  • Re-stating my position 8 Dec 2001 (Forum)
They\'re entitled to hold an opinion in the same way that everyone else is, but to push that opinion down our throats until we either capitulate and pretend to agree, or (more likely) we go away, is damaging to the forum as a whole, and in the long run defeats the object in that it effectively removes us as a voice which, however moderate and democratic, still has the strength of numbers. This is not aimed at you, Alwyn. It *is* aimed at IO (Independent Observer) in this instance.
  • Mercedes E240 2 Dec 2001 (Forum)
I stopped and got the coolant topped up, but although the heater isn`t cold, it certainly isn`t warm. The car does not seem to be running excessively hot, the major pipes at the top & bottom of the radiator are hot and the pipes to the expansion tank are hottish. Somebody told me there was a bleed valve somewhere. On the front of the radiator there is a vertical metal pipe which has a needle valve in it, looks like it is either for pressurising or beleeding something.
  • In the attic 29 Oct 2001 (Forum)
I was going to try to flog the car, but I can't really expect to sell it in this state. Which is annoying because it is a nice old car and runs just as well as it ever did when it was new. Such is life ....
  • Taxing a vehicle 25 Sep 2001 (Forum)
Recently bought a Golf (per recommendations here) and the tax runs out at the end of the month. The DVLA have already sent the new reg document so I took that, the MOT, old tax disc & insurance to my local PO to get a new tax disc to cover from 1st October (not usually willing to donate money to the government early, but will be out of the country most of the time well into October).
  • Overheating Peugeot 405 18 Sep 2001 (Forum)
Well, not overheating exactly but still a problem. I have an old Peugeot 405 1.6 GR manual that runs at its usual temperature when on the move but when stopped or at low speed (at the traffic lights, in a jam etc), the temperature gauge rises much more rapidly than normal. Within a minute or two, the fan cuts in and continues to do so constantly until the car is moving again, when it quickly returns to its normal temperature.
  • If only he'd bought a Volkswagen 13 Sep 2001 (Forum)
She then phoned to make sure they had had the fax and waited for the nice man to turn up and take it away. And waited.... Yesterday morning, the bank rang and asked why they had run up a five thousand five hundred quid overdraft. Oh, yet, there WAS a debit to the lease company. A day on the phone saw them go from "never received the fax" to "oh, yes, you're right" to "It'll take some time to sort out".
  • old jag heater fans 31 May 2001 (Forum)
The heater fan switch has 3 positions, HIGH MED LOW (and OFF of course) On mine the fan used to be perfect on the LOW position and was too noisy on MED and HIGH. Thus I never use the "auto" position. For some reason the fan now runs at MED speed whether the switch is on LOW or MED. (HIGH still works normally.) It does the same even on "auto" ie: it starts very fast and gradually slows till the right temp is reached but never goes below the MED speed.
  • Hot coil 30 May 2001 (Forum)
I have a 1275cc engine fitted in a morris minor. I am now on my thrid coil. The last coil and the new one run very very hot. The car develops a misfire and eventually stops. This is cured by a new coil. I have 2 connections to the +ve terminal and one to the negative. Someone suggested that some new coils are low voltage coils, that require a ballast resistor to remove 3 odd volts.
  • Dirt & water in diesel 11 Mar 2001 (Forum)
thanks Martin. ps My own 1995 Golf tdi (90 bhp ) has a plastic drain valve on the fuel filter to run off water etc but the Passat PD is a sealed system.
  • Buying Ex-Hire-Cars? 15 Nov 2000 (Forum)
The prices seem to be good - one W-reg Fiesta (a 1.25 Zetec) looked as new, and was on for just over £7,000 We're considering buying one to keep for several years, but how worried we should be... Obviously, there's a good chance the cars haven't been driven properly during the run-in period, especially as they've never been much above 40mph. (At least you can only over-rev in 1st gear!). Also, as the cars are being imported, are there any issues to worry about - will the V5 ring alarm bells to the next owner?
  • Hyundai i40 tourer 1.7 active 115ps - Reliability/Economy/Maintenance 3 Jan 2018 (Forum)
Being a private hire owner-driver, driving around 70,000 miles a year, and having bought my vehicle new in may 2014, I hope I can provide some useful general information about reliability and economy. My work involves only airport runs between the south coast and heathrow/gatwick,  and therefore consists typically of between 2 and 4 return runs a day, journeys of usually 80/90 minutes, almost exclusively on motorway/dual carriageway/A roads.

Getting back into cycling with an ebike 28 May 2023 (Forum)
The bike arrived in the middle of February but with short days, weather, work commitments and if I'm being honest with myself, depression, it took a while to 'get going'. But absolutely loving it now and making a point of going out on a Sunday morning for a decent run (weather permitting) of at least 20 miles, plus maybe a shorter one on a weekday evening. In addition, I did the run to my parents a couple of weeks ago as I had some days off work. The pleasure of powering up a steepish hill at 15mph while putting a fairly modest amount of effort into the pedals can't really be overstated!.

  • Advice on buying a cheap used family car? 17 Feb 2020 (Forum)
Mileage will be mainly short journeys to town (around 20 miles return (10 each way) with a tiny stint on a motorway) and maybe once a month a long motorway run to another city. This narrowed it down to a petrol. Annual mileage could be in the 7-8k range. I've been looking at a family car that has decent boot space (2 pushchairs) and is easy to maintain.
  • New car - making a shortlist 28 Feb 2016 (Forum)
It's not just a matter of height off the ground - she gets in and out of her Mini Roadster without too much trouble. Out of the running - Mercedes GLA, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Mazdas CX-3 and CX-5 - spare wheel not even an option and no space for one.  Sorry - that's a deal-breaker.  Must be something about makers beginning with M.
  • Saab - Time running out to buy one of the last 21 Mar 2013 (Forum)
With the last cars now being sold we expect an equally high level of interest from Saab enthusiasts.” The auction runs until 3 April and the cars can be viewed from Friday 22 March in Wallhamn, near Gothenburg. Details of each car can be found on the KVD website .
  • Audi A6 Avant - Car sold with misfire but garage reluctant to help 25 Oct 2010 (Forum)
This was all done and the car was sent to an LPG specialist in the local area. When I test drove the car before buying it seemed to run fine (tested on both LPG and petrol). When I took delivery of it it was virtually out of petrol and LPG - there was no LPG filling station on my route home so I filled it up with petrol and drove home running on that.
  • Daihatsu Skywing - Hub-Over-Disk Risk 16 Mar 2020 (Forum)
There now seems to be less brake drag, and less of a temperature rise, but there is STILL a consistent temperature differential between the passenger and driver side drive shaft end of about 10 degrees C after two successive 20k-ish night time runs. Driver Side front 43 43 Driver Side rear 33 33 Passenger Side front 52 51 Passenger side rear 33 32 Not as scary as the 90's I was seeing before (though I'll test a longer run) but still apparently consistent with a passenger side bearing problem.

I have submitted all relevant evidence to the Trading Standards and can only hope that they follow this case up before the greediness of these two chaps running this particular 2nd hand car dealership kills some poor sod. (Name of dealer deleted.)
