  • Peugeot 508 - Peugeot 508 2019 engine and clutch failure 2 Nov 2023 (Forum)
The biggest shock is the bill which is being quoted at £1200! An incredible amount of money and I know of no car outside a Porsche 911 that will cost so much. To further irritation, they are replacing the battery at £175 and the robbing swines at Peugeot breakdown assist charged me £96 for a 2nd tow as the dealer was shut at the time!
  • Citroen Berlingo Multispace (1998 - 2010) - 04 1.9D Cam belt 2 Jul 2008 (Forum)
On enquiring at the local Citroen dealer where I bought the car new, I was told it was out of guarantee so tough luck (or words to that effect). The Citroen customer service in Slough said the same. However, friends in the motor trade tell me that I should pursue the matter on the grounds that the car is not fit for purpose and the cambelt should not fail after 17K.
  • Dacia Sandero 1.2 Ambience - Spare Wheel/Tyre 17 May 2016 (Forum)
I have to say that I have been impressed with it and have had fun driving it (a low power 1.2 petrol vs. my old 2.0d x-type). When my car goes to the big scrappy in the sky I fancy one of these. He didn't get the 'emergency' spare wheel (£100+), but got the standard compressor and jar of glue (as useful as SFA IMHO). Nothing to do with me, except that we live in rural West Wales and my grand-daughters (4 & 6) are often in the car.
  • Ford Focus - Intermittent judder / injector problem 15 Oct 2014 (Forum)
Breakdown man diagnoses faulty injector with machine. I could hear one of the injectors making a ticking / pinking sound so accept this diagnosis.  BTW the problems developed while I was running quite low on fuel, but after filling up (at JET) it seemed to get even worse, before breaking down.
  • Vauxhall Astra H estate (2004 - 2009) - Any experiences with the 1.3 CDTi? 8 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I need it to tide me over for about the next 5 years until Mrs W and I are both fully retired and go to one car - at which point, we'll get something smart that'll see us out. A friend is due to retire shortly and has been offered his company Astra Club estate with the 1.3 diesel engine. He won't be buying it as he has the use of his son's car - and ultimately, he will want something a bit more powerful.
  • thank & where to buy 2nd Hand Caravelle? 26 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Looked at a right snotter of a T4 2.4 just now-yes that's the right size. Also looked properly at the HJ car by car breakdown, searched on here & found the t4 forum & the 2 german T5 ones-thank you once again. But you try finding a 2nd hand T4, let alone T5. Autotrader (so SWMBO says....she's usually spot on about these things..) has bog all.
  • show dogs transport- mpv or Van? 26 Aug 2006 (Forum)
And then 0.2 sec later I thought, my dogs, in airless noisy bumpy truck-no way. So it looks like a people carrier or mpv thing. VW T4 seems to come out well in car by car breakdown. What does the backroom consensus reccomend? Diesel preferred for economy. Speed/ acceleration not vital ( but must be able to get to motorway speed before end of slip road) but ride is.
  • 2006 Peugeot 307 SW 2.0 HDI 136 RHR 6 speed box - Clutch pedal springy at bottom of travel 19 Apr 2025 (Forum)
The clutch works fine but I'm about to do a 1500 miles trip in France visiting the my wife's family and don't want to get stranded without all the tools to change the clutch (breakdown cover only covers a repatriation up to the market value so the car would end being sc***ped in France). Thanks in advance Jon
  • ford focus 1.6 petrol auto 2011 - battery problem 20 Sep 2021 (Forum)
Self and wife help in caring for neighbour. Her car, serviced to date, has developed a fault which drains battery completely in a few seconds. Main ford dealer services always but now closed locally. Battery replaced with Halfords who changed it after a few months as thought it had "failed" and replaced on warranty.
  • Volkswagen Polo Sport 1.4 - VW Polo sport 1.4 Yellow engine warning light 16 Mar 2012 (Forum)
If I leave it without repair do you think this light will go after sometime. Do you think if I do mechanical breakdown cover insurance will it cover this type of engine emission fault. Please advise. Is this an non repairable fault. Should I get rid of the car. I can't keep spending money on like this. Please help
  • Winter Biking. 7 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Somewhere near Dijon I stopped to put plastic bags over my gloves and boots. Then it started snowing. I was riding with my feet down, following some car tracks in the snow. I remember stopping at a bar and asking how far it was to the border - they all laughed at me and said the pass was closed - I would never make it on a motorcycle. I carried on regardless (Seems foolish now of course - no breakdown cover or credit card in those days!)
  • The good service thread - Vol 1 17 Jan 2007 (Forum)
I dropped the car in this morning and picked it up a few hours later, I was initially shown a bill of around £210 inc parts, labour and vat however the service manager offered to call it quits on the basis of me redeeming the £100 credit note and in lieu of the missing AA cover.

  • Be careful out there! 29 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Most impotantly make sure your batteries and antifreeze are up to the job. Take a fully charged mobile phone and the garage/breakdown service number with you at all times! Think carefully about the route you're going to take. What are the roads like? Can you get help if you need it? etc. When you do set off, remember that it's probably a year or more since you last saw this weather, let alone drove in it.
  • Insurance warranties 8 Dec 2001 (Forum)
The Warranty Wise looks how I'd expect it to with specified components (& covers what I need) but the Drive Assured (Warranty Holdings) seems too good to be true - only normal wear & tear items are excluded. However it does state "Mechanical breakdown is the failure of a component, causing sudden stoppage of its function, for a reason other than wear and tear, normal deterioration or negligence". On a 10+ year old car this could be weasel words in that all components are subject to wear which just gets more noticeable the older the vehicle.
  • Nissan Almera Tino - vacuum pump help I think I've been ripped off 10 Sep 2016 (Forum)
So Q1 - how do I tell if it is actually a genuine brand new Nissan part? What part number should it have? Is £600 the right price for this? I got the car back on Friday - paying the huge £900 bill - and then yesterday the turbo went in spectacular style and now the car is dead and too expensive to repair. Any chance the two could be linked?. They also tried to charge me for 'oil' but the breakdown guy said there is no way the car has had new oil in it recently so I'm suspicious of everything now?
  • Nissan Qashqai - Faulty Nissan Qashqai 6 Feb 2015 (Forum)
The latest I have heard - found this out a couple of weeks ago - is that they are trying to source a donor part for the camera (this part being very rare...??) from the production line to test in our car. They have no timeframe as to when they can acquire it. They've come to this conclusion after having the car for about 110 days. In the last two months, I have asked numerous times that they provide with a written breakdown of all the work performed on our car - I have never received this.
  • Compensation from VW 18 Sep 2004 (Forum)
It runs much better now. My question is: Can I claim from VW for all the aggro I have had with this car. I have made numerous trips to the dealer over the past two years, which has meant taking time out of work. Transport has been a problem because the dealers usually need notice of a loan car booking - not easy when the car breaks down.
  • MX5 or MR2? 30 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Any points I have missed in comparing the two, anyone driven both and bought one?… Thanks, Andy Ps. Please don’t suggest a Griffith to keep in the garage for a 3rd car, she won’t buy that one, I have tried! pps. I have, of course, read the car-by-car breakdown!
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - Car towed to main dealer - what to expect? 17 Jun 2009 (Forum)
My questions are - is a dead turbo a long job and how long do you think I'll be without my car? And If a main dealer service section is fully booked do you think recoveries can and do jump the queue? And I see the turbo is mentioned in the car by car breakdown on here. Mine was first registered in June 03.
