  • Hyundai Getz - Cheap To Run Small Car Up To 3K? 14 Mar 2012 (Forum)
My parents gave me a low mileage Focus 1.6 automatic to replace my 16 year old K11 Micra as a second car.  The car is great it is lovely to drive but is too thirsty and costs £245 a year to tax.  I have decided to sell it and add some towards it to buy a cheap to run small petrol car.
  • Ford Focus Ghia 1.6 2006 - Check Engine Light and Alarm 30 Dec 2011 (Forum)
A few hours after locking the car the main alarm becomes disabled and the car can only be opened by using the key in the lock.  It seems like the car is in a factory mode where the alarm is automatically disabled after a period to prevent false alarms and discharged battery during transort and storage.  I sure I can get this fixed relatively easily by a ford dealer but if anyone knows a home fix please advise.
  • Vauxhall Omega Estate 2.2 Y22XE - Auto Gearbox fault 30 Dec 2011 (Forum)
I have a 2.2 Auto fully loaded CDXi Omega ESTATE registered Oct '99 on a V plate with cruise control which I am reliably informed by the local Vauxhall dealer has a Y22XE engine (matched also in service booklet data)  .... my gearbox has recently developed a problem ..... from cold it seems to take a long time to change from 1st to second then when the engine gets to 3500 rpm the orange engine management light comes on and the onboard computer dash screen states "automatic gearbox, check" - after registering this fault code the gearbox goes into "limp home" mode. My local trusted mechanic (who is not vauxhall main dealer and does not have access to a vauxhall diagnostic reader) is telling me that he has checked the fault code data with his machine and it would appear to him that the gearbox needs replacing as the fault is mechanical not electronic.
  • Problems with a BMW 320d 19 Sep 2011 (Ask HJ)

  • renault megane auto - endless starting problems 7 Mar 2011 (Forum)
On their advice I've had a new battery, had the antifreeze changed, the coils have been replaced, all the connections and wiring has been checked. Then both RAC and garage decided it was the interuptor switch (the switch that stops an automatic starting in gear) I've had that replaced. (Its also serviced regularly and flew through its MOT) But its still doing it. I can often get it going by pushing the gear shift right through the range quite roughly and back to P or N.
  • Renault Megane Cabriolet 1.6 CC 98 S Plate - Renault Megane - Rendom Engine Reving 12 Dec 2010 (Forum)
More often than not the problem is the engine revs too high.  It can be fine and then all of a sudden I am aware that the engine is pulling (like an automatic in drive or an old fashioned "choke" being out").  Quite often when this happens if in neutral the engine "revs" itself like a boy racer tapping the throttle and the revs bouce between 1500 and 2000.
  • What's wrong with my LPG-converted Volvo S70? 16 Sep 2010 (Ask HJ)

  • Toyota Celica (1994 - 2000) - Why would insurance company lie about quote? 27 Jan 2010 (Forum)
And when i suggested canceling and going else where, she said i'd have to pay the whole years premium for my current car (the Lantra) because i'm paying monthly and the insurance just started for that car rolling over for another year from November 2009 (i've been with them a few years paying monthly) and they renew automatically unless i say otherwise......but why would they lie about what the insurance for this car should come to? Discracefull...and she double checked my details when getting the quote over the phone!!
  • Ford Escort (1983 - 1990) - Bangers - buying an oldie 19 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Thing is my youngest daughter tried to learn to drive about 9 months ago but couldn't get the hang of gear changes/steering, etc all at the same time (whats that about females being able to multi task?!)... So she gave up... However she's decided to have another go, this time in an Automatic and came back yesterday after her lesson wanting more! So I want something cheap for her to practice in, it won't be doing much miles, just local pootling and as its just for practice I don't want to spend a lot of money...
