  I've just watched tonights progamme on the telly. Have I got it right, that Traffic cops can just drive round with their car automatically reading number plates and checking them for road-tax and insurance (and pretty soon M.O.T. certificate once they get a new elastic-band to fix the computer)? Also, are car-parks etc being fitted with ANPR cameras so that untaxed and (possibly) uninsured cars automatically get caught?

  I have a 1997 VW Passat 110 TDI, and it has recently developed a slight fault with the screen wiper controls. When pulling the wiper stalk to operate the washer jet, it should automatically wipe whilst the jet is on, and (on releasing the stalk) continue to wipe 3 more times to clear the screen. Last week it only automatically wiped whilst the jet was on - it stopped the wipers in park position immediately on releasing the stalk.

    NB this isn't as detailed as our last resident road tester, jamie No surprise here for the car I've been loaned while the E300 has some paintwork carried out. As my car is an automatic I've been loaned a bright red Corsa automatic. This one is 1.2, 05 plate, twinport? Corsas seem to be a favourite for any bodywork specialists My Merc is the 3rd auto I've driven over any distance.

  My Altea is a 2.0 (FSI) Sport automatic, I have had it from new, there is 52000 miles on the clock, and it is 3.5 years old. {so approx 2004 then? I'll add it to the subject header, as per the requests mentioned here and there} In February this year, 2008, I had a major fault with the coils to the engine (sorry I have the error code somewhere but could not find it this evening), which when checked at my SEAT dealer was identified as a problem only applicable to the 2.0 petrol automatic engines used in the first three months of the model being launched (my engine fell into this category) that required the engine coils to be replaced free of charge.

I know older automatics can be problematic so preferably trying to avoid any with widely known issues (aren't we all!). I will say we've had three DSG autos with no problems but I know they get bad press? I'm not bothered about the driving experience particularly...

  I bought a used Skoda Fabia Automatic (2011) with ~40,000 miles on the clock - for about £5600. I bought it from an independent dealer, and it came with a 6 month RAC warranty. After 6 months and 2 weeks, just out of warranty, it developed problems with the automatic gearbox.

  I have a 52 Vauxhall Vectra 2.2 Automatic. Recently I have experienced the strangest fault. When driving along, the car will seem normal, and then the enging light and the spanner symbol appear. When you put it over to manual the 5 will appear, however when you try and kick down a gear with either the pedal or the manual lever, it stays in 5th gear.

  I have a Renault Megane Scenic Alize 1.6v (V reg) Automatic that has recentl;y started playing up, have just bought it second hand in December 2007, the problem is this: Last Sunday i drove to Birmingham, it started to rain and then after a few miles my gear box started playing up, no power, sluggish and when stopped the car was vibrating, like a car that is idling but just managing to stay running, you know, close to cutting out/ stalling.

  Hi I will be purchasing the new shape Mazda 6 2.0 TS2 in a few months time, however I am having trouble deciding on whether to opt for the manual or the automatic version. I live in London and only do 5000ish miles per year; however a lot of these miles generally involve stop/start traffic, and bumper to bumper crawls on the A406. When I am sitting in these traffic jams, I dream of how easy life would be in an automatic, and how much my left leg would thank me for one!

I'm in the market for a used compact MPV with a budget of around £8000, looking for an automatic to accommodate both me and wife (never had to buy automatic before) and prefer one with 3 full size seats in middle row. Been looking for weeks and now stuck on Ford S-Max, Peugeot 5008, VW Touran maybe Citroën Grand C4 Picasso.

  I'm looking at options to replace my 2011 Polo automatic, which I have owned from new. Never had any issues with it, but my commute now involves the motorway and I feel a little vulnerable in the Polo in terms of safety/performance/reliability. Looking for another automatic and a Honda Jazz has been suggested based on reliability, higher driving position and roominess, but having test driven a couple I'm not wholly convinced.
