BMW 5 Series E60 - BMW e60 520d auto gearbox problem 7 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Hi everyone - I have a problem with my e60 80k miles (since around 70k miles) . Changing from 2nd->3rd kicks very badly, especially in stop start traffic.. you can reproduce it in manual mode.. The BMW dealers reckon they want to do two gearbox oil changes to see if it will fix it.. despite it being "sealed for life" .. and my understanding that two oil changes are only to clear out contaminants.. and the onyl contaminants I can think of will be shards of the gears themselves! -
5W30 or 0W40? 12 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Re: Ford Fiesta 1.3 EFI (Endura) I am going to get an oil change in a couple of hours, but the people at Kwik Fit have thrown me. My problem is as follows: When I had my "Major" service at Ford last June, they did an oil change an used 5W30. Ever since then I have changed my own oil every 10k miles with Castrol Magnetec 5W30. -
Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 97 2.8 Oil change at National - 5W30 or 10w40? 29 Dec 2010 (Forum)
Just checked my oil and its looking a bit black, so I looked at National Tyres website for a oil & filter change. £30 for up to 7l of oil. They recommend 5W40 Castol Edge Fully Synthetic, but I usually use 10W40 semi-synth. -
Soot in the oil - via the EGR valve your views? 19 Aug 2009 (Forum)
http://www.oilrag.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/engine.jpg Yesterday did all the gaskets on the top cover to stop a slight oil leak - also blocked off the EGR valve with a gasket cut from a Gunk can. (more on that later) Then ran it down to Meadowhall and back and changed the oil and filter - using Shell Rimula R4. I`ve normally done 3,000 oil changes (filthy old IDI engine) which are half service interval and the cams and cambox were clean (black oil accepted) no sludge or cam surface wear, at 56,000 miles It`s occurred to me that with the EGR system no longer loading the oil with soot from the exhaust - that I might let the engine run to 5,000 miles or so on the oil. -
VW Golf 1.4 ryder (synthetic oil ) 4 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Hi I have A VW Golf 1.4 ryder that has done 130,000 miles. I`ve just had an oil and filter change at national tyres and discoverd that they have used synthetic oil (duckhams visco 7000 fully synthetic) I have never used synthetic oil before. Is it possible that this could cause damage i.e. dislodge baked-on deposits from mineral oils or affect gasgets and seals etc. -

Info gathering - Engine oil history 27 Aug 2009 (Forum)
There was a thread, on the TDI Forum about engine oil and PD engines. (In the lube section) An attempt was made to gather information - something like as below. I thought it may be interesting, to do similar on the range of cars owned by forum members ( not just PD) CAR OIL/S USED (oil heath history ;-) MANUFACTURERS SPEC CHANGE INTERVAL OIL RELATED ISSUES The idea was to cut and paste the above into a new post and then write answers. -
Toyota Avensis - tapping noise after oil changed 30 Nov 2020 (Forum)
Had the car serviced and I can hear a tapping rattle from the engine when it is cold. I think the garage used the wrong oil because this was not there before the service. The mechanic says he used the correct oil and he changed the oil and filter again for me but the noise is still there. Once properly hot it goes away. -
Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - The use of 10W40 engine oil in 03 PD 130 26 Jan 2008 (Forum)
or should we change the oil now to 5W40 before we start driving it? The oil was changed a week ago as the dealer serviced the car before the sale. We expect to do about 13K miles/year with this car so should we change the oil say every 10k instead of the long service? -
VW/Audi TDi Oil 22 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Does anyone share my opinion that the whole thing is a ruse designed to get people to have their oil changed only by a VAG dealer? After all, the owners manual does even try to convince you that you shouldn't attempt to change bulbs yourself, so it isn't like they won't try anything! Spoken to a couple of independent mechanics, and they tell me that anything marked 'for modern turbo diesels' will do absolutely fine. -
Oil remember this ! 21 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Anticipating a delay whilst they ordered and obtained the correct filter, I advised the manager that I had my own (pukka Saab) oil filter for them to fit. His reaction was one of astonishment and an outright refusal to change the oil using my own filter....muttering something about not being insured. Negotiations with him (me willing to sign a disclaimer) failed to change his decision. -
Corsa 1.4 - Foam in oil filler 22 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Just done a six month oil change on my daughters 1.4 Corsa (first one I have done as car is only 18 months old). Lots of creamish brown foam in the oil filler. Some sites list posible cause as HGF ! ! ! Car has done less than 3k in 18 months and generally on short runs (2 miles). -
Slapping pistons - oil and the human ear 4 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Small wonder then, that your ear picks up that slightly muffled mechanical noise on doing an oil change. Even doing an 8 month - 3,500 mile change on the 1.3 Multijet, yesterday. On Mobil one too - one of the worlds best oils. No measurable oil used during that 3,500 miles - so it seems the noise reduction on new oil, can only be from contrasting lowered oil viscosity of the old oil. -
Oil but not filter changed 17 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Upon doing so, oil looks fine, filled up to max level. However, i have a sneaking suspicion that the filter has not been changed, due to the markings I remember on the old one, although it's possible they've replaced the filter with the exact same make. -
What's the right engine oil for my car? 6 Jul 2019 (Ask HJ)
What's the right engine oil for a 2009 Citroen C5 2.0-litre petrol? There are so many brands and so many different types of 5/30 and 5/40 oils but which... -
Oil Change - Recommended or Interim? 26 Jul 2015 (Forum)
I must admit to being slightly nervous about that as previous diesels I have owned I have made sure that the oil has been changed every 8-10k miles. I spoke to BMW today who were quite confident that the 'modern oil' they use can withstand the rigours of such long service intervals. I'm no expert but, to me, engines are engines no matter what badges they have on and 18k seems a long interval. -
Oil changes 27 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Right, another question with a long history in the backroom, so I'll be careful to only ask about one sub-section of the topic. Having read the many opinions and ideas, I'm satisfied that it will be worth doubling up on my oil changes on my Accord (2.2 i-CDTI Tourer). However, I'm not sure when to start. Frist 12.5k miles is easy. All (Okay, most. Okay, some) advice says leave it. Then start changing on half schedule. But. -

Peugeot 1.6HDi 110 - oil capacity 25 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Not a drama but just want to get some oil for an oil change. Would rather not get the 5l as it's cheaper for 4x1L. Great price here: http://www.nielsencdg.co.uk/acatalog/Total_Quartz_Ineo_ECS_5W30_Engine_Oil.html#aTOT_2d166252 I get most of my oil from Neilsens. -
Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 97 1.2 emulsion in the oil reservoir 7 May 2009 (Forum)
I've no idea when it last had an oil change and service, she's in denial and wont let me talk about it! She's hoping it'll last another 2 months (without spending money on it), is there any chance? Would an oil change prolongue it's life at all?