  • Chrysler Voyager (1997 - 2001) - 98 3.3 problems starting car 28 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Please help we have been experiencing problems with our automatic petrol 3.3 Chysler Grand Voyager and are up againt the wall after running out of solutions. When you put in the key in the ignition the information centre lights come on and the car starts but none of the displays within the priemium instrument cluster work and the car dies after a few seconds the alarm light flashes and whilst on holiday this week it stayed on for 3 days.
  • Which used car to buy? 26 Mar 2009 (Forum)
The reason for wanting to change is partly because there are times on single carriageways when it would be really handy to have a more powerful car that could quickly zip around people going slowly in front of me, and partly just that I've had the Beetle for 4 years and feel like its time for a change to something a bit faster and more comfortable. The only other needs that I have are that it has to be an automatic, I don't want it to any less room in that back for adults or boot space than the Beetle, I don't want an Estate car and we like the idea of a BMW / Mercedes / Audi type car more than a Ford / Toyota / Vauxhall type.
  • Help! (hoping) to buy a nearly new van tomorrow 8 Jan 2009 (Forum)
The van has a balance of manufacturers warranty still left on it (10 months). I've been told that it is automatically valid to the next owner and that I dont need to do anything. Is this correct? 2/. The owner has not got the complete service history documents from the last year, but has said I can contact the Merc dealership and obtain all the service records from there.
  • Rover 400 (1995 - 1999) - 96 1.6 cold start/cooling fan on problem 29 Dec 2008 (Forum)
The one thing, looking at the wiring diagram, which could connect the two situations I feel is the coolant temperature sensor, which sends info to the ECU which in turn controls the fuel(including cold starting) and cooling fan amongst other things. So if this sensor goes belly up and sends out a signal that the engine is very hot, then I presume a)the fan kicks in and b)when you start from cold, the ECU is told not to use the automatic choke.Any thoughts would be most welcome as I loathe paying out a small ransom just for having it plugged in at the local dealers! One final word, does anyone recommend a possible handheld plugin diagnostic tool for using on the car or does anyone know of any technical bulletin on tracking down ECU/sensor faults that can be used instead.
  • Best Insurance Comparison Site 29 Sep 2008 (Forum)
They added £80 to the Confused price so I bought it there and then, but they said I had to call to cancel current policy otherwise it would be automatically re-newed. I did this and the person I spoke to said I should not have accepted the revised price because I was deliberately misleading them because I had not asked them to consider the impact on my no-claims which had gone from 5 years to 2 years because of the blow-out claim - which was mentioned on page three of five of my renewal notice.
  • Is this an insurance scam 27 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I can only assume it is a scam to get cover on a car for a few days/weeks to avoid the new cameras for automatically checking whether a car has insurance? The insurer (Zurich), my bank (Cahoot) and the police (Thames Valley) haven't really been very helpful in the matter. My bank suggested I do nothing as it only happened twice and just wait and see.
  • Mercedes Benz E-Class W124 (1985 - 2000) - 1994 E320 Coupe - Cruise Control problem 2 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I'm wondering if it's one of those "oh just clean electrical connector XYZ and it'll go away" problems, whether it's endemic to the car or whether it's a precursor to something more more serious/ expensive going wrong. Anyone here come across this? The car is a 5 speed automatic by the way and has the drive-by-wire throttle pedal. I've checked some of the many thousands of MB forums which basically seem to go in the direction of swapping out various expensive ECUs to see if the problem goes away.
  • Land Rover Defender (1946 - ) - Anybody ever washed a paper air filter? 30 Jan 2008 (Forum)
The LR Defender Tdi maintenance section says (only for elements not contaminated with oil or carbon deposits): soak the element for 15 to 60 mins in a solution of automatic washing machine detergent and water. Rinse in running water. Allow to dry naturally and dry fully before fitting. Do not attempt to clean a V8 air filter element. It must be renewed. The Mercedes W460/ W463 (G-wagon) manual states: blow out with compressed air first, soak for 10 minutes at 40 degC in washing solution specified in Service Products Specification Sheet 370 (which I can't find).
