  • Legal position can we take dealer to small claims 19 Dec 2007 (Forum)
My sister's car (Second hand 4 years old 80K full dealer history - out of warranty) decided to die about 6 weeks ago. it was recovered to a main dealer who quoted £2000 for replacement parts ie :Blown turbo, Intercooler etc.
  • Jaguar S-Type (1999 - 2007) - No discs to be had for S-types 20 Nov 2007 (Forum)
We both found it incredible that service items like discs should be in such short supply that a hire car has to be provided indefinitely until supply resumes. I also can't believe that he couldn't be got going again if someone were to take his old discs to the local machine shop so they could be resurfaced; possibly to be replaced with new discs at a later date.
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 30K since last Service - no oil change please it's 16 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Awaiting my car being MoTd (+ minor repair) last week at my local independent I heard the following A 54 Reg BMW 3 series was mis-firing. The plugs were BLACK. On looking at the service book it had not seen an service for 30K miles (18mths). 4 x new plugs and 1 x Coil seemed to fix it.
  • Peugeot 405 Petrol (1988 - 1996) - Problem with crank position sensor 10 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Strange combination but all compatible with each other. I have 3 crank sensors available to me, all exactly the same part numbers etc, 1 is from my old car, 1 is from a friends car and 1 is brand spanking new. All of them read around 380 ohms resistance which is bang on the money according to autodata, problem is all of them only generate around 1.8 volts when cranking the engine but they are supposed to be around 4 - 8 volts according to autodata.
  • Omega Write-off Value 3 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Hi All Some woman in a Mazda 6 rear ended my miggy this morning on the way to work. She hit me good and hard - her airbags went off and it took two tow trucks to winch the cars apart. My car is 8 years old, so given that and the damage my insurers have decided it's a write-off. Which is a shame, really. I'd got it all sorted (after 4 and half years of ownership) and it was running nicely with everything working.
  • Ford Focus steering question 22 Mar 2007 (Forum)
When I test drove a Ford Focus I did not notice anything and I've driven my car over the same roads. Does anyone know if this vibration is normal and to be expected and does anyone have any suggestions of how it can be reduced?
  • Meaningless report on new VW by BBC 6 Mar 2007 (Forum)
That diesel in Europe costs about 1 euro a litre so he did about 500 miles at (optimistically) 10 miles a litre. That is 45.54 mpg isn't it? My old BX did more than that, my Berlingo does a lot more than that - and I bet ther are many people on here who would be very disappointed with that mpg from their cars. Now, I might well have got it wrong in what he said exactly, and my maths ain't too hot either!
  • C-Class - Wheelnuts Sheared 6 Dec 2006 (Forum)
I assume the problem is that the nuts were overtightened (at least one wheel is down to a certain national tyre company, who used an air-gun). No doubt I have no call-back on them as they had the car weeks ago. Planning to limp home on my 3 wheelnuts, I've booked the car into my local garage, who I assume will have some way of getting the studs out. They have suggested that if the nuts were over-tightened that much there's a good chance I'll need new hubs and that'll cost me a fortune.
  • Rover 420iS mystery 26 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I have a Sept 1999 Rover 420 IS with 77,000 miles on the clock. It has been regularly serviced at the required intervals & has been a brilliant car. However, it has recently started to run very roughly from starting & continues like this throughout the day-does sometimes get better but is particularly noticeable if in too high a gear. The mechanic who services the car has changed the leads & the plugs and I have filled up the last 3 times with BP Ultimate, with a shot of Redex in each time but none of this has cured the problem.
  • Switching to Petrol from Diesel 1 May 2006 (Forum)
I'm just about to buy my next car and have almost decided that I'm going to ditch diesel after having driven only that in my five years with a licence, and would be interested in the views of nayone who's done the same and regretted/would recommend making this move.
  • Almera N16(2004) Handbrake Warning Light 6 Apr 2006 (Forum)
As per the subject, really. My 18mth old Almera's suddenly started to flash the brake fluid / handbrake on light when I'm going around corners. Doesn't seem to matter whether it's left or right turns. I've checked the brake fluid level - there's plenty in there (the car was serviced no more than 2mths ago so I would hope that there would be), so I've discounted low fluid levels.
  • VAG brake disks/pads 4 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Had the car down for a service recently and the mechanic advised me that the disks as well as the pads needed changing quite soon. Disk looks ok to me, I thought, but he told me the wear is on the inside only.
  • Peugeot 405 Battery Drain....or not ? 20 Feb 2006 (Forum)
S I disconnected the battery for two days to remove the drain, and of course the car started up Then, another guy told me that half an amp is normal, as the clock and radio memory use that much when the car is sitting. Just seems like a lot of current to me for a clock and a memory on a radio......Leave the interior or side lights on (I think a 25 W bulb is about half an amp) and you'd expect your battery to take a tumble afeter a couple of days.
  • Megane dynamique trim seat wear 31 Dec 2005 (Forum)
I have a Megane 1.5 DCi 100 sports tourer in dynamique trim level. It is less than 2 years old and 9000 miles. The only problem so far is the drivers seat is already showing signs of the pattern wearing off and the side bolster pile roughing up. I have never had any previous cars suffer from seat wear even after 6 years and 80k miles.
  • VAG diesel ID's and service 7 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Hi I am in the market for a used VAG group diesel, (I know I know Mondeo TDCI yada yada yada) Following a conversation with an old school style VW sales guy last night I am a bit confused. Is there a definitive way to tell the difference between the different BHP models on the car, without going to the tax book? I drove 2 Bora?
  • Replacement 7 seater 11 Nov 2005 (Forum)
As you know, SWMBO has a diesel Trajet and we may let MiL have this on a soft loan. Our Trajet is only 14 months old so MiL is getting the benefit of a professional son-in-law! So the question is.... Frankly, we probably don't need a car the size of the Trajet, but seven seats is very handy. We want automatic and whilst diesel would be handy, we probably only do 10,000 miles pa, so its not vital.
  • "classic" Mercedes - Sell or keep ?? 8 Jul 2005 (Forum)
The second car is a 260 E saloon automatic, from 1988, it is also in very good order but needs a new motor in one electric window, this also drives very well and has a very powerful smooth engine which gives very good performance when needed.
  • Caravan courtesy - I do try! 24 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I've always tried not to hold up other cars too much when pulling a caravan, but last weekend I made a special effort, mindful of recent threads. My observations for what they are worth are; 1) There seem to be fewer lay-byes on A and B roads than there used to be, and no advance warning.
  • New holes for free 26 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Late last month I put my Golf VR6 into the Vauxhall dealer around the corner from me. I asked them to replace the rear number plate, because the old one was stained and would be an MOT failure item. When I collected the car I saw that they had not replaced the plate exactly as it was before, because the metal screw heads were showing as there were no yellow caps on them.
  • A trivial question about air con. 14 Jan 2004 (Forum)
2 days ago I was sat in Manila Airport carpark with the engine running, waiting for a friend to come in from Brunei, cold San Miguel in hand, aircon on full blast (34 C out there), reading the paper and having a jolly good laugh at the idiocy of the campaigns for the upcoming Presidential elections, when the aircon started to blow warm. I fiddled with it, turned the engine on and off, no joy. This is a 2 month old car and I\'m thinking \"warranty claim already? After a few minutes of all this the announcement the plane had landed came over, so I got out the steering wheel lock in readiness to go to the terminal and, in order to fit it, had to straighten the steering wheel.
