  • Bank Rate Down Again 8 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Those on many types of tracker mortgage are already paying nugatory amounts of interest - one example I read said the current reduction made some tracker mortages cost pennies (yes, pennies) per month interest repayments (capital excluded) on sums of £100K or so. The current crop of car finance offers mostly seem to hover around the 6-12% range - what does the odd half percent cut do for these? Not much I'd say - if you're not buying at 6%, you'll probably not buy at 5.5% (I know retail 3rd party rates don't quite work linearly - but generally it's how it will work out).
  • Toyota RAV 4 (2000 - 2006) - Deal or no deal? 20 Nov 2008 (Forum)
She has offered it to me at the p/ex price of £6k, and in addition will have a 62k service (with new cambelt)and 2 new tyres fitted if I buy it from her. My finances allow me to puchase it without borrowing, something I would never do anyway!. My own dearly loved immaculate Mazda 626 I could probably sell privately, and running costs should be comparable. I have 24 hours to decide before she p/exs it at the LR dealer, and before anyone suggests it, she will not be swayed from a Defender!
  • Good deal M. Benz ?? 11 Aug 2008 (Forum)
It looks very clean all over , comes with a 12 month warantee I suggested £10 k to the salesman, no PX / Finance , and although he scoffed initially, he didn't dismiss it out of hand. We'd agreed I'll email my quote and he'll ' have a word ' . I know about the new model before anyone pipps up... my question is - at £10 k will it be too much still in this climate for a 4 year old car ?
  • A new car every three years - sensible? 7 Feb 2008 (Forum)
A relative told me that "this is the cheapest way to do it as if you wait any longer you don't get a decent deal on the part exchange". Now, I don't know know much about cars but that sounded strange to me. I work in finance and know my way round a spreadsheet so I set to work. After a couple of hours playing around with initial costs, depreciation schedules and projected servicing charges I came to the conclusion that buying three cars every 10 years incurs roughly twice the cost you would be facing if you bought one car every 10 years.
  • LR Defender- to buy or not? 17 Jan 2007 (Forum)
During the next 6 months I am having a house extension built, and once complete, will assess my finances and purchase a car. The LR will be useful for building materials, and I plan to sell the VW LWB Hi Roof Transporter 2.4D as I fancy a change after 9 years...despite its fantastic reliability. The LR has had one owner from new, tax to October, FSH, new tyres and a genuine 70k miles.
  • RAV 4 Depreciation - Trade in Value 13 Dec 2006 (Forum)
I am also wondering whether I am being treated like an idiot in being told there is no reduction on the list price - on mentioning the What Car target price I was told, basically, that this was all a lof of nonsense. Of course, I would get another £1,000 on the car if I go down the finance route (although, as this is not 0%, it would not save me the £1,000 quoted). Any advice would be really welcome. My instinct is to go to another dealer. Thanks for your knowledgeable advice.
  • selling from home 5 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Local papers / auto trader 2, should I set up a 3 month warranty if the car is not under manufacturer?s warranty 3, should I set up a facility if possible for finance? Any advice would be helpful and i would be very interested in hearing from others who currently offer this service.
  • An answer to my wife's need for a car 11 Aug 2006 (Forum)
My wife hasn't had a car for over a year and she is yearning for another, but she is on maternity leave at the moment so finances are tighter than they have been. We were discussing this and agreed that when she goes back to work a priority will be a car for her. Last week she was out and saw a notice on one of the lamposts on the street next to ours.
  • Replacement 7 seater 11 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Anyway, she will have almost no money for a deposit for the replacement, but at least she had GAP insurance to cover the difference between the expected payout and the amount owing on the finance. As you know, SWMBO has a diesel Trajet and we may let MiL have this on a soft loan. Our Trajet is only 14 months old so MiL is getting the benefit of a professional son-in-law! So the question is....
  • Catch 22 6 Apr 2005 (Forum)
His current car will fall to bits if subjected to this but he can't afford to replace the car with anything more than another banger of more than about £400 so no gain from his current old cavalier. Finance is really out of the question too. I suggested short term contract hire that I would pay for but he'd be driving the car. Are there any places that do good 6-12 month deals and let someone else be the main driver?
  • Buying a C2 tomorrow 8 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Do dealers have much scope to haggle on price - it would be a straight cash deal but he would consider finance if it worked out a better deal over the term.? Or is any haggling going to come in the form of accessories? There are 3 main dealers we are going to look at, should we be honest and say by end of day we will we buying a car from one of them so that they open up to us?
  • MOT conundrum 8 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I obviously wish to minimise the fine, but is it more advantageous to myself to say that i clean forgot about the MOT, or tell them the above story about my finances. Any help would be most appreciated.
  • Advice please on an estate.... 3 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I like the octavia estate but I would prefer something a bit bigger and with a bit more poke. What would be my best way of financing this, I would not be buying the car outwright.Would it be cheaper for the company to buy the car and I pay TAX as per normal? Any other suggestions welcomed ! Cheers, Mike.
  • Breakdown 6 Jun 2003 (Forum)
The spool may or may not be available separately (although most Renault bits are thankfully pretty detachable, intentional or otherwise) but at the moment, my car is in Slough, I am in London and there's no chance of it being repaired before Tuesday, when I have a very full day and no way of actually meeting the mechanic who is going to do the work. If I could get finance on a newer car, I so would!
  • Which affordable diesel family car? 30 May 2003 (Forum)
I'm not in the luxury car market, so any BWM/Merc/Saab/Volvo recommendations are (sadly) not an option - are they? I guess I'd be looking around the 10k mark (including part-ex) and would need some kind of finance (e.g. personal loan at around 6%). The HDci Mondeo (130bhp) seems the best option so far, but any other cars I should be considering? I like the idea of the Golf TDi (150 bhp), but not sure that a) it will be big enough for the family and b) cruise control is an option on this car.
  • New car dilema 12 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Originally £17,999 2001 Y S60 2.4T with Winter pack and Electric Roof - 5500 miles for £14999 with a guarantee to match the Vauxhall finance. The price difference between the two is not a concern, as I will be spending £2000 fitting the Omega with Jag style Dual Exhaust pipes and other Irmscher add ons. However, while I am a Vx fan, have a fondness for omega's, and am sure the Star Silver V6 will look a treat, my head says 'Volvo'.
  • How long do you have to reject a car? 26 May 2002 (Forum)
Is it too long in to it's life? (20 months and 19,000 miles) Obviously I have still been paying the finance payements all this time, despite being without the car for extended periods. I have always followed the manufacturers running in procedure and regularly check the oil and water levels Any help would be much appreciated Graham
  • Honda Africa Twin crf1000 - Honda Africa Twin im rejecting 4 Apr 2023 (Forum)
After 3 weeks fault diagnosed as the same fault, and the fix is wash out the tank and completely renew the fuel system. At this I point I put a notice into Honda finance, as this is a PCP bike that I want to reject it under section 9,24 of the consumers rights act 2015. I have already given Honda a chance to repair it once and section 19 states that I have to allow one repair.

  • The perfect cheap used car 29 Sep 2025 (Forum)
I prefer buying privately because you get to meet the last owner face to face and seeing where they live tells you a lot about how their attitude to maintenance and their personal finances. This one was on the drive of a particularly nice large home and the very pleasant lady who occupied it had recently had a promotion and car allowance which was the reason for selling despite recently having shelled out for new tyres, rear calippers and a full service.
