Rain sensing wipers/ new windscreen - Robert J.
Hi Folks, I would be grateful for a bit of advice please. Driving under a bridge last night when a piece of masonry fell from the bridge and cracked my windscreen. I was considering replacing the windscreen myself rather than go through the insurance (and loose my NCD). My car has those rain sensing wipers, so I was wondering if they are likely to add to the cost of replacement significantly ? Thanks

IIRC, windscreen claim does not affect your NCD.

The windscreen is usually more to replace since it has the sensor built in. The Renault system does anyway, not sure about other makes.

Robert - Had a new windscreen installed yesterday courtesy of Norwich Union. Excess was £60.00 and does not affect my NCD. Are you sure about your policy?

Looked like a pig of a job!

If you have fully comp. insurance then it will not and should affect your NCD if you claim just for the windscreen - check your policy man and if they do take awya your NCD then they're screwing you over, go elsewhere.

Hi Robert

Unless you have all the correct tools, adhesive, and expertise you will not manage this job as a DIY.
The rain sensor itself is not get replaced, just the lens, which usually (depending on vehicle) comes on the replacement screen.

If you have fully comp cover you will not (on 99% of polices) loose your NCD.

Thanks for all your replies everybody - I am all sorted now. I rang the number given by the my insurance company and was put straight through to a well known national windscreen replacement firm. Paid the excess and they are coming to do it on Monday. What was concerning me though, I have only had the car a couple of weeks and we have not had a drop of rain here in Nottingham, the salesman never mentioned it had rain sensing wipers when I bought it and it was not mentioned in the advertisment. It was only when I was looking at the crack I spotted the sensors and I was concerned that I had not mentioned this modification to my insurers. If it was going to cost a lot more to replace than a standard one, would my insures have got a bit funny about it. Mark makes a big thing about making sure you tell your insurers everything. Anyway, the girl on the phone told me there was only one windscreen that could be fitted to my car, and it comes with the bits for rain sensors, so I guess it must a standard fit (it is a new style Vectra by the way) Thanks again everybody.

The insurance company would probably be aware of the rain sensor feature from the car's year of manufacture and the particular model's specification.

PS

Better a bit of masonry falling down rather than the bridge itself...:-)
