  • Which one? - Buying 11 Mar 2015 (Forum)
Hi there   I'm looking to buy a small family hatchback.  I would like something reliable, little or no road tax, preferably diesel and nice to drive - it has to have 5 doors too. Im looking to buy pre-reg. I have narrowed down the following:   Toyota Auris - been for a test drive and was ok. Doesn´t have cheap road tax and the interior looked a bit bland.
  • Jaguar X type 2.2d Automatic - Turbo Charger Actuator 22 Oct 2014 (Forum)
Turn off ignition and wait a minute or so and the fault disappears only to return again at some random driving condition.
  • MK 3 Mondeo 2.0 Diesel Auto - Torque Converter and Brakes issues 26 Sep 2014 (Forum)
Hi,   I have recently bought a 05 Mondeo Auto 110K  I have noticed while towing I am getting a lot of shudder in the car  ( like running over cattle grid/ or about to stall) when towing the car. It seems to be around 55mph, Revs just under 2000mph.  It happens occasionally when driving the car normally. When changing from D to P with the engine on, there is a vibration on the stick but nothing like the shudder when driving.  I am right in thinking this could be
  • Tipper Truck and Limp mode - Two Surprises OUCH! 24 Sep 2014 (Forum)
Oooof! Driving up an A road couple of days later, car shoots across from the right (VW passat) and suddenly loses power and then proceeded to drive very slowly up the road, obviously unable to accelerate. I managed  to brake sufficiently to stop, and when we pulled into a petrol staion the driver said sorry, I saw you etc and said he would call the breakdown services.
  • Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi 2003 - Focus 1.8TDCi 2003 with random engine cutout 11 Feb 2014 (Forum)
After waiting by the roadside for a few minutes with the ignition off, the car restarts as normal and drives away as if nothing ever happened. This has occurred 3 times in last 2 days over about 100 miles of driving.   I have hooked the car up to an OBD connector and phone app which tells me that there are no recorded fault codes.
  • All especially including silver grey Mondeo's - Teeny space saver wheels well really just discs 23 Oct 2013 (Forum)
How long and how far can you drive with one of those stupid space saver wheels, before it constitutes a danger to other motorists. For the last two weeks a clearly liveried corporate Mondeo (a computer firm summat to do with baby oak tree seeds) has to my certain knowledge been driving around with a rear drivers wheel using the tiny space saver disk.
  • Honda FRV - LPG Conversion - city driving 9 Aug 2012 (Forum)
This question is inspired following reading the thread started by the gentleman with a v6 petrol 607. I have been driving a petrol Honda FRV for the last 2ish years. It has been very reliable and an ideal family car so I intend to keep it for the next 5 years. I have been thinking of an LPG conversion but cannot actually work out whether or not it is a good idea.
  • Sold car, buyer phoning me about problems 14 May 2012 (Forum)
He came today with his mechanic to pick it up, money is safe in my bank account, and the mechanic took it for a drive, he said there was an issue with the wheel bearings, so while on the drive we took it to two garages who test drove it and stated there were no wheel bearing problems. He's now rang me to say the brakes were juddery on the way home.
  • Mercedes E270CDI - Ticking Like Clock ....when engine on and off??? 15 Feb 2012 (Forum)
After stopping and restarting all was fine. Now notice a loud intermittent ticking noise from engine - just like a clock - when i drive it. Last night the car made the same noise when switched off and parked on my drive. I've unplugged the battery to stop it. Could it be related to the car alarm? At times when ticking there is also a muted occasional blast of alarm siren!
  • Any - 3rd gear at 30 - is it more fuel economical? 31 Aug 2011 (Forum)
It is related to the use of 3 rd gear as being the best gear to use when driving on a 30 mph limit road.   Apparently, it is usual for motorists to rush into 4 th gear, and trundle along at a little over idle engine speed , whereas it would be better to change down to 3 rd and drive at higher engine revs.
  • Need a narrower car 2 Jun 2011 (Ask HJ)
I drive a SAAB 9-5 Aerodeck 04-Reg and I am fed up with the tight squeeze in and out of my garage. I would like to buy a smaller car with all or more of...
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 02 1.9 engine stalls during driving without warnin 11 Mar 2011 (Forum)
I have done nearly 90,000 miles without experiencing this problem before. In the last two weeks the car stalled twice while driving for some time and was jittery a few more times without stalling. When taken to a garage the mechanics on both occasions said the fuel system had air in it and when they pumped it out the engine started without a problem.
  • Vauxhall Zafira - Replacement for a Zafira? 8 Feb 2011 (Forum)
If I buy a new car what do I buy?   I need something that will carry skis, be comfortable to drive across Europe in the winter and will fit the roofbox (2.30m) and even better the chains that I already have.  I drive about 15-20k miles a year I only have a maximum of £3000 to spend Any suggestions
  • Ford S-MAX - Whining noise 6 Jun 2010 (Forum)
This sounds more like a bearing, but 25,000 miles seems early for one to go and maybe they all make the same noise?  The dealer certainly didn't think it sounded odd on the test drive, but then he wouldn't!  The car feels normal to drive. Thanks for your help.
  • Volkswagen Golf Plus (2005 - ) - 05 1.9TDi cambelt problem. 16 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I have only had the car three weeks. and it has already been back to the dealers as the engine light came on as i was driving and the car would loose power, that problem has been fixed as i was told there was a loose wire in the engine, now I have been told it needs a new cambelt, the car has only done 35000 miles. The dealers may want me to pay for this, should I be paying for it as I have refused too..and also they told me it is safe to drive even though i do alot of motorway driving.is the car still safe too drive as I have lost all faith in the car and the dealers, thanks..
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 99 1.8 almost stalls when idle,foot on clutch = ok 29 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Hi, Just drove the car back from the garage after having a cracked water pipe replaced. On the drive back the car would almost stall when sitting at lights idling. When I put my foot on the clutch the car was ok. Problems started when the engine overheated due to the cracked pipe. It overheated whilst i was parked up (engine still running) sitting outside a shop after a 50mile motorway drive and then a short drive from motorway to the shop.
  • Volkswagen Polo IV (2002-2005) - 04 1.4 Manifold pressure fault code help 24 Jan 2010 (Forum)
RAC came out and read it on the computer and it said "manifold atmospheric pressure sensor fault". RAC didn't look beyond reading the computer, but said safe to drive home even though had an 80 mile journey. It did drive home okay though. Am I safe to drive this for another 4 days (160 mile return each day) as I can't get it to a garage before this? I'm clueless as to what the manifold pressure is!
  • Winter tyres trial 6 Jan 2010 (Forum)
I have had these on for a week and they are outstanding. Grip is excellent in snow and slush and good even on ice. Last night I had to drive the ranger and ended up sliding into a kerb on a corner and slightly damaging a wheel. Driven the ibiza again this morning and it is massively better and much more reassuring to drive. The only thing is to not become overconfident and also remember that other cars dont have the same level of grip.
  • Drink driving - possible sentence? 14 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Am new to this site but wondered if anyone had any advice for me? My finance was stupidly caught drink driving in the early hours of yesterday morning. Pulled over in routine check, no accident, no other vehicles involved. Blew 73mg breath - arrested, charged and bailed before magistrates 29/05/08. Problem.

Hi my 1998 2.0 16v automatic gls vectra b has a sport drive button on the top of the gear stick, until now it has worked fine and has always shown a small orange light on the dash indicating its in use, and you certainly know when your in sport mode as the gears do not change so quickly as in normal drive.
