Diesel Passats are showing a bit of a revival with £6,800 paid for a 71,000 mile 99V TDI 90 S and £7,450 stumped up to secure a 59,000 mile 99T TDI 90 S. But I had to suspend my diesel disbelief when a 9,000 mile 2000X Mercedes ML270CDI automatic trundled into the hall. Bidding kicked off at a rock solid £25,000 and went all the way to £27,400, so there still seems to be a market for them even though every driveway in St. Georges Hill now HAS to be occupied by a BMW X5.

Auction Prices Firmer; Few Bargains 4 Apr 2001 (News)
Prices were firmer at auction today as Spring demand rises and the supply of part-exchanges and de-fleetings from the March registration change start to dry up. 30,000 less miles, an automatic rather than manual box and desirable Glacier Green metallic rather than Arctic Silver saw a 50,000 mile 97P BMW 523iSE sell for £12,600, a cool £2,600 more than the 80,000 mile manual 98R which went for just £10,000.
Auction Prices Fall as Dealers Clear Decks for March 28 Feb 2001 (News)
I wasnt there to buy, but very nearly started waving my catalogue at the auctioneer when an exceptionally tidy, just serviced, 97,000 mile 91J Lexus LS400 stalled for another bid at £5,025. A 35,000 mile 98S Mercedes C240 V6 Classic 5-speed automatic also hit the wall on the low side at £13,550 and a 102,000 mile 98R C180 facelift Classic manual with a/c looked even better value at £6,800. Three Hondas failed to get anywhere near where the auctioneer needed them to be.

In the UK, the new Audi A3 will initially be offered with a choice of two engines: a 1.5-litre petrol with 150PS and a manual gearbox and a 2.0-litre diesel combined with an automatic gearbox, also producing 150PS. A mild-hybrid version of the 1.5 TFSI will follow shortly after launch using a 48-volt system to provide an extra 50Nm of torque and allow the A3 to coast with the engine off for up to 40 seconds.

One of only 193 built, the Jensen FF came with two important innovations: Ferguson Formula four-wheel drive and Dunlop Maxaret anti-lock brakes. Powered by a 6,276cc Chrysler hemi V8 engine with power fed through a Torqueflite automatic transmission it had a top speed of 140mph and could get to 100 in 19 seconds. The body, with distinctive glasshouse rear window, is by Touring of Milan. This RHD car comes in ‘Mango’ orange and features an appropriate leather and wood interior.

When the e-Legend Concept is in either of the autonomous modes, the interior configuration changes, with the steering wheel retracting under the sound bar in order to make the 49-inch central screen fully visible. The front seats recline for extra comfort and the side armrests deploy automatically, freeing up a large storage area and an induction charging area for smartphones and other devices. The Peugeot e-Legend Concept is powered by a 100% electric power train, with the 100kWh batteries reaching 800Nm torque and 340Kw power, distributed to the four-wheel drive.

Furthermore, the automatic gearbox was replaced by a ZF manual unit and Bosch electric components were installed instead of the Magneti Marellis. Other options Dr Wax requested were power-assisted steering, special double exhaust pipes (each 60 mm) and two enlarged petrol tanks (50 litres each, normally 35 litres) increasing the car’s touring range.

Its pseudo-sportiness may not deliver the most engaging drive as a result, but having owned an auto 405 before, the author can confirm they’re actually really quite pleasant.
