Idle thoughts on new road tax. 4 May 2008 (Forum)
With the new road tax coming in I have changed my mind as the old car will save me a good bit bit on road tax as time goes by and still runs ok. My neighbour has a similar car to mine but newer and I guess much more carbon efficient yet he will pay more tax than me. My daughter needs a largish car to get the pushchairs and general tackle needed for a young family in. -
HJ doubting diesel 29 Apr 2008 (Forum)
In HJ's Saturday Telegraph column today he comments to a reader that he is getting so many reports of failed DMFs/clutches, injection pumps, injectors, turbos, intercoolers and EGR valves on diesels that he wonders whether overall running costs may be cheaper for petrol engined cars. Now I don't agree with HJ on everything he writes but it was EGR valve problems (and mis-fueling concerns) that put me off a diesel C Max last year. -
Nissan Almera (1995 - 2000) - 1998 1.6 Uneven wear on one tyre only 17 Apr 2008 (Forum)
The car even handles okay, although not as sharp as it once did. No pulling under braking or acceleration and it drives straight on motorway runs. It seems the only evidence for a problem is the wear on that one tyre. {pedantic mode on. Changed the word wheel(s) for tyre(s) as it's not actually the wheels that are wearing. pedantic mode off} -
Renault Clio II (1998 - 2001) - 99 1.2 16v loss of power. 13 Apr 2008 (Forum)
My car is over revving, loosing power , using lots of fuel ( i have replaced the plugs) , very jerky, cuts out & hard to restart ( generally 20-30 mins)this can happen after a long or short run . ie rev at 3000 on its own but when i accelerate the revs drop , no power then cuts out. Renault have told me its the coolant sensor but ive got no probs with the heating or engine temp. Clio 1.2 16v 1999. -
BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 01 316 missfire and flat spot. 11 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Another garage has looked at it that has all the diagnostic equipment, and according to the computers the car is running sound. So the next thing is he is going to do is call a Auto electrician. Any ideas please. -

Import car to USA 31 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I used to have a Rover P6 V8 which has now found its way into the hands of a professional panel beater and restorer. He's made it look so great and it apparently still runs so well at 33 years old I was thinking of buying it back off him and importing it to the USA. The breadth and depth of knowledge in the backroom never ceases to amaze me... so I'll give it a shot.... does anybody here know about the legalities of this? -
Mercedes Benz C-Class estate S204 - Privacy glass? 30 Mar 2008 (Forum)
This is strange as the old model had this availability... Anyone got any ideas why? As an off shoot for anyone considering the new C-Class, having run a BMW 320d for the past 2.5 years (80,000 miles), and also owning a 330d Touring, the mercedes is far superior in its driving (very comfy ride without runflats), even if the BMW has it beaten on seat comfort and interior quality. -
Audi A8 (1994 - 2003) - 2001 2.8ltr Will Not Start (Sometimes) 3 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Dear All Anyone had an Audi that would not start when the engine is mildly warm ? My A8 always starts from cold and from hot, but sometimes will not re start if it's only been running for a few miles and it's really trying my patience. Had to abandon it today and let it go cold, thereafter started easily. (Engine code APR) Is there an ECU upgrade or fix or maybe something like a dodgy sensor that I should replace. -
Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1999 1.3 - car heater fan not working at all 21 Feb 2008 (Forum)
It would then start up working again but still making the same noises and eventually stopped working altogether. I still get heat into the car once its been running for about 15mins but as you can imagine in the cold weather its causing a real problem keeping the screen clear. Can this be repaired easily by an amateur? Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Nick {year+engine added to subject header, as per the 3 requests that you overlooked} -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 2001 1.6 - New timing belt, now squeak? 8 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Daughters 2001, 1.6, 84K Focus, just had timing belt done (better late than never) now there is a squeak/screach from the area around of the belt, not very loud but wasnt there before the belt change, noise goes (or at least cant hear it from inside motor) after car run for a few miles, but its there again if start engine up after 10 mins or so. Doesnt seem to get any worse if electrics on or not, clutch is in or not or steering or not. Is this normal?, anything to worry about? -
Audi A3 Sportback (2004 - ) - 2005 2.0 diesel - power 'flat spot' 19 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Returned to car last night after a week away (damp Stansted long stay) and it happened again, for first time in a forward gear - in first on take off. Feels like engine has died, but still running and power soon comes back. Car goes wonderfully otherwise. It's still under Audi warranty, but before I take the official route, any BR thoughts, pse? many thanks EH PS not sure if this should be under Tech Matters or here {Kicked across - DD} -
What to replace 2006 Mondeo TDCI estate with? 3 Jan 2008 (Forum)
After a lengthy tussle with Ford and the intervention of my solicitor, I collected my 2006 Mondeo estate from the dealer just before Christmas. Its had about £2000 worth of repairs and now seems to run alright (for the moment). I have lost confidence in the car though, it has been the most unreliable and troublesome car that I have ever owned. We have decided to p/x for a different car, one with a petrol engine. -
Rear brake lights 28 Dec 2007 (Forum)
In the last few years I have noticed an escalation in cars driving without brake lights. Having almost running into the back of a few. Is this due to owners not checking their lights regularly. MOTs not being carried out properly. Or more sinisterly, muppets enticing a rear end shunt for a payout. I managed to alert a driver at a set of lights recently that he had no brake lights. -
FIAT Palio Weekend (1996 - 2003) - 2003 1.9 Diesel - Starting Problem 20 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Initially it starts but immediately the engine goes off within 2~4 seconds 2. Thereafter I have to run the starter for about 3~4 times for 30 secs each (with a gap of course) before it starts. No acceleration is required. Then only the engine starts functioning fine. Its not a heater problem The diesel filter has been cleaned and checked. -
overpainting Smoothrite aerosol paint 11 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Spraying a single coat goes on very well, nice and shiny, no faults. Its says to spray another coat after 15mins. Ive found this makes it either run or or goe orange-peely Any idea if it can be left longer ? The old brushable stuff would craze and peel if overpainted after more tha nthe specified time unless left about 6weeks to fully cure Ive already had to strip off one lot of paint as it ran and don't want to tempt fate by leaving any longer between coats if its going to craze or do somehting else. -
Volkswagen Polo II (1991 - 1994) - 1992 1050cc - burnt ht lead 4 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I have just sorted the non starting Polo that my daughter runs around in for the second time in 3years the HT lead to the centre of the Distributor cap has burnt away at the dissy cap end (leaving only the outer insulation boot of the HT cable holding it in place). As its happened again I wonder if anyone else has had this or similar.I check that the HT leads are pushed home and tight often , I did this only a few weeks ago for the MOT check and did not notice any burning ect. -
BMW 7-Series E38 (1994 - 2001) - 728i Cold engine -- light knocking 3 Dec 2007 (Forum)
No nasty smoke and smooth idle expect for a light knock which got faster with engine speed. Dealer said it was because the oil needed to get round and hadn't been run for a while. I can accept that, however, would have thought the knocking should have stopped after 5 mins or so? The straight 6 BMWs I have seen in the past have not made this sound - am I right to walk and could it mean a top end rebuild? -
Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 2005 1.6 Duratec 100BHP - Spark Plug Gap? 6 Nov 2007 (Forum)
The Ford ones appear very similar to NGK's, their recommended replacement being TR5A -10 gapped at 1.0 mm (for all 1.6 models) The new ones are running well and have cured the hesitant idling problem recently experianced. I'm confused! many thanks for your help.
