  • Tuning 21 Aug 2002 (Forum)
My Diesel Corolla (1995 with 73k) has gone seriously sluggish, everything including an old fiesta van is pulling away from me and i'm having to rev the nuts off the thing. It's never been nippy, but better than this It was serviced 6 months a go and it's always had good fuel.
  • BMW 5-Series E60 - Diesel Dilemma 29 Mar 2010 (Forum)
My wife nor my garage can discern my problem!!! In desperation I changed from filling up with diesel at my local Supermarket to a BP station, putting 2/3 tank of regular diesel to fill up. Almost immediately the car is running smoother, not quite as well as 3 months ago, but is this because I still had 1/3 of a tank of previous fuel.
  • Rover 75 (1999 - 2005) - (99-05) 2.0 Diesel engine cut-out 23 Dec 2007 (Forum)
On both these occasions I had allowed the level of diesel in the tank to drop to very low levels just prior to the engine failure but had refilled the tank and driven about 40 miles before failure. Diagnostic testing by a Bosch agent gave an error code which showed low fuel pressure and his educated guess was that the auxiliary fuel pump had an intermittent fault, but 2 instances in 11 months is not a lot to go on.
  • Price of Shell diesel 13 Nov 2007 (Forum)
I see that Shell have now introduced a credit card that gives you cashback of 1% on purchases but 5% on Shell fuel purchases for the first 60 days, then I believe it goes down to 3% after that. My local garage is Shell and at the beginning of the week diesel (I drive a diesel and tend to check the price) was 101.9 going up on tuesday to 103.9.
  • 4X4 that runs on both Petrol and Diesel 22 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Replying to Steve Boreham's post earlier this morning regarding exporting 4X4 to Sri Lanka, I remembered an incident from my youth; Colombo, early '80s; A friend of the family came to visit and knowing both my father and I were motoring enthusiasts happened to mention whether we had seen the new 4X4 that had just been introduced that runs on both Petrol and Diesel? We both looked at each other in puzzlement; I remember debating with him the possibilities of running an engine "dual-fuel". The discussion went on and on until we were thoroughly perplexed at how any manufacturer could achieve this without actually using 2 separate engines or changing the properties of the fuel itself.
  • 1.9TD XUD fuel filter draining 17 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Just been browsing the Haynes manual for my car (Citroen Xsara), and apparently I'm supposed to be regularly draining the fuel filter. Aha, says I, that's what that little hose is for. Now, according to the book, I unscrew the little valve and wait until diesel free of water emerges from the hose. Except nothing comes out, even if you completely remove the drain plug.
  • BP Ultimate Fuel 11 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I suppose this fuel is intended to rival Shell Optimax. Filled up the other day with BP Ultimate diesel and noted that it was 6p a litre dearer than my usual Total. Only did it because we do not have the BP or Shell round our way.
  • Shell Give You The Fuel For Free!! 26 May 2003 (Forum)
Just came back from a short trip to Iceland, where Shell have spent 250,000 (£ or $, not sure), installing their first real life hydrogen filling station. Suitably powered vehicles arrive next month & get the fuel free, for an unlimited trial period! It will be mainly busses & other public sevice cars/vans, initially, but still, perhaps a good idea, from a forward thinking government. Generally cost of living is double UK prices, but unleaded is about the same, with diesel just 1/2 our price!!
  • ford fiesta econetic 1.6 diesel - taking ford dealer to court over low mpg 26 Feb 2014 (Forum)
Hi I have owned various Fiesta Diesels models for 25 years and driven them over the same route. I recently bought a 6 month old ford fiesta "econetic" 1.6 diesel edge and the fuel economy is frankly appaling. I am now getting under 40 mpg on what is an urban cycle route which is way way  below the government figures,  the Honest John average (85% of claimed,) and also 20% less than I used to achieve on the same route with all 3 previous fiesta diesels (which all had emission levels over that claimed for this model).

  • Volkswagen Passat (1997 - 2000) - Can a 97 TDI run on bio-fuel or veg oil? 22 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I've informed a friend about the change in fuel tax laws, where alternative fuels attract no Excise Duty so long as you use less than 2,500 litres a year - enough for about 17,600 miles. He's just bought a nice 1997 Passat 1.9TDI (90bhp) version and would like to know whether it can be run on veg oil, or veg-oil/diesel mix?
  • Any - Diesels cutting out 14 Dec 2013 (Forum)
Yesterday HJ posted a Q/A in his Ask HJ section from Roppa http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/askhj/answer/48052/engine-cut-out-on-motorway---what-s-the-cause - Today, I have seen that the RAC is suspecting that modern "green" diesel containing bio-oils may be responsible for diesel filters blocking in cold weather. Could the two be related? While I know many do not believe in premium diesel, my car is filled only non-Bio fuel.
  • TOLEDO. OCTAVIA,BORA PETROL V DIESEL 16 Jul 2001 (Forum)
so its a OCTAVIA, TOLEDO before the BORA >>> Now the technical question for you boys in the backroom >>>>> Do i buy the petrol 1600 or the diesel 1900 tdi . Yes i know fuel consumption will be much better with the diesel but what about longevity for the engine which is the easiest to maintain considering 10 year lifespan and mileage of probably 8-9 k per year , mainly in short bursts with occasional good burst once a week.
  • Diesel or Petrol? 31 Mar 2013 (Forum)
In September I will be starting Uni, 11 miles each way on the motorway. I've been looking at Diesels for the fuel economy but now I'm not sure if I'm doing the right thing. Do I need a Diesel or Petrol? Any pointers as to which make/model to get considering an estate for boot space? Thanks to all who take the time to reply.
  • What 1.6 diesel to buy? 6 Dec 2012 (Forum)
Hi all, I've scrapped my idea of buying a Audi A3 and gonna buy a 1.6 diesel. I do 500/600 miles a week and a 2010-2012 five door hatchback diesel fits my needs. What's in important to me in reliability, fuel ecomony, looks and high spec. Budget would be around £14000-$15000 I would like to hear peoples opinions on what type of hatchbacks are out there.
  • revs or torque for a smaller turbo diesel ? 19 May 2009 (Forum)
I was wondering if smaller (below 1.9 Litres) turbo diesel engines need to be driven harder to achieve better fuel economy. I was chatting to a bloke down the pub the other night and he thinks that changing up each gear at 2.500 rpm is no good as he thinks at least 3.000 rpm to get the right revs for the next gear.
  • Diesel Engine Noise 3 Jan 2007 (Forum)
A subject I wanted to discuss for a while was why are some identical diesels more noisey at idle than others ? My A4 TDI 130 performs well, gets a good deal of hard motorway work and returns good fuel consumption, but tends to be noisier at idle hot or cold than other 'same-engined' cars such as other A4's or Passats etc.
