to run in the long term: New shape Passat Tdi (around 06) Mondeo Mk3 TDCi (05-06 era) New Shape Mondeo Tdci140 (07) Originally I was looking to spend around £4k on the Mondeo but am now thinking it might be going to around £6k which will buy me either of the other 2 (at around trade price) Real life experience answers would be good
  • you decide - estate or mpv or van? 3 Nov 2010 (Forum)
It's ages since I last posted but am in need of opinions and suggestions for replacing my car. At present I run a 1997 Passat estate, worth only £700, I bought it only as a stop gap measure with the intention of replacing it after 6-8 months, which is now.  I travel about 5000 miles a year, surf as much as possible (maybe twice a week, boards I use are 7'3" upto 9'4"), and cut grass/tend gardens for family members which means I am constantly putting the seats down/going to the tip/moving something/standing half clothed in a car park.
  • Toyota Hiace 2.4D - Toyota Hiace temperature gauge problem, help! 16 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Dear All, sorry if this posted in the wrong place I'm a bit new to this forum but can someone offer advice, would really appreciate it - my 99 Hiace 2.4D van temperature gauge stopped working, it was gradual over a few weeks, not rising too high to nothing at all. It runs fine and other gauges good so not the fuse. I changed the temperature sensor transmitter for a new one, still the same, gauge not working. I earthed the lead to the sensor briefly to check the wiring and gauge, dial flew to the top so I know the wiring and gauge is okay.
  • Nissan Almera 2000-2002 Petrol 1.5L - Flat spot @ 1500 rpm 12 Oct 2010 (Forum)
It is more pronounced during the start of the jouney. The Timing chain was changed recently It did run out of petrol recently There is an oil leak after the engine stops on the left hand side of the engine from the head. (The mechanic feels it needs a head gasket replacement for stopping the oil leak) An engine management check returned a "Faulty Crank Sensor" but the mechanic feels it could not be the crank sensor but may be the timing chain etc.
  • BMW E34 cold start problem 12 Oct 2010 (Forum)
It will eventually start after several attempts and smells strongly of petrol and then it is fine for restarting, throughout the day it runs well. Somebody out there must have had this problem and know the answer I am sure it is something relatively straight forward. Help Please. John B

  • Ford Mondeo '09 1.8 TDCi - Engine fan noise after switching off 24 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Over the last few days I have noticed that after switching off the engine, there is a continuing noise like a fan running in the engine compartment, accompanied by a funny smell, and i can feel air (cool) blowing out of the front grill.  This goes on for a good couple of minutes.  I have only had the car about 6 weeks, and it's just started doing it the last few days.
  • Can moles swim? 7 Aug 2010 (Forum)
In exasperation, I got the hose pipe out and set the gun to a forceful spout and decided to fill all the mole runs up with water in an attempt to drive him back into the field. Then I wondered if he may drown:( I needn't have worried, he suddenly popped out looking very, very wet and ran into the hedge, leaving 3 cats and myself looking shocked!
  • BMW e46 320d - BMW 320d Turbo\Engine Problem 6 Aug 2010 (Forum)
When left to idle under some load oil is depsoited on the road from the exhaust. The oil level is gradually declining at a slow rate. The car however is running very well and there is no loss of pressure. Current thinking at the garage is that there is a problem with the head or the block more generally. It looks like the engine is generating 2-3 times the pressure that it should and is forcing oil through the system.

  • Second car 27 Jul 2010 (Forum)
My wife drives a citroen Berlingo 1.9D which is a fantastic family car (a double buggy fits in the boot not folded) and is quite efficient as it cant go fast due to its aerodynamical properties that are similar to a brick . I have a budget of £4k. Less is better, but if im just to end up spending more running a car its not worth it in my opinion. The cars i have been looking at include Renault Meganes with 70k miles 1.5D models and Citroen C4 HDI for under 4k. (autoquake) and from a local garage a 55 plate Vauxhal Astra 1.3 CTDi life 55k miles for just over £4k.
  • Mitsubishi Space Star - Has anyone used Autoscratch or similar? 21 Jul 2010 (Forum)
School run driver managed to sc***e the bumper of our second car today, and has agreed to pay for any repair. Being a reasonable sort of chap, I don't want to hit her with a vicious bill, so I was looking at one of these smart repair companies, who can repair such a scuff for £60-80 or so.

  • Mondeo TDCI 130 - Mondeo TDCI 130 (53) Problem 4 Jun 2010 (Forum)
I noticed just recently that every now and again, I will lose all power completely but the engine is still running. A good hard revving (with a massive cloud of black smoke with it) and I'm back to 'normal'. It recently passed its MOT which came as a great surprise! I want to get this sorted ASAP. Are there any other treatments I should be considering?
  • Accident Victim's Experiences 2 Jun 2010 (Forum)
As a recent victim of a hit and run accident, faced with the enquiries from the police, insurance company, and the courts I have been thoroughly disappointed with the way I have been treated. I wondered whether anyone else has been through a similar experience particularly as regards the accident investigation.
  • Citroen Relay (04) HDI - Citroen Relay van power loss/diesel leak 5 May 2010 (Forum)
Not been that bad since, but very low on power and leaking diesel somewhere in engine bay when parked (stops after a while). Dripping/running off front crossmember. Coincidentally (?) speedo stopped working recently too (suspect faulty/dirty gearbox sensor?) In neutral, with foot flat it doesn't get past 3000ish and has a muted stuttering sound.
