A fan of air cooled classics, Paul had previously restored a Volkswagen Beetle but had been looking for a Porsche 914 for ages. ‘The car has undergone a bare metal restoration over the past four months in the bodyshop,’ explains Paul. ‘It’s now immaculate, having had new interior trim and all the seats reupholstered, and only has 17,000km on the clock.

  Another Mercedes that caught buyers’ attention was a 1964 600, formally owned by travel tycoon, Simon Spies, sold for €140,630 - more than €20,000 over its lower estimate. Other notable lots included a time-warp 1974 Volkswagen Beetle barn find with just 90 km from new, which sold for €38,250. While a 1991 BMW 850i, pictured above, with just one owner and an indicated mileage of 1759 km sold for €87,750 - believed to be a new world record price.

  So far there have been 2,453,426 new cars registered in 2015, an increase of 6.2 per cent on the same 11 month period in 2014. It has been reported that Volkswagen sales are down 20 per cent in November versus October, but it’s too early to tell if the drop in sales is a direct result of the diesel emissions scandal, since unaffected manufacturers including Citroen, Lexus, Fiat and Nissan saw similar reductions in sales volume in November 2015.

  Frankfurt Motor Show 2015: SEAT unleashes most-powerful Ibiza Cupra ever 15 Sep 2015 (News)
  .  As well as getting a bigger engine - it previously used a 1.4-litre - the Ibiza Cupra gets more torque and a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. The engine is the same powerplant found in the Volkswagen  Polo GTI , which producs 192PS and 320Nm of torque, almost 100Nm more than the old Ibiza Cupra. The power boost provides a Ford Fiesta ST rivalling top speed of 146mph, with power delivered to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.
