1985 Capri 2.8i 25 Feb 2001 (Forum)
The bodywork is almost free of rust, save for a couple of very small patches at the front, which have been covered in petroleum jelly since I first noticed them. The engine needs adapting to unleaded fuel, but the last time I checked I was advised by a Ford main agent that it would cost no more than 30 quid to do it. Anyway, what would be a reasonable offer to expect from someone enthusiastic about putting it back in motion and attracted by the fact that, unlike most of its peers, it has had one careful driver since new? -
Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi - Intermittant judder problems 40-60mph range 6 Aug 2022 (Forum)
The last 1,300+ miles have been run using BP or BP Ultimate Diesel rather than supermarket fuels in my own attempt to flush out any potential problems. Car still exhibits same symptoms. -
Renault Laguna II - Renault - You couldn't make it up! 13 Sep 2020 (Forum)
The engine is a direct petrol injection unit, known commonly as the IDE (for Injection Direct Essence) and coded as the F5R. The fault it suffers is that the fuel pressure regulator, which on this engine has to handle very high pressures more commonly found in diesel engines, sticks and causes the fuel pressure to rise dangerously high. When this happens, the engine management system senses the excess pressure and shuts the engine down to prevent damage or injury. -
Renault Clio 1.5 dCi 68 road test . . . 28 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Nor did I have reason to be glad of the Euroncap 5 star crash protection. Second, when I started the ignition, the fuel gauge told me that it was about 7 eighths full. Over the next few days, I watched the needle slowly fall to about ¾ full. Then (on the morning of Friday 13th) it was reading full. As if that wasn't puzzling enough, the trip computer wasn't giving me any odometer reading at all, simply a message which said 'Pas de messages memorise' (or something like that.) -
16 important OIL questions answered! 8 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Due to crankcase induction and compression, the classical 2-stroke obviously cannot have an oil-filled sump, so the only way to keep an oil film on anything was to add oil to the fuel, or inject oil into the crankcase space where it could mix with the fuel vapour. There are now some engines where the fuel and oil are injected separately, but the oil is still burnt. 10) How important is it to change oil regularly? -
Honda Civic 1.0 SR - First impressions 9 May 2019 (Forum)
The boot floor cover itself is not as smart as the old one which you could flip origami style to make the the spare wheel well part of the boot if you had no spare. The new one is just a simple flap. The fuel gauge is oddly calibrated. I got a fuel warning light soon after setting out and the electronic display showed the needle at close to empty. So I stuck in £6 worth and the gauge now shows 1/3 full. -
Kia Ceed 3 - Dual Clutch Transmission review 22 Nov 2017 (Forum)
The temp gauge is now digital which you need to manually show by pressing few scroll buttons. The instant fuel economy is now a digital bar (instead of actual number) and only displayed in MPG (in old model you change change units to km, L etc.) On plus side, I can see the bonnet by leaning a little bit which is advantage when parking (didn't try any tight parking yet). -
Buying a car, would like a few things cleared up 24 Feb 2017 (Forum)
The diesel ones where nearly twice the price of the Petrol ones for the same milage & age. Can the engine taking a different fuel really alter a price that much or are there far more differences to the engines in these cars than just the fuel they take? Thanks again... I know at the end of the day any car can go wrong, but if i can get some information that gives me an idea of what to look for i'll be a little more prepared when i get myself another jam jar -
Hyundai i30 Tourer - Driving in Sardinia 31 May 2015 (Forum)
The varied Sardinian roads offer great opportunities to set free the boyracer, in many ways it reminded me of Scotland, varied roads with little traffic. Diesel was about €1.50 a litre with petrol slightly higher. Lots of fuel stations are unmanned so you feed cash into what looks like a cash machine, select which pump you are parked at, select the fuel you want, then go and fill up. This involved me moving the car as the pump number wasn't obvious! -
Any - Does Start/Stop Technology Really Save any Money? 23 Jun 2014 (Forum)
