Mrs faddy (5ft, short legs) and I (6ft, long legs), are looking for a car that is a reasonable compromise for us both for access to controls and visibility.
We'll probably end up buying privately, but need to try out a few models for size, not test driving, just sitting and trying out seat adjustments. Would "car supermarkets" be a good place to do this? Do they have their stock unlocked so you could do this without being pestered by salespersons?

Go to main dealers. Drink their coffee and jump in an out the cars.
WE even take the dog when trying out new cars for size.

Me 6' 3", my wife 5'4". We have done exactly as you described at trade sales in Slough. Found them to be very helpful and not pushy at all.

Once tried an old fiat X1/9 for size. had to be levered out by 2 people, much to the amusement of her who must be obeyed. Never again
WTM
BTW, lost some weight since then.

I once sat in a VX220 for the fun of it at Trade sales in Slough, because it was very low down, trying to get out of it inflicted cramp in my right leg!

This is what auto shows are best for. At an auto show a few years ago I was having a chat with a Mazda rep at their stand who tried on his sales pitch when he saw me checking out the previous shape RX7. I said that if I can fit in it, I will buy it on the spot. It was a laugh watching him trying to force the door shut against my shoulder after I wedged myself (partially) in the driver's seat. The door never latched, so I said the deal was off.

Supermarkets have the advantage of a wide range of makes. Saves a lot of leg work round the various garages.
