Dealer / head office attitudes, loan cars in event of problems..... Do they share any technology with other makers? Do they have a presence in France? Nearest garages are all significant journeys (despite living in Home Counties North), so any problems would not be just an inconvenience. -- pmh (was peter)
  • Need to remove 'car sick'!!!!! 22 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Help, Back in August during our trip to the South of France, my daughter was sick in the car. I thought I'd managed to clean it up, but noticed at the weekend (during a hoovering stint) that there is still evidence of the event. The car is a new avensis with the black cloth interior.
  • Citroen C5 Abroad 22 May 2005 (Forum)
However it is equiped with factory fitted Xenon headlights and Citroen have no way of modifying them for use on holiday in Right Hand Drive Countries i.e. France! They tell me that you should not use stck on converters or even stone guards due to the exra heat produced. Has anyone got any ideas how I can stay legal abroad? Dave S.
  • Badge thieves 23 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I thought this little game had died out about 12 years ago? Or is it in vogue again? The again, I am in France, maybe "fashion" takes longer to reach here... I s'pose the Volvo dealer will charge me 40-odd quid plus VAT for a replacement badge too... Didn't VW replace all theirs free in the 80s, to foster brand loyalty etc?!
  • Radar detectors abroad. 22 Oct 2004 (Forum)
However I do know that they're illegal in most of europe. If you use one and venture abroad, remember this: in France this morning someone I know has been fined 750 euros for having one. Yes, you read right: seven hundred and fifty. I've also heard of them being confiscated or destroyed. Be aware Ladies and Gentlemen.
  • Foreign Servicing 31 Mar 2003 (Forum)
As mentioned in my other thread (help with route planning) I am going to France for a weeks holiday, driving my Scenic dci. I have just realised that I will hit the 18,000 miles for its first service whilst I am there. I know buying cars is cheaper abroad, but has anyone any experience on whether I should try and get it serviced whilst over there?

  • Green Cards 18 Aug 2001 (Forum)
For several years and using two or three diffferent insurers, I have been refused green cards, with the allegation that the insurance certificates, which carried translations in a number of languages, were sufficient. I believe the police in France, at least, will not recognise these. What exactly is the correct practice? Can I insist on a green card? Has any contributor had a problem over this while on the Continent?
  • Which part of the country do we live in? 14 Aug 2017 (Forum)
Not seeking to pry or to infringe any data protection rules - maybe just which county you live in (or indeed country - I think we have some members in France). And of course don't answer this at all if you'd prefer not to. I'm in rural north Dorset, a mile from the Somerset border, in a village between Gillingham and Wincanton.
  • Death of diesel cars 12 Dec 2014 (Forum)
Recent news is that the mayor of Paris, along with our own Boris intend to ban all diesel cars in Paris and London by 2020. The french premier has also gone on record to phase out diesel across all of France, the home of cheap diesel where 80% of drivers drive diesel cars. No doubt it wont be long before more large cities and other countries make similar announcements. Might be a bad idea to buy a new diesel car before long?

  • French Autoroute Breakdown 11 Feb 2009 (Forum)
They had breakdown cover with AA, and BMW (manufacturer's cover) but neither covered them on the autoroute: They had to pay 150 Euros (cash, of course) to be towed off the autoroute to a point where their own breakdown insurers could assist. Having driven through France regularly for the last 20 something years, there's something I didn't know... sounds like I need to carry a breakdown fund of 150 notes!
  • Preparing For a Continental Trip 27 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Got the fluorescent jackets, bulb kit, fire extinguisher, documentation and warning triangle tucked away in the Hyundai coupe ready for my trip to Spain and France. What are the latest thoughts about headlights? I've set them to the lowest position in years past and sometimes used duck tape (after polishing the polycarbonate lens to limit the amount of stiction).
  • Why there is no British automotive manufacturer? 1 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I think we can't just argue over cost perspective citing India/China because similar economy countries like Germany, USA, Czech Rep, Spain, France, Japan etc. can all successfully run their own automotive business. So, what's been fundamentally wrong in Britain?

  • Citroen Xsara 1.9 diesel - load compensa 14 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Folks, I'm about to embark on a 1700 miles roundtrip to France and I took my car in for a full service in prep for the journey. The mechanic tells me that load compensation valve has seized and would cost between £300 to £400 to repair! its a Citroen Xsara 1.9 diesel.
  • Windscreen for Accord Diesel 13 Oct 2005 (Forum)
I damaged the windscreen of my car when I was in France and RAC Windscreens are unable to repair the chip and so I'll need a new screen. However, before I bought the car I recall reading in one of the reviews that Honda had fitted a thicker windscreen to the diesel models in order to reduce engine noise.
  • Camper Vans 19 Aug 2005 (Forum)
A colleague of mine is a mad keen cyclist and wants to watch the Tour de France at first hand. To do so you need to camp on the mountain halfway through a stage, so he wants a camper (doesnt fancy towing his caravan up the mountain). He has looked into renting a camper, but has been quoted £900 per week.
  • Laptop holdal/mount for a car 26 May 2005 (Forum)
Hi, Planning our summer holiday for the South of France, we have thought of taking the laptop with us so our daughter can watch some DVD films during the lengthy journey in the back of the car. The laptop is rather large for her lap (she's 6) so I wondered if there are any harnesses or mounts that utilise the front passenger seat for supporting the laptop or failing that some sort of tray/desk that can be used in conjunction with her car seat.
