  • BMW questions 12 Apr 2005 (Forum)
However looking around the web I can't seem to find anything. Also I've looked in HJ's directories but there's nothing useful in there. So does anyone have any links? The thing I most want to know is that, as the car is 4 years old and has covered 107k miles, will it be in need of a timing chain change? The last service of the car was at 91k so the garage is going to do a (non-BMW) service on it but I just want to check what the status is with the chain - I've bought a car before (Passat) only for the timing belt to break within a month or so of ownership...
  • 2005 Audi A4 - Audi A4 issues, should I pursue costs against deal 29 May 2012 (Forum)
I have put slightly under 1000 miles on it. It has 75k miles. It was sold with service history and 6 months warranty, in fact the ad said just had major service. I spent £180 on the car replacing rear brake pads and aircon pressure sensor. Also needed fluids topped up, so didn't look much like a serviced car.
  • Ford B-MAX - 1.0 Ecoboost B-Max as a second car - thoughts? 16 Dec 2017 (Forum)
We’re all quite tall in the family (3 of us over 6 feet), so whilst we’re looking for a small car, it can’t be too small!   A Ford dealer that we’re thinking of buying another vehicle from has offered us a good deal price-wise (according to the HJ checker), on a 15 plate Ford B-Max Ecoboost 1.0.
  • vw - Hire car 23 Jun 2018 (Forum)
I called the garage we bought it from and after a bit of toing and froing they agreed to collect the car and repair it and provide us with a hire car while ours was being repaired. A hire car was dropped of at my girlfriends work, she signed a form to say she had accepted the car and there was no damage etc.
  • Peugeot 308 SW 1.2L Puretech - Peugeot 308 SW 1.2L Puretech Engine Problem -P1032 28 Aug 2023 (Forum)
In June 2019 I bought a second hand, 2016 plate, Peugeot 308 SW estate 1.2L Puretech from British Car Auctions at Frimley.  The car was previously owned by Motability from whom I have had some very good reliable cars from in the past and it had just 24000 miles on the clock. It is a lovely car, seemed well looked after, properly maintained, goes really well and I fell in love it very quickly.
  • Mondeo estate dec 2002 washer 16 Jan 2019 (Forum)
The pump motor appears to be running in that the sound it makes is consistent with a normal pump sound, the nozzles are not blocked, the pipe from the nozzles back to the resevoir is clear and connected (and pump) because I have blown low pressure air back into water resevoir to check. There are no puddles beneath car when it is operated. I have flushed the reservoir copiously with a hose. Any other suggestions please? (PS it is still within 3rd year (dealer?) warranty and currently abroad for an extended period so that option is not available at the moment.
  • Yaris Hybrid 8 Oct 2013 (Forum)
A big question will be whether the dogs will fit in the boot. They have rather been spoilt with Doblo boot, but rarely go in the car anyway. As a family we have occasionally used the space of the Doblo but not often and really want something smaller and cheaper to run. The Doblo has had suspension issues front and back, has just failed the MOT with a frayed seatbelt and I am not confident that it will be reliable now that the warranty is about to expire!
  • 01 Nissan Maxima - Running Rough 16 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I have a 2001 Nissan Maxima 2litre V6, Over the last 2 years it has had the coils replaced 3 times and the ECU changed and O2 sensor changed . car still runs rough only fires on 4 or 5 cylinders most of the time . Nissan UK say this problem is common to this model , they do not have a clue how to cure it . THe USA Nissan website are full of the same problems on this model only affects 1999 year up models not the earlier ones, It is long out of warranty and the repairs are expensive but futile Nissan have only charged me 50% labour due to the problems but do not seem any nearer to a solution.
  • Pug 406 HDI 02 - weird electricals 17 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Turning off the engine and restarting has cured it, as has switching the headlights on manually (normally on auto) and then off again. Has anyone else had this? Happened twice yesterday (given that I only used the car three time that is quite a high percentage) Worth mentioning to the dealer as still got another year warranty? (Local dealer seems quite good at fixing the various recalls/ leaks/ non working reversing lights/dodgy indicator stalk etc that have needed to be done.
