  • Nissan Maxima QX (2000 - 2004) - 01 3.0 won't idle ! 15 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Help please! My previously faultless QX recently broke down: it will not idle, the engine runs when the accelerator is used ( the car is auto ), My local garage has identified the fault as the idle control valve or stepper motor which they've tried to clean out to no avail. They tell me I need a new one, this cat although UK supplied is very rare , and garage tells me a new stepper motor will be £500 plus VAT.
  • Citroen Xsara (1997 - 2004) - 1998 1.6 SX Heater blower 1 Mar 2009 (Forum)
I assume that the black is connected to earth (ie -ve on the car battery) and red is live, but when I checked voltage across the red & black wires it showed zero volts with engine running and also engine off. There was approx 8.8V across the white & black and zero across orange & black. The rear window heater works OK. I'd be grateful for any advice. Thanks.
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 06 2.0 TDCI Cambelt 25 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Hi all. I have recently purchased an 06 Focus with 80k on the clock. Everything runs sweet on it and I know Ford say 100k for a belt change but as I have always erred on the side of caution I'm wanting to get the cambelt changed in the next 10k miles (before a trip to france in summer) Have always done my own belts on past cars (lastest was a 406 HDI) but I think this one, without the aid of a haynes book may be a little bit tricky, so think I'll send it to the local indy.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 94 2.0d Won't start 24 Feb 2009 (Forum)
The battery has a full charge. I was wondering if it could be the fuel cut of solinoid jammed shut but surely it would then not run if it was bump started ? Or if it is an immobilser problem? Please help as i am at the end of my temper......
  • Mazda CX-7 (2007 - ) - Mazda CX7 10 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Once a month he does a 200 mile trip to visit family. What should I tell him? Personally I would love one myself but couldn?t justify the running costs. Are these likely to surprise him?
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 05 tdi 1.9 Won't start after new head gasket 28 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I have discussed the problem with the man on the vag-com helpline and we are faily sure that the problem is not electrical. That said I have not yet run a full fault check or looked at the engine immobilizer module. Does anyone have experience of this kind of problem? any help would be greatly appreciated.
  • Renault Scenic (1996 - 1998) - 1998 1.6 Kangarooing 20 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Hi I wondered if anyone would have any advice. My Scenic starts fine, idles fine and runs fine at above say 15mph. However when I pull away the car has started kangarooing. I can only smooth it out by giving it more revs and slipping the clutch. It feels like its firing on all cylinders and feels normal when idling and cruising.
  • Renault Modus (2004 - ) - 05 1.5 Removal of instrument cluster? 14 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Does anyone know how to remove the instrument cluster in the above vehicle? I was driving past an MOD establishment when I lost all instruments, car continued to run, but had no instrument panel and radio died, after about 30 seconds, it all came back to life, but the mileage had shot up to 150,000 miles and the fuel and temperature guages no longer work. Did speak to the MOD and asked if they were testing EMP weapon or something, they said "what EMP weapon" and got quite shirty, so im looking at buying a replacement panel and popping it in, but there doesnt appear to be any obvious means of removal.
  • Renault Espace (1985 - 1997) - 94 2.0 Petrol - Spark Plug Ejection 13 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I thought there was a problem with the manifold/exhaust due to the noise but garage found spark plug had come out. Engine is longitudinally mounted so plugs run front to back making good access to rear two plugs nigh on impossible. Waiting for mechanics verdict, but looks like he won't be able to rethread the hole in situ. I assume the only alternative will be to remove the head and have the hole rethreaded, and that this would mean new head gasket, head skimming, possibly new timing belt etc at same time?
  • Nissan Primera III (1999 - 2002) - 01 1.6-idle problem following alternator 12 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Any idea why the idle has gone wrong? The car starts up normally turning over quickly. I have just given it a 15 mile run but revs still drop when pulling to a halt. Would leaving the battery disconected affected the ECU?
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 1999 1.8 Petrol- engine noise diagnosing 6 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Since the car had a service last November I have noticed that when the engine is such that it is running at about 1500rpm e.g. at 30mph in fourth gear or 20-25 mph in third gear there is a noise that I can't remember being there before the service - perhaps a coincidence ? Anyway, I describe the noise as being like a dull sound (low frequency) similar to the noise I had when a previous non genuine Ford exhaust was fitted (which I had replaced with a genuine one and the low frequency deep sound was gone).

  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.8TDCi - Self-filling Sump 9 Dec 2008 (Forum)
It has been owned from new, done 26,000 miles and has the engine oil changed every six months. Regretably it does a large number of short journeys. The car runs brilliantly. The oil was last changed at the end of June. The oil is dipped weekly and until a fortnight ago was at the corrrect level every time. A fortnight ago it was 'high', above the bulb and showing on the wire.
  • Peugeot 307 (2001 - 2007) - 02 2.0 limited power when cold 30 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Cant rev over 3000 at all by this it limits the speed.. This goes away once the engine seems to warm up and then she runs like a dream. The are no faults coming up on the engine management system. It has been in at the dealer and they have told me that they cant identify the fault and nothing is coming up on the readout. they have downloaded new software for the ecu, changed the airflow meter and EGU valve but none of this has solved the problem. please can anyone help me to identify the problem so I can get it fixed.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 2000 2.0 Hdi Misfire 23 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Just wondered if anyone can help in terms of how do I go about checking the timing is correct and the best way of solving it? Also (being greedy now!!) when the car was running it ran great loads of power good economy BUT there seemed to be what sounded like a cam rattle that would only be there between 1200 - 3000rpm and only while driving and not when stationary??? any ideas Thanks for your time

Is this sort of discourtesy illegal, is it ever likely to get punished (not from a speed camera, thats for sure!) However it great for bikers who can run straight past the chain of cars and know ahead they will have a nice clear road .
  • `Clocking` your `virtual friends` from the Forum 26 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Writing as a `virtual friend` (am I?, I thought I was..) I`m surprised that given I`m running one of the most exclusive motors in the UK, that no one has given me a wave, a flash of the light, honk or even virtual Mars Bar. Yep, in 3 years only seen 5 others like my noble and exclusive chariot.
  • Ford - Escort Van 1998 1.8D - Starting Problems 16 Oct 2008 (Forum)
This all occured after i was caught in a flood and had hoped changing these parts would fix the problem but to no avail. It was only up to the bottom of the doors. Enough to fill up my footwells. I've had it running from a bump start and it ran fine, it was just that when you switched it off it wouldn't start again. A friend told me it could be an earthing problem or a short somewhere but i don't even know where to start.
