  • How economical could a car be made 22 May 2008 (Forum)
Some people in the group I socialised with got incredibly good fuel economy by modifying small cars with the BMC 'A' series engine, such as Minis, Minors and the odd A35. The basics seem to be a gas flowed head, small (was it 3/4" SU?) and raised gearing. Engines are more fuel efficient these days but this is offset by cars being much larger and heavier.
  • Bought a car with no docs & "classic" ins advice 12 Mar 2008 (Forum)

  • Designing `common sense` road features 15 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I once went down south and and ended up passing through a place that had a very complex multi, mini, roundabout system all connected together. Drivers no doubt well versed in its intricate rights of passage seemed to have no problems despite seeming a little jug like on detecting my slow, careful courteous (Yorkshire) attempt to fit in with them.
  • Daihatsu Fourtrak (1985 - 2000) - Fourtrak and Trooper - why no more? 6 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Many farmers and horsey types saw them as alternatives to Discoverys and swb Defenders for towing and there are plenty still around in either station wagon or van guise. Izuzu now sell the Rodeo pick up and Daihatsu have the Terios mini SUV, but neither company has come up with a directly replacement. Given the ongoing popularity of 4x4s, I am curious why Isuzu and Daihatsu have never launched replacements. Can anyone shed any light on this?
  • Cars - too big or what? 27 Jun 2007 (Forum)
The new mondeo is huge, well bigger than the old granada- which in its day was consdered a big car. The new twingo is the same size as the old clio. Its all brought into focus when you see a mini on the road now, and think "wow is that realy small or what" - when in its day it didnt seem that small. On a restricted island, is this trend sustainable? ------------------------------ T our V an M an TM < Ex RF >
  • Why is Dirt Brown metallic... 23 May 2007 (Forum)
While I'm about it, you can get a VW Beetle in a solid colour that must be called Mushroom Soup. And MINI do Pepper White. More like Full Fat Milk. Any other colours that you can't fathom why anyone would have chosen them?
  • No temperature gauge! 29 Jan 2007 (Forum)
But I do like to see how the coolant is warming up, and even more to see how the oil is warming up - as on my MINI Cooper S. Still, the BM has a 'fuel consumption indicator' and does have a fuel gauge thrown in too. Apart from this relative lack of instrumentation, the latest 3 seems a fine car.

  • Insurance - Sort of Lexus related 25 Oct 2005 (Forum)
I can put a 2.0 T S60 in and it quotes me £1200 but the 2.4T along with the Lexus asks me to ring. Are they going to tell me to sod off or do the digits on the site not extend that far? As a mini poll, I'll take guesses as to how much I get quoted for it tomorrow. I'd be happy with £1500-1800. Any advances?

  • Abandoned Cars 1 Feb 2005 (Forum)
We'd strip parts out of them like odometers and the steering wheel (obviously these days my father would be banged up for child endangerment by the health and safety lobby). I even remember having a complete wheel and tire from a mini in my room growing up. There seemed to be no shortage of abandoned cars back then. [/nostalgia] So is this a new problem or did we just live in a particularly bad area back then (South London).

  • Ford Fiesta Ghia 1.6 '03 Locked Steerin 12 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I have a 2003 Ford Fiesta 1.6 Ghia and when I pull away quickly (say at a busy mini roundabout) the steering 'feels' like it is locking giving the sensation of driving along tramlines. Over the past year I have encountered this 3 or 4 times and on each occasion it was whilst accelerating with the steering turned to the left.

  • Car engines 3 Aug 2003 (Forum)
I have been looking at second hand cars and have found that different car manufacturers use other manufacturers engines engines. For example, Citroen use the same HDi engine as Pugs, The mini diesel uses a yaris engine, seat use VW engines, vauxhall cavalier diesels were suburu diesels etc. The question is: where can I find information about every engine which is shared with other manufacturers or can people post their knowledge of engines shared.
  • Cartel? 20 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Over in technical I started a dicsussion about getting a new car. After a long a laborious process I've decided on a MINI, and probably a Cooper. I've spoken to four dealers who are all steadfastly refusing to discount the car, sticking to the list price. Their attitude seems to be - we don't discount these cars, and I think you'll find no-one else will.
  • New Car shopping around the world 5 Apr 2002 (Forum)
In a thread on getting a Yaris and the long waiting times (which has long since scrolled in to the bit bucket that is anything not on the front page of this forum) Mark (B) made some cogent comments on how things work elsewhere in the world as far as putting up with long waiting times for a new car... this drew some flak to which I responded in some detail... not wanting my deathless prose to go unread by my huge fan club (pause for sound of one hand clapping.... thank you) I thought I would use it to start a new thread on the general aspects on how things work in different parts of the world and kick it off with a look at how it works over here (BTW Mini buyers might find this like to the USA MINI site of interest Esp. in regard to the TV Advertising that they are running (can be seen with Quick Time Or WMP) (also almost all Mini dealers in the US offer as a dealer option full roof size decals of eitheer the US flag or the Union Jack or a bunch of flowers (ala Peter Max) to go on a white top Mini and the Union Jack out sells the US flag about 2 to one and almost no flower decals have been sold (Info from a NewEngland Dealer other parths of the US may be diferent) strange huh?

I'm new on here, and need some advice. My Mini Cooper is about to enter the great car park in the sky, and I've been looking for a cheap second-hand car. Nine days ago I saw a Ford Maverick, took it for a test-drive, it seemed fine, except for a big crack across the windscreen.
