  • Volkswagen Polo - MK2F Polo Parade Coupe 1994 M reg starting problems 30 Apr 2021 (Forum)
Vehicle cut out - not suddenly but wouldn't start again. Removed throttle body and cleaned it out. Replaced fuel filter, distributor cap and top vacuum pipe. Seemed to work again for another couple of weeks but felt less powerful than usual, needed extra throttle when starting. Crappy idle when cold.
  • Peugeot 807 2.2 HDI 2004 - Peugeot 807 Stalling 14 Apr 2021 (Forum)
If I park the car at work and dont use it for the 8 hours I'm there, it will often stall upon starting again later that day.  My fuel economy isn't great either - especially on urban driving, much better on long journeys. I had no faults come up at my local garage, but this weekend I really struggled to get it to go, so my breakdown provider came out, they said it had a fault on it but couldn't read it for some reason.
  • Vauxhall Astra Mk 5 2.0 Petrol - Misfire after 30 seconds. 12 May 2020 (Forum)
    B) The car has not been filled up with fresh petrol at all and is sat with a quarter of a tank of fuel. I buy the super unleaded from the local Texaco garage. Could this have gone bad? It did start and idle fine last week for a good half hour. Any help would be appreciated, it may be old but it has never let me down until now.
  • What is the point of a Hybrid 25 Feb 2020 (Forum)
Based on those figures you would have to be mad to spend the best part of £30,000 to save a thimble of fuel. Add to that all 3 cars above have bigger boots and the Focus and Hyundai have a spare as standard. Seems to me the Corolla is destined to be as unpopular as the unloved Auris despite all the press hype.
  • Mk1 Ford Focus - Ford Focus starting issues 4 Dec 2019 (Forum)
I suspect it was left inside the garage for the few days it was in, sheltered from the cold. They suggested adding some fuel cleaner and running it for a week or so and repeating. The next day it struggled to start as per, so i booked it in to have the glow plugs changed. All went well after the repair and the car fired up with no issues.

Many Volvo owners with the D4 engine had run their cars on nothing but superdiesel and still had problems requiring EGR valve and cooler replacements - so fuel choice was not the root cause of this problem and cannot be blamed for it. The fault was reported widely across Europe, not just the UK. My own V60 D4 had one EGR valve replacement and 2 new EGR coolers in 3 years.
  • VW Golf 1.6 FSI SE - Electric car lease vs Used Car 22 Jun 2019 (Forum)
I've always bought second hand cars (petrol & diesel) but now I'm wondering if I should do a lease of some sort for an electric car to save on fuels costs  However, I've done the sums and I don't think I can find a deal that makes it more cost effective for me. I'd appreciate other peoples more knowledgeable expertise before I totally discount this as an option as I'm happy to stay with the cars I've got unless anybody can recommend this or another way for me to save on costs.
  • Vauxhall Vivaro - Smoking/misfire/rough under load 5 Jun 2019 (Forum)
So not sure if in the absence of any other codes that it could be something to do with this side of things? Other things I've done : New fuel filter - old one looked clean and no metal particles that I could see. New air filter Spun egr 180 Injector leak off test Unplugged maf - engine only revs to around 2k Checked pipe from map to inlet manifold is not blocked Checked for leaks on map pipe & both pipes going to boost sensor.
  • Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 2001 2.0 HDI anti polution fault 5 Jun 2019 (Forum)
which suddenly appeared after a service - sudden engine cut-out as if the tap had just turned off, no warning, no engine management light or display explanation, and which the garages SOLUS Diagnostice could only offer a vague guess at the "whole fuel system" (via. code P1112 or P112, I think) - oh, switching off and re-starting the engine cured the problem untill the next time - I went around all of the yellow/grey/red plug/skt. pairs under the bonnet, cleaned/'lubed and reseated them - and this seems to have sorted it out.
  • VW Polo 1.2 - 2016 VW Polo 1.2 TSI fails first MOT on CO2 emissi 3 May 2019 (Forum)
They told me that car of this age and mileage should not have these readings - something is wrong with it they think. My suspicions that fuel economy not what it should be for this engine are roused! Service also due at same time so it then goes to local VW dealer for diagnostics to see what's wrong. They come back and report 0.19% CO2 and say nothing wrong.
