  • Peugeot 309 (1986 - 1993) - Advice on buying an older diesel. 25 Oct 2008 (Forum)
It's being sold for £300 by a guy that looks as if he could be trustable. I took it for a test drive and it seemed solid enough (don't have any experience of driving old diesels) though it might need new brakes (I only have modern car brakes to compare it to). The car itself was in really good condition considering its age, it's had 3 owners, original car guide and service history all there (though just stamps, no details).
  • Bought a car with no service book - what can I do? 27 Sep 2008 (Forum)
A few days later he rung back saying that the latest owner had lost the book and so he's ordered me a new one from Hyundai. With the car having done 15k when I bought it, it was due a service 5000 miles ago and without the old service book, I've no proof that it was serviced on time and thus I fear that the remainder of the 5 year warranty (1 year) will be gone down the drain (the dealer didn't provide any warranty either).
  • Evidence of care towards future owners? 11 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Then I understood it, the lowest common denominator at work. Young guys, usually still teenagers with a popular `in` car wanting the prestige of new, car bought by parents, or flush with money due to no commitments. No regard, other than saving money *now*. For the next 10 or 15 years the car goes on through buyers often financially stretched and likely someone picks up a big bill due to the first owners lack of care about future owners. 3) 18 months ago I looked at used cars for the first time ( before buying new again) There were engines with badly `salted` aluminium.
  • C`Rail misfueling Engineers solutions? 18 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Someone is going to cross a border and find the diesel pump won`t fit. An onboard car solution then, not filling station related? An initial thought was a sensor in the tank that picked up on the petrol and shut the car down, pump stops running when the filler flap is opened and car is totally dead the until tank is drained?
  • Almera 1.8 Auto 9 Mar 2006 (Forum)
To get it to Castle Donington would mean me paying a deposit of £200 which, apparently, is refundable, if I don't like the car. To which I would ask, why ask for the £200 then? I don't want to get into an argument about why I don't want the car, so I am not risking losing £200. We went to see one a 3 door S model, at a local specialist in ex motability cars, but it was really too much money for the age of the car, even though it had only covered about 13K miles.
  • Any sane insurance companies? 18 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Yet because, over a year ago, someone nudged the company car I had at the time in a car park while I was in a meeting in a mile away, I am being quoted £1050 for fully comp.with £400 excess. Without this claim the prem would have been £750. One price is from a company which has been recommended here, the other a broker picked at random.
  • Laguna - franchised dealer problems 1 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I am still disgruntled about the discs though, and this latest thing is just the final straw. If I hadn't complained to Renault, I'd be down £730 on a 3 yr old, 24000 mile car. Almost as much as it cost to buy my wife's car! And that's cost far less to run over the same period.
  • Vauxhall Astra J SRi - Extra headrest: Do I have to declare to insurer? 24 Apr 2024 (Forum)
    SAGA helpline were interested in the query but haven’t come back to me yet. Unfortunately I didn’t keep the old seatback so that one is a non starter, and yes, although the car has since passed several MOT tests, I did fit the seatback myself at home. I will ask my garage about this tomorrow. p { line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0.25cm; background: transparent }
  • Mercedes Benz SLK AMG - Young driver reversed into my car. 2 Feb 2021 (Forum)
Evening, a young 17 yr old reversed x 4 into my car on an uphill and cracked my bumper.  Despite having dashcam footage of the incident. He is claiming that the noise in the car from his three passengers and music was so loud that he didn't hear the impact and drove off.
  • Suzuki Baleno - 'Tis the season for contemplation 28 Dec 2019 (Forum)
Also unfashionable enough to be sensibly priced. I have a local main dealer. I now accept the fact that I don't enjoy fiddling about with cars any more and really just want reliability and something that fits my modest needs. I am very tempted by this car. It seems a reasonable compromise between the old and the daft brand new PCP cycle.
  • Mazda 6 diesel - Mistake, or not? 1 Aug 2019 (Forum)
Advice which, I hasten to admit,  I accumulated not through personal experience, but through reading positive comment about Mazdas on here.  He's blissfully happy with it so far. He tends to hang onto his cars until way beyond the point where they're worth much, previous example being an 8 year old 2.2 petrol Vectra which had about 65k on the clock and which developed a fuel problem that nobody could get to the bottom of without spending more money than the the car was worth.
