Drink driving ban 23 Nov 2005 (Forum)
A neighbour?s son has recently been banned for drink-driving. He received the statuary 12 month ban for a first offence, £800 costs and a fine of £800. At the time of the offence his mother was becoming seriously ill and in fact by the time the case came to court and he was banned she had died. -
Volvo S70 vs S80 9 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Hi Everyone, I've been considering a Volvo S70 as my next purchase, with a budget of up to £7k(ish), S-plate or younger. However, I notice that S80s are now becoming available at around this price - possibly more 'leggy' examples - though that doesn't really put me off. Can anyone advise which they feel is the 'better' car? -

What 4x4 for £7k? 30 Sep 2005 (Forum)
It needs to be able to tow my 1500kg boat trailer, and a set of low ratio gears would be handy for pulling the trailer up slipways, across beaches etc. I also need plenty of space in the boot for my sailing gear, so the 4x4's I've thought of are Discovery, LWB Terrano, or the LWB Trooper. I've got access to a normal saloon car as well, so my annual mileage in the 4x4 won't be more than 15k a year. To be honest I'm not too fussed about toys or image, more concerned with getting something with the best chance of reasonable reliability. -
Quietest - Primera, Mondeo or Passat? 30 Sep 2005 (Forum)
This car will be a work car (around 20k p.a.) so low cruising NVH, good handling and safety is key. The choices are all 2004; Primera 1.8 S 60k for £3,000; Mondeo 2.0 Ghia 70k for £4,500 and a Passat 2.0 SE 75k for £5,000. I am happy to go for the Primera because of the price but should I consider the Mondeo and Passat if I want a more calm environment? -
Golf TDi 1.9 Ignition Failure 10 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Hi - can anyone offer any informed insights into why an S reg Golf TDI 1.9 would have ignition problems? It has run fine for the last few days (we only bought it a week ago from a policeman!) though on Sunday it took a couple of attempts to get the engine going. -
X-1R oil treatment - anyone heard of it? 12 Aug 2005 (Forum)
It claims to reduce wear, increase performance, etc. It sounds good, but here's my thoughts: 1.It must have been developed in the 70's (when NASA started using shuttles), so why is it only now they're advertising it? 2.If its so good, why dont the big oil companies put it in their oil and tell everyone why their oil is now "better"? -
Volvo V70 2005 electric driver's seat 9 Aug 2005 (Forum)
On a previous Volvo when you opened the door with the key fob the seats automatically adjusted to the settings for that key and are supposed to do that for 2005 V70's. On my current Volvo the seat settings are registered, but 98% of the time the seat does not adjust automatically to the key fob which opened the door (my wife and I have different seat settings and individual key fobs) and to adjust the seat for the relevant driver you have to push the manual button in the seat to get the correct setting. -
Why? 1 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Day off today ( Queens birthday), decided to take the wife and children to Paignton Zoo. Anyway by the time we get there we have to park in the overspill carpark and it,s pretty empty.Evenso i decided to park a fair lick from the pedestrian exit, which i mistakingly thought would allow us to get the youngests buggy out and sorted with no problems. Bearing in mind that their was a gap of 5 empty car spaces in every direction why o why did the driver of a BMW 530D Tourer need to park next to use forcing the wife to relocate the buggy with a half strapped in child. -

Nissan Almera motorway performance 3 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Hi there, I've got my mind set on the Nissan Almera, as it seems to be a good first car buy (95-98 range) : - Cheap insurance (£860 from endsleigh with 0 ncd) - Cheap - Late 80's styling but practical , so theft chance low - Reliable from all reports read - Comfortable - On paper , 40MPG for petrol 1.4 My main curiosity is how the car runs on the motorway. Since these cars really are as rare as hens teeth where I am (Newcastle), I was wondering if anyone on here has much experience with them on the motorways. -
Terrible news for Chicago commuters 31 Mar 2005 (Forum)
"Workers in Chicago and surrounding areas have among the longest commute times in the country, according to the Census Bureau?s annual American Community Survey released Wednesday" It begins. MOT - Discussion 10 Mar 2005 (Forum)
...that some MOT test stations deliberately fail vehicles in order to boost the parts and labour section of their business or else serve as a opportunity to take "back-handers" ...therefore, should: Commercial companies conduct MOTs? Each town/district have a MOT test station(s) that is/are funded out of the MOT test fee and by the Road Fund License? A town/district MOT centre, run by civil servants or contracted out to a service provider with no commercial outlet or association with the automotive trade? -
1998 Peugeot 306 D Turbo Timing Belt 4 Mar 2005 (Forum)
This one has 65K miles on the clock, but have not seen the service history yet. Secondly, the Car-By-Car says this:- " Spate of conrod failures on 1997 -1998 R and S reg 1.9 XUTD diesels;" Does this apply to the D Turbo? I have no idea of the XUTD is the same as the D Turbo engine! Thanks in advance everybody, I promise to get him to buy something soon! Blue -

4X4 Braking Distances 5 Feb 2005 (Forum)
The Land Rover Discovery TDV6 HSE on dual purpose tyres did 70-0mph in 51.2m with a kerbweight of 2718kg. Rather puts paid to one of the anti-brigades main arguments that 4X4's have longer stopping distances! As a Range Rover driver I may be a little biased, but it has to be good for all motorists to have some factual evidence as we are all under attack by the anti-car groups. -- \"Nothing less than 8 cylinders will do\" -

306 1.4 XR 1996 Really Poor Handbrake I have just replace both H.Brake cables on the wife?s 306. However, even with FULL adjustment on the handbrake lever it still wont hold very well? After replacing the cables I replaced the drum and gave the pedal a good few pumps to set the adjusters.
