  • Rain sensing wipers/ new windscreen 23 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Hi Folks, I would be grateful for a bit of advice please. Driving under a bridge last night when a piece of masonry fell from the bridge and cracked my windscreen. I was considering replacing the windscreen myself rather than go through the insurance (and loose my NCD).
  • Hyundai Santa Fe 30k 7 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Original tyres 4mm still on front 6mm on rear. noticed that mpg jumped from 38 to 44 after 20k service, same has happened after 30k. Still a complete joy to drive either on motorway or country roads.
  • Peugeot 306 - Comfort? 4 Jun 2005 (Forum)
There's SEATS's about at the moment, and I quite like the 306's. So, what are they like? I'm just over 6ft, and I've heard the driving position is a bit dodgy and the pedals are at funny position...can anyone advise? Actually, if anyone has any info on these cars at all I'd be grateful - I've never really thought of getting one until now.
  • Why did you choose? 3 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Why did you choose the vehicle(s) that you currently own/drive? Was it the seductive velour material? Was it the 0-60 time? The top speed? Comfort? Economy? Price? Running costs? Some other reason? Having chosen, are you pleased with it? Did the main reason you chose it pale into insignificence when you discovered that living with it was a pain in other areas?

  • A free Porsche? 24 Apr 2005 (Forum)
He reckons he'll be able to run it for a year and sell it for the same price at the end of the year. Now apart from servicing, cost of cash etc this means he'll be driving round in an expensive car for free. I'm not so sure - surely it can't be done. I know people may pay extra to jump waiting lists etc, but once used don't Porsche's experience the 'normal' depreciation curve?
  • Mazda 6 diesel cutting out 23 Apr 2005 (Forum)
My Mazda 6 diesel (136 bhp) has a very strange intermittent problem. Sometimes on tickover it will just cut out, and while it does'nt seem to do it while driving normally, it is very worrying when you are at a junction waiting for a gap and it "dies" on you. It can be caught with the throttle if you are quick enough. I have even had the air-conditioning condenser mod done and it still does it!!

  • Trying cars for size 1 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Mrs faddy (5ft, short legs) and I (6ft, long legs), are looking for a car that is a reasonable compromise for us both for access to controls and visibility. We'll probably end up buying privately, but need to try out a few models for size, not test driving, just sitting and trying out seat adjustments. Would "car supermarkets" be a good place to do this? Do they have their stock unlocked so you could do this without being pestered by salespersons?
  • 1995 Rover 418 TD (square shape) 31 Mar 2005 (Forum)
On a drive back from the "Auld country" the old girl has developed a braking problem. As the brakes are applied it takes progressively more effort to stop and the pedal gets harder. After releasing the pedal the normal feel returns.I've tried to find a Haynes manual today but there doesn't seem to be one to cover this model (diesel) so I'm reluctant to fiddle about at the moment.Any help/diagnosis much appreciated
  • Motorway miles. 20 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Always confused when I read an ad. that states high mileage but motorway miles. What does this mean? Are they incinuating less wear and tear? The engine still runs when you drive on a motorway, you still brake. what about in heavy traffic? The clutch gets a hammering here too? And how do you get onto a motorway? I'd say doesn't make any difference at all. I'll always ignore an ad that says *motorway miles* Opinions?

  • Old car: (Nissan Micra) 20k oil changes? 9 Mar 2005 (Forum)
N reg Nissan Micra (K11 type) mileage: 69k I used to change oil filter on this car every 10k or 12 months, usually at MOT time. But I have changed jobs and now drive about 22k per annum. Just for arguments sake, would extending the oil filter change period to 20k damage the engine on a car this old? Mike.
  • French diesel fuel 25 Feb 2005 (Forum)
In the UK I generally use BP or Texaco and average 50mpg. In France I fill up with whatever is convenient at the time at we seem to average 55mpg. Driving conditions are similar, length of journeys perhaps a bit longer. A friend reckons it may be because the french may put more sulphur in their diesel, is this true?
  • A very light sentence... 21 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Story in my local rag yesterday: Lorry driver who turned his vehicle over on a bend whilst speeding, crushed a car coming the other way and killed the old chap driving it. He already had nine points for speeding offences, and the investigation into this crash found that he'd tampered with the limiter. He got 3 points and therefore a 28-day ban under the totting-up procedure.
  • LPG & Tax 16 Jan 2005 (Forum)
The reason why I ask is a nearby Morrisons supermarket were selling LPG at 29.9p/litre!, nearly a third of the price of diesel at 83.9p/litre. Should I be driving down to the nearest LPG converter?
  • Foglight & main beam abuse - the reason! 15 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Now I understand why so many people seem to be driving around with their main beams and/or foglights on all the time. It's all down to global dimming - the lastest terminal phenomenon scientists have discovered which is apparently going to wipe us all out if global warming doesn't get us first!
  • Lorry wheels in the air 8 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Driving round the M25 today, Mrs S asked me why lorries carry their spare wheels up in the air instead of somewhere else. Y'know, on a dual axle (sometimes on the tractor unit, sometimes at the back of the lorry), a wheel is about a foot off the ground and not in use.
  • Help - Alloy Wheels - Wheel balancing 1 Jan 2005 (Forum)
My question is - do alloys need wheel balancing weights? (If yes, why?) My Mondeo Ghia - bought new has not got any I noticed - drives fine. Thanks in advance.
  • Invalid carriage driven on a road 28 Dec 2004 (Forum)
A few days ago while driving in rush hour traffic in the gloom, I came up behind a poor old chap all doubled up over the handlebars of his invalid carriage and making his way along the gutter of a main road. Couldn't believe it.