  • MG ZR Diesel water loss. 4 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I have a MG ZR diesel turbo 101BHP,Registered in July 2002 with 22000 miles. The last couple of weeks it's been using water at the rate of about one litre every other day.I've taken it to my main dealer under the terms of the warranty however they tell me after 40mins of pressure testing that there is no leak on the system something I was able to tell them myself. They offered no other explanation or solution in the mean time I have a car which I need to fill with water more often than I do diesel!
  • Alfa Romeo 156 (1998 - 2005) - Broken down - dealer's liability - help!! 6 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I am writing to ask for advice regarding a used car I recently bought. The car was bought approximately 6 weeks ago. The price was £1999, and I part exchanged my car (at £1200), therefore paying £800 cash on top. The car broke down whilst travelling on the motorway and was taken to the nearest garage.
  • Paperwork for buying a used car 15 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Hi, I am in the process of buying a used Ford Mondeo from a franchised dealer. I am supposed to be going to the dealership tomorrow to fill in any paperwork and to pay (I am paying cash, no financing) and collect the car. The only issue is that they have told me that there will be a delay of several hours from me signing the paperwork (including the sales invoice/contract) until I can pay and take the car away.

  • seat Ibiza 2010 1.6 se 7spd dsg - Loud buzzing noise from dsg between 20-40mph 13 Sep 2014 (Forum)
I have since been to another independant garage who road tested it on a recently re-surfaced main road (there's a rarity),& the tech reckons it's a problem with 2nd gear? This car has covered 29k miles, serviced independantly,& has not been thrashed. It's been used daily, mainly on A roads & some local. It is going back to the main dealer next week to be tested.
  • Mazda RX-8 - Mazda RX-8 recall in the UK 10 Jul 2011 (Forum)
When I contacted Mazda and asked them if my car had any recalls they told me that they were not aware of any recalls for the RX-8 and I told them I read many statements on the internet about recalls and they just told me not to believe everything I read...........they keep on denying all knowledge......so I handed the phone to my mechanic who they told was a recall but if the car is not under warranty I would have to pay..................
  • Man maths and cars 27 Mar 2009 (Forum)
There are various strategies that we can use to justify or rationalise the otherwise irreconciliable. Bangernomics is one that appealed to me for many years - 10 months MOT and starts all on its own, I was your man. Butr what a load of embarassing rubbish.
  • Ford Puma (1997 - 2001) - Why are they all rusty? 18 May 2008 (Forum)
Am I expecting too much as I dont think I should buy something thats rusty so young but it is looking like we find something else at this rate? Such a shame that Ford didnt bother to think that the cars might be around after their anti-corrosion warranty ran out and built them properly in the first place because other than the corrosion they seem good reliable fun cars!
  • How to buy a car 4 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I have picked up some bits of advice along the way... 1) start off with the idea that you will buy their finance (and warranty) 2) walk away 3) aim to be buying at a "month end" 4) when you have got as far as you think you will get, ask for tax, tyres, fuel, mats etc just before you sign 5) blah de blah What tricks can one best use to drive the deal down?
  • SEAT/VW tdi pd VW505.01 oil follow up 21 Nov 2004 (Forum)
He checked the engine code which confirmed it was in fact a pd. He then confirmed that magnatec had been used on both the 10k and 20k service. (Great!!). As a result, these are the options I've been offered: 1.An oil cange to the correct oil and a free 4th year warranty. 2.A full refund of my money. 3.A brand new car, and I pay the difference. 4.Try to locate another used car of same price, age, mileage etc.
  • Plea to HJ 24 Apr 2007 (Forum)
So it's your call. My car is 3 yrs 10 months old, has done 55,000 miles, serviced as per the book, using only synthetic oil and using only shell fuel. Basically it has been well looked after. I month ago the car developed a starting problem, the main dealer has spent 25 hours fault finding and cannot find what is causing the problem.