I have been attempting to make my own comparative measurements on a Sept 2001 (61) registered 22,500 miles (and rising) 1.25 litre supermini over intervals in excess of 1200 miles and it is proving difficult to see any significant benefit or improvement in fuel economy by manually 'emulating' the behaviour of a well engineered s/s system such as might be found on cars with sophisticated alternator and battery management systems designed to optimise fuel economy and overall performance i.e. as per BMW 'efficient dynamics' specifications. -
I bought a lemon! Trader doesn't want to know! 29 Mar 2014 (Forum)
I took it straight to a garage the next day, they changed the plugs and fuel filter and investigated it over the course of a few days. They gave me the bad news that the entire fuel system needs replacing and it would cost in the region of £2000. A bit fed up at this point with the £300 garage bill and still a broken car. -
Extended Test Drive of a BMW 520d 9 Apr 2012 (Forum)
Well they are the same price to me from my lease company so that is why they are being compared. The BMW is a slightly better driver and is more economical (however as I have a fuel card that is of no concern to me). The Audi has better equipment (Sat Nav, Sports seats with lumber, better quality leather, better stereo, Xenon’s) but lacks heated seats and electric seat adjustment. -
Citroen C4 Picasso 7-st (2007 - ) - - 10 day hire car review 12 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Didn't want baby seat in back so was only my 5 year old in the 'boot' but was easier for her to climb in through the boot. On drive home electronic fuel guage was infuriating. Was a take away full and return empty deal, and was hard to guage how much fuel was left. Put 2 lots of EUR 5 diesel in, but didnt register on kms left or guage flashing away- but made it back with 45 kms to empty showing. -
main dealer-do they really want to sell me a car? 23 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I know for a fact they do, so he trys again and eventually succeeds. Off we go in the diesel. No fuel, so off to the fuel station. There he meets an attractive young lady and talks to her for 10 mins. Gets back in the car, no apology, and says that she works for Audi, which is where he also used to work, and they get better company cars. -
Mazda CX-5 2018 diesel - White smoke problems 17 Jan 2024 (Forum)
It always stops when the engine starts to get warm and then it's totally fine. The smell is like a bad diesel smell, so I believe it is unburnt diesel fuel. This is the same pattern every time it happens. Only ever happens when the engine is cold and seems to be exacerbated when it's very cold outside. It does still happen in the summer months though. -
USA motoring observation 29 Nov 2023 (Forum)
In future I'll use Amtrak again. USA is not as cheap as people want us to believe. Barring fuel prices, NYC is horrendously expensive on everything, compared with London. Middle America is not that expensive though. -
Honda Civic - Honda Civic 1.5 Sport. Uncomfortable. Ideas? 19 Feb 2023 (Forum)
Before purchasing the civic, the Mazda CX5 was high on my list, but felt if I could get more power and better fuel economy from the civic without adding the weight of an SUV that would be best. I will be sad to see it go, as it's a great car but any longer than 30 minutes in it and I'm dying to have a rest. -
Hyundai i30 - Hyundai 5 Sep 2022 (Forum)
Its got a potential time bomb being a Gdi engine so I've read it cokes up easily and is an expensive fix terraclean are the only other place offering a clean without tearing the engine apart taking all the stuff off it to get at the engine to get the head off having that cleaned and put back together then in another 30.000 could need doing again. At 50.000 it burns a fair amount of oil so that's one of the warning signs hasn't dropped its fuel economy much yet and performance is good apart from chronic turbo lag and stop/start doesn't work 50 per cent of the time it's developed an annoying rattle/ buzz sounds a bit like pre-ignition. No garages are prepared to put a camera down the cylinder to have look but if it is pinking then thats could be another coking issue. -
Kia Picanto - Picanto Mk1 1.1L G4HG Crankshaft sprocket wear 21 Aug 2022 (Forum)
This is a design issue with the crankshaft and sprocket which was later improved by using a conventional spline shaft and keyway. You probably also have poor acceleration, fuel economy, hot exhaust, overheating, and possible ignition missfire problems that have got progressively worst as the sprocket has worn over time resulting in rotational movement on the crankshaft and resulting bad valve and ignition timing. -
