Petrol Shortage? 27 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I was on fumes, but had to queue cos half the pumps (unleaded) were out of action. When I got to the till the girl asked if I had filled up ok. Apparently they had almost run out of petrol! Could this mean I have filled up with the carp from the bottom of the tank? (It was a good deal by the way. Only 85p a litre after allowing for the voucher I got in store.) -
Turbo Whine - On a Focus?!? 16 Aug 2005 (Forum)
No - I wouldn't call it a whine as such - that indicates something bad. This really sounds like a turbo whine. You can hear it above 2,000 revs. The car runs perfectly, Mum thinks I'm crazy but I can definitely hear one. I'm not complaining - I'm just curious as to what it is. It sounds...strange. -- Adam -
Child allowed in front seat? 9 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I don't think it's allowed in France, and I'm not sure about the UK any more? I'm going on a long run up to Denmark next week and am thinking of driving overnight; my son will have more space up-front. Thanks! -
MOT, is spare tyre checked now. 28 Jul 2005 (Forum)
They were pleasingly very thorough however it occured to me afterwards that they only took a cursory glance in the boot, perhaps the spare tyre is not covered by the MOT now that run-flat tyres etc are a legal alternative? -
Coupe for around £4500, advice please. 9 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Favorite at the moment is a 1.4 Ford Puma. Do any Backroomers have a view on this choice or suggest an alternative with similar running costs? -
Why did you choose? 3 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Was it the seductive velour material? Was it the 0-60 time? The top speed? Comfort? Economy? Price? Running costs? Some other reason? Having chosen, are you pleased with it? Did the main reason you chose it pale into insignificence when you discovered that living with it was a pain in other areas? Would you buy the same make/model again, and recommend it? -
'Tunit' diesel tuning device 31 May 2005 (Forum)
I saw an ad in Autocar and followed up the web site link: http://www.tunit.co.uk They claim their devices boost diesel power significantly. But all the press testimonials appear to be their own advertisements in Diesel magazine. I run a Passat V6 TDi which I'd like to see with a bit more grunt, but an hesitant about parting with £400 without some independent advice. -
Vectra Diesel starting problem 26 May 2005 (Forum)
Recently, I've had a problem starting from cold in that: The car will turn over for a second or 2, run for a few seconds and then just stop. Then I have to turn the engine over 6-9 times (10 secs a go) to get it to start. Once started, it's OK. From warm, it starts OK. Starting it 4-8 hours later is OK. -
Frontera DTi lumpy idle 21 May 2005 (Forum)
W've got a 1999 Frontera DTi which after 5 minutes idling starts getting very very lumpy and rough running at the same time giving out a bit of black smoke from the exhaust. A blip on the throttle restores the normal idle. Theres a suspicion the injectors may need doing. Doe's anyone know whether the camshaft has to come out to gain access to the injectors or is their removal a straightforward job?? -
Escort hissed and died 10 May 2005 (Forum)
I have an N reg Ford Escort 1.8 si. It been running with reduced power for a little while - for which i could not find the cause. Suddenly it lost more power and started hissing from under the bonnet. I managed to limp home not being able to get beyond 2nd gear. -
A free Porsche? 24 Apr 2005 (Forum)
A friend of mine has just bought a £32k porsche. He reckons he'll be able to run it for a year and sell it for the same price at the end of the year. Now apart from servicing, cost of cash etc this means he'll be driving round in an expensive car for free. I'm not so sure - surely it can't be done. -
Vectra Sri 04 Erratic idle on start-up 16 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Had the car 5 weeks.Registered 03/04.12K miles.Twice in the last 10 days I have started the car (turning iginition with left foot on the clutch only-not touching accelerator). The car starts, but the idle fluctuates between 800 and 300 (approx) revs.Only when the accelerator is pressed does it clear, and return to its usual idle of 800 rpm.Car runs fine.No other probs.Any ideas? -
saab 9-5 fumes 14 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I looked at a saab 9-5 with view to buy the car when car was running you could smell a breather type smell in the car, like a crank case breather smell, apart from this the car drove and sounded perfect although it has 130,000 miles on, anyone any ideas if it is bad news or not? -
Pug 406 1.9TDi starting probs 6 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Hi Friend has just bought a 97 'R' Pug 406 with the 1.9 Turbo diesel engine. Car has 'only' covered 160,000 miles - runs well and starts fine from cold with no smoke, however the warmer it is the more difficult it is to start!! Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing it? Glow-plugs?? Injectors?? etc.. Any help really appreciated. -
April cheer & the M4 1 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Does anyone know why such a low limit is in place bearing in mind that last year's project involved a 50mph restriction? It was rather galling to run along at 40mph being overtaken by HGVs doing 50+. Do they have exemptions? -
Motorway miles. 20 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Always confused when I read an ad. that states high mileage but motorway miles. What does this mean? Are they incinuating less wear and tear? The engine still runs when you drive on a motorway, you still brake. what about in heavy traffic? The clutch gets a hammering here too? And how do you get onto a motorway? I'd say doesn't make any difference at all. I'll always ignore an ad that says *motorway miles* Opinions? -
Two stroke oil - any difference? 14 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Sorry, non-motoring, but petrol engine content. I've just aquired a two-stroke petrol strimmer, no manual or stuff but I've found it should run on 40:1 two stroke fully synthetic oil. Is there anything to stop me using fully synth normal car oil - I've got half a container of Halfords stuff left over from the last car oil change. cheers Martin -
French diesel fuel 25 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I am convinced that our Megane gives us about 4 to 5 mpg more when running on french diesel. In the UK I generally use BP or Texaco and average 50mpg. In France I fill up with whatever is convenient at the time at we seem to average 55mpg. Driving conditions are similar, length of journeys perhaps a bit longer. -
Clio 1.9tdi starting problem 23 Feb 2005 (Forum)
There was no problem whatsoever prior to the change, but it now turns over for 10 seconds or so before finally springing to life in a puff of grey smoke. Once started it runs fine and also starts fine once warm. Anyone know what the cause may be or if I need to prime the fuel system in any way? Thanks, Mark -