  • Toyota Yaris - Infuriating electrical fault on Toyota yaris 23 Mar 2019 (Forum)
I have had an infuriating electrical problem with my Toyota Yaris since November 2018. Whilst driving the engine management light together with airbag light, water in fuel and charging light illuminated. The heater motor ceased to work together with the direction indicators. The heated rear window light illuminated whichever position the switch was in. I took it into Toyota dealership who had the car for three days and told me it was fixed.
  • Honda CR-V - How negotiable are costs nowadays - or wait? 11 Feb 2019 (Forum)
But after some discussion we got the dealer down to 15k for the car, (including part exchange) plus tax plus a tank of fuel. We've got tonight to think it over. 15k is still 1k more than the top of our original budget. The salesman said these models are popular and sell well and it might be some time before another near our price range became available.
  • Golf Mk5 1.4 GT TSI 170 2006 - Timing chain querie 1 Nov 2018 (Forum)
Everything suggests that the camshaft chain has stretched but it was only changed 9k miles ago. It doesn’t seem that noisy either. Although it seems to be using a lot of fuel which suggest timing issues. Can anyone suggest anything else before I start to strip it down to check chain.

  • Fiesta tdci - Will Carbon Clean treatment fix an injector issue? 16 Oct 2017 (Forum)
I thought about getting some bg244 for £20 but if we break down again cannot get towed for the same fault plus it might push more junk from the fuel tank through the injector.
  • Ford Focus - Car Advice 25 Sep 2017 (Forum)
Chose a 2006 fiesta for my 1st motor and havent regretted my choice at all. The fiesta ticked all the boxes affordable to insure for 1st time driver, no bad on fuel and cheap enough parts and fun as hell to throw around corners. Sadly with a family of 4 its time to upgrade to something more spacious and this is where i need the help of those more knowlegeble than me.
  • Ford mondeo 2.0 tdci - Sudden starting issue mondeo MK 4 2.0 tdci 9 Aug 2017 (Forum)
It is generally OK if it's relatively warm, been running in the last hour, if left for a couple of hours it isn't great, but overnight it's terrible. When running it runs great, nothing perceptible in performance, fuel consumption, etc. I assume something must have been on its way out when it first failed to start first time. I didn't think anyone would seriously try and find a fault in a car that starts on second turn of ignition.
  • Audi A4 Avant - 2003 A4 Avant error codes P0102, P1290, P1137 ... 1 Jun 2017 (Forum)
I have had the error codes read, and they have returned ed with the following: P0102 - Mass airflow sensor (G70): signal too low: P0102 sporadic - no fault type identified P1290 - Coolant Temp Sensor at radiator outlet (G83): signal too small - P1290 P1137 - Fuel trim: bank 1 (add): system too rich: P1137 - static - no fault type identified And P1857 - 18265 - Load signal: error message from ECU: P1857 - intermittent Also this one without error code: 01542 - Yaw rate sensor (G202)  - sporadic - implausible signal   I am assuming/hoping there's a problem which is causing a bit of a knock on effect with these codes, and hopefully one problem to fix.
  • Skoda Fabia vRS - My neighbour has taken an unwitting risk 16 Feb 2017 (Forum)
Everytime I see it arrive and leave, I'll be watching for blue smoke and listening for tinkly engine noise. Im going to suggest monthly oil checks to him, and 98RON fuel, anything to stave off the threat without making him as nervous as me! Never felt nervous about a car I dont actually own....
  • Toyota Yaris - Stick or twist 23 Nov 2016 (Forum)
Be it bearings, suspension, exhaust or tires. In the last few months I've had brake pads replaced, and some investigations into fuel smells. Now the other day I unavoidably drove over a rock and hit the subframe and exhaust. So needs a new cat, plus have a leaky shock so both need replacing. Another 500 quid bill. Oh and they say petrol tank is seeping which could explain smell.