  • Decisions, decisions 16 Dec 2018 (Forum)
Hi all I've got a bit of a car dilemma.  Need to get a replacement car, and have four very different choices. I'll use it for the commute to work and occasional long trip and airport runs (me flying). Would apprecaite any thoughts, i've managed to confuse myself!
  • 2016 Ford Focus 1,5 TDCi 6 Speed Manual - 2016 Focus 1,5 TDCi Clutch/Transmission/Gearbox 24 Jul 2018 (Forum)
I have previously owned a 5 gear 1.7TD Escort Estate (up to 120,000 miles) and a Fiesta 1.4 16V Zetec Petrol driven up to 160,000 (first clutch change at 100,000, first exhaust at 130,000).  Just purchased a 20 month old 2016 Ford Focus 1,5 TDCi 6 Speed Manual with 37,000 on the clock. It is supposed to be a motorway car for work. Drives lovely on the motorway and currently averaging 65 MPG. Plus like putting foot down when required to overtake, loving the Turbo again.
  • Audi A3 Sportback - Advice from owners for used premium car purchase? 2 Aug 2017 (Forum)
So am considering moving to a premium make, which I'd say are Audi/Merc/BMW/Volvo, with a budget of around £10K used. This will be the most we've ever spent on a car, and I've typically had Citroens, which have been unreliable. From what I've read, an Audi A3 will suit but the field's wide open. Am really wanting something a bit more fun to drive. It needs to be comortable, quiet and well-equipped - inside, at least - with low/no tax, up to five years old, and with acceptable mileage for the age.
  • Vauxhall Zafira A - error codes - BDO or BDO2. 52 plate Zafira 29 Jul 2016 (Forum)
I have a 52 plate Zafira 1.8 auto which I rarely use so when I do use it the battery is usually dead, but after a recharge it'll start first turn of the key, here's the but every time weird things happen with the indicator lights on the gear change console and the dash also it'll go into safe mode (although I can manually change gear no problem) after running around for a while and a few ignition off and ons the lights on the gear change console sort there selves out and it starts running as normal but the Traction Control (car skidding in a triangle) and the Engine Electronics (car with a spanner on top) stay on. This has been happing for years. I brought the car when it was 6 months old but unfortunately I had an accident at work which has left me disabled hence the reason I don't use it much.
  • Fraudulent insurance claim leading to more 8 Jan 2016 (Forum)
I have a friend who was contacted by his insurance company due to a claim that he was in an accident and wrote off someone's car.  My friend was not in an accident and so following investigation his insurance company rejected the claim.  I've seen the photos of both cars, my friends car has not been in an accident, and the other car is an old banger with a bumper literally falling off.
  • Ford Fiesta - MOT mileage discrepancy from franchised dealer 5 Nov 2014 (Forum)
Hi, Looking for a bit of advice. I bought a 4yr old Fiesta (ex Motability) from a Ford franchise dealer few weeks ago. Car was advertised with 21k miles on clock and sales documents from dealer state this as mileage. Last week when the new DVLA documents came though I went to check when the next MOT was due and logged onto the DVLA/VOSA website and got shock when mileage on site said 34k from the first (and only) MOT in June 2014.
  • Vauxhall Vectra B - Vectra B starting issue 17 Apr 2014 (Forum)
    b) why would it draw the air in when parked up/switched off ? (there are no issues when the car is running, its never cut out once started). i have also noticed over the past couple of days that if i park the car either "bonnet down" on a bit of a hill or on a kerb with the passenger side raised it starts 1st time without priming (weird or coincidnce).
  • Rover 25 - Rover 25 repairing window and winter service help! 9 Oct 2012 (Forum)
I am a car novice and off work skint at the mo but will have a go at anything to make sure her car is safe for her. One slight problem is the passenger side electric window will not shut all the way up, it leaves a gap of approx 0.5cm which I just cannot seem to rectify, is there a quick fix for this?
  • VW Golf mk VI 1.6TDi (Oct 2009) - 60K service done - but expensive 3 Apr 2012 (Forum)
Two new front tyres   Now, it turns out the front tyres had worn out as a result of tow-out camber. I saw them - they were indeed almost bald along one side. It was a high mileage car when we bought it used at just one year old. Probably a former hire car. The garage replaced both the worn tyres with Potenza R050A Bridgestone 505 55 16R 91W (tubless) brand tyres. Its not a brand I am familiar with but they weren't cheap - 110 Euros each!!
