  • Volkswagen Touran MPV (2003 - ) - Warning of impending car breakdown 8 Feb 2010 (Forum)
My VW Touran is 5 years old. Every couple of months it requires an engine coolant top up. When the coolant level falls just below MIN, the Multi-Function Display shows a dramatic "STOP - replace engine coolant" warning sign, which makes it difficult to forget to put in the requisite fluid.
  • Unsteamly progress 28 Feb 2009 (Ask HJ)
I am due to decide on buying a 2001 Rover 45 IXS 16V, which looks good inside. It has a low mileage of 38,000. This is going to my only family car, and...
  • Puegeot 405 1.9 TD - Puegeot 405 coolant pipe behind injector pump snap 30 Jan 2013 (Forum)
I did not have any materials to create a stent or sleeve a repair to the pipe, so I blocked both ends of the pipe. So now I presume that coolant is not circulating the head correctly (if at all). The car runs fine and the general coolant temperature has not been adversely affected. My super reliable car has done 210K and now I only drive short distances (8 miles or so to work) so I do not expect the head to suffer adversely (as it will never get too hot) while I determine if I can source a replacement pipe or effect a repair or leave it?
  • Audi TT Coupe - Why is my coolant tank still boiling and losing? 7 Jul 2011 (Forum)
The coolant tank was also boiling furiously when the engine was turned off and the heater was tepid. The service history indicated that a Waterpump had been changed around 3000 miles previously as was the timing belt.
  • 2003 NISSAN MICRA III K12 - Testing radiator fan 27 Oct 2019 (Forum)
I have been following details in the Haynes manual to test my radiator fan. As detailed in the manual, I unplugged the connector from the coolant temperature sensor and plugged a 150 ohm resistor into the connector to simulate a high coolant temperature so the radiator fan would start. The car engine however would not start! When I plugged the connector back in as normal, the engine started fine.
  • Toyota Celica - Temp gauge flashing high and no heat 5 Dec 2016 (Forum)
Figured it could be an air lock, however when driving home this evening the temp gauge kept going to hottest then back down every few minutes. When I got home I lifted the bonnet and there is coolant splashed all around near the coolant reservoir. My initial feeling is that this isn't good. Any ideas where to start? Thanks
  • Fabia power steering light flashes 12 Jul 2012 (Ask HJ)
I have recently bought a Skoda Fabia 1.4 2000 model. The power steering warning light keeps coming on and we cannot locate the reservoir.
  • Audi A3 1.9tdi - Temp gauge 22 May 2011 (Forum)
When I start it up - even from cold - within a minute the warning symbol and beep from the dash come on saying I should check the coolant levels and the temp gauge shoots across to 120 degrees. The coolant is not low, the water in the system is still cold and the car still drives normally so I take it this is just a sensor problem which I presume is the one in the top of the expansion bottle, or is it?
  • Volvo S40 TD - Temp guage 16 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I just want to know is it something to worry about? I got the car serviced couple of weeks ago and changed the coolant too. Coolant level seems to be fine. My mechanic mate also checked that radiator fan kicked in when he serviced the car.
  • VW Golf Mk3 Smoking Engine 31 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I have taken it to a VW garage ,and they couldnt find anything wrong with it ,but after driving it away,it did it again. The smoke is grey/white,and seems to be coming right from the engine itself. The temperature guage reads normal, but the coolant temp/level warning light comes on even though the coolant tank is full.I have checked for water in the oil,and it looks ok,also no mayonnaise anywhere.Any ideas would be greatly appreciated ,thanks - I'm totally stuck!
  • Which Rover 75? 29 Mar 2005 (Forum)
The 1.8 would suit me and there's lots of them about, but obviously I'm wary about the head gasket problem. In HJ's CBCB he says that the coolant level dropping is the first sign of a problem, but does this mean that the gasket has already gone, or does it mean it will go if the coolant level isn't topped up? Also, I have read that if the car has a special green coloured gasket fitted then it'll be okay.
  • Peugeot 405TD 1995 overheating 11 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Slowing down brought the temperature down slowly. When I stopped the coolant level was fine. The level light continues to come on and go off intermittently. Does anyone have any clues?
  • 98 xantia td cooling probs 5 Jun 2004 (Forum)
On the way back from work today I noticed the coolant temp was unusually high- coming up to 90 C. I initially feared the head gasket had sprung a leak but the coolant system isn't overly pressurised and the oil looks clean and mayo free. I then realised that the twin rad fans weren't coming on as they should- I 've just checked the 2 fuses near the battery which are ok so I assume that its a sensor or relay problem.
  • vw polo water leak 30 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Hi all, have tracked down the water coolant leak that has been evident only by the small drop in the expansion tank on the k reg 1 litre polo. The leak is around one of the temp sensors fitted to the thermostat housing (the leak is such that when engine is hot any trace of coolant evaporates).
  • 1997 Rover 214 29 Mar 2003 (Forum)
A friend of mine has a 214 with an interesting problem. When the coolant level was checked, there was a thick layer of oily sludge at the bottom of the expansion bottle. The engine doesn\'t appear to be mixing oil and coolant within the combustion chambers ie through a blown head gasket, and it doesnt overheat.
  • Citroen berlingo 1.9d - Temperature sensor 15 Jul 2020 (Forum)
Where's the coolant temperature sensor located please ??‍??
  • Volvo 440/460 - cold starting all ok again... 28 Nov 2012 (Forum)
So this morning armed with a couple of deep metric sockets (21 & 19mm) I removed old sensor, put finger over aperture to prevent coolant loss then screwed in new sensor. 45 mins from start to finish, inc leaving it idling with expansion cap off for coolant top up/air to escape, bumbling around tidying up etc etc. Thought I ought to do it sooner rather than later due to weather predicted to be a lot colder this week.
  • Toyota Avensis D4D 2.2 T Spirit - Head Gasket gone after losing coolant 28 Mar 2012 (Forum)
Hi, I have a 2006 T Spirit with 90,000 on the clock and I have just found out from my garage that the head gasket has gone. It started when the heating system kept throwing out cool air. I checked the coolant which was down and topped it back up. I took the car in  for inspection thinking it might be  a simple leak somewhere and was told it was the head gasket. Its now failed the first pressure test and is starting to look expensive...even the possibility of a new engine.
  • Peugeot 406 2.0 hdi 110. 52reg (208k) - 406 hdi loosing coolant 12 May 2010 (Forum)
About 3 weeks ago whilst taking the kids to school i noticed a ploom of white exhaust fumes coming from my 406 hdi, i got home and sure enough mayo in oil filler cap, head gasket!    The next day i cleaned the oil filler cap out, topped the coolant up with water and  it started fine, no white exhaust smoke. I drove it to the garage  who said it didn't seem like the head gasket had gone. They told me to change they thermostat, which i did.
