  • Oil consumption ? why? 4 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I have noticed that correspondents on this forum often quote oil consumption rates for modern engines. In the past, only old bangers used oil ? a measure of an engine in good condition was that it did not need the oil topping up between changes. My first car, a Triumph Mayflower which cost £10 of carefully saved pocket money, left a smokescreen behind when it pulled away, because the piston rings were worn.
  • Pug 405 Oil Leak from engine mount 22 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Nothing anywhere near what was now dribbling from the sump. I decided at this point (and after perusing this very site), that it might just be the camshaft oil seal. As the timing belt was soaked in oil and needing a change I bought a new belt and both camshaft and crankshaft oil seals. The end of the block seemed pretty dry all over with the timing covers off, but the old belt had definitely been soaked in a mist of oil.
  • Longlife servicing 17 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I check my car regularly for any visible problems and top the oil up if needed. I would appreciate any valid reason why I should change back to yearly/10000 miles/

  • Flushing oil 6 Aug 2007 (Forum)
For various reasons, I have unfortunately let my S80 go a considerable mileage without an oil change. Inexcusable really, but these things sometimes happen :-( I'd like to give the engine an internal 'clean out' if possible. From what I've read, 'flushing oils' have generally had a bad press - apparently causing more problems, like oil leaks from tired seals etc.
  • OK to fill with different oils? 26 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Hi folks, Got to change the oil on a '93 Nissan Sunny 1.4 tomorrow, but the car isn't really relevant. I have four or five part-used bottles of oil. All 10W/40, all semi-synth, all good API SL stuff, all suitable for the car, but three different brands.
  • Mazda cx5 - Mazda CX5 rejection re oil pressure issues 28 Feb 2016 (Forum)
Bought a 2013 Mazda from main dealer in Dec 2014. Before next service was due the oil pressure light came on and a text warned me to stop the vehicle to avoid engine damage.Mazda Assist called, car towed. Courtesy car given...oil change and reprogramme software. I collect car BUT just 5 months later.
  • 53'Passat oil consumption/smoking 9 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Hi hope someone can give me some advice on this! I have a 53 plate passat tdi 130 (dp). 29k. Around town it can eat upto a litre of oil in 300 miles, yet on a long motorway journey it doesn't seem to use any! People following me say the car emmits a puff of grey/black mix every time I change gear, (usually in the rev range of 2-2.5k), other than that I get the usual black fog if I change above 3k revs.

  • Low car ramps 17 May 2007 (Forum)
I've just seen some low car ramps on Wikihow: http://www.wikihow.com/Change-the-Oil-in-Your-Car These must be ideal for jobs when you just need to get the car a few inches off the ground to do things like oil changes. Does anyone know where you can buy these ? I personally don't enjoy driving up big steel ramps.
  • Warranty Length compare to US 18 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I'm a Yank about to buy my first car in England and I'm surprised at how short the warranties are. In the US, warranties of 70-100,00 miles are not unusual. Also Quaker State Oil offers a free 250,000 warranty if your oil is changed (using theirs) every 4000 miles. You can even do the changing yourself if you save the Zebra codes. Is there an equivalent on the UK?
  • BMW 3-Series E36 (1991 - 1998) - 97 1.7 318 gear oil specification ? 8 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I need to change the gearbox oil on a 1997 bmw 318 tds(m41 engine) According to the owners manual the specified oil is denoted by a sticker on the gear box casing...but mine appears to be missing. Would appreciate any info on the recommended oil for this model as most main dealers I have contacted all seem a bit vague on the matter.
  • too much oil...consequences of driving 2 Jun 2006 (Forum)
My friend got given a vectra (W reg) by his brother; he accidentally put in too much oil (the dip stick goes up past the max by about the same amount as the distance between the max and the min). Now it takes a few turn s to start and there was a puff of black smoke.. He hasnt got any inspection ramps or anywhere to safely drain away the oil, is it safe to drive the car about 2 miles to the garage to have the oil changed, or will it cause damage..?
  • oil choice for a classic porsche 911 7 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I've just bought this car as a project. It is still a good runner but the bodywork is a mess. the oil pressure is running a little low, unsuprising after 120k and 30 years of wear. I have no idea what oil is in at the mo but its good and black and probs needs changing. what oil would you guys recommend for a moderate miles 30 year old 911 engine FYI I'm getting about 22psi at 2200 when I should be getting about 30-35ish thanks
  • Autobox oil 6 Oct 2003 (Forum)
(done it since new, Vauxhall say ignore it if there's no metal in the oil.) Would using a different type of oil solve this problem? Thanks in advance!
  • Alfa Romeo 159 (2006 - ) - 07 2.2 Oil gets dirty quickly (petrol engine) 31 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Our 159 2.2 Lusso was recently purchased and despite having had an oil service as scheduled last year (2008), the oil was black. The oil was changed a couple of months ago (2009)at an Alfa dealer and is getting dark quickly. The car only does a low mileage and does not have any 'mayonnaise' under the oil filler cap.
  • Engine Oil Capacity 12 May 2007 (Forum)
Having offered to service a friend's Primera 1.8, I was astounded to read that I only need to put 2.9 litres of oil in it! Compare that to a Vectra 1.8 which requires 4.3 litres of the stuff (that's half as much again!) Why is there such a variation between different car manufacturers, when the oil change intervals are largely the same?!

I'd be grateful if anyone could shed any light on this, as at the moment I am not sure whether to wait to get it serviced in a couple of months time, or whether it needs an immediate oil and filter change and an ecu update.
  • Which Oil Filter for VW Polo Classic 12 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I've got a VW Polo P Reg (97) 1.6 Classic Saloon (100BHP) I bought it in September, and its always been serviced at garages by previous owners. Now its my car - and its been almost 5k miles since last change - and seeing as I'm about to do a long drive through France next week, i've decieded to do a change of oil this weekend. HOWEVER (you knew something was coming!) the oil filter on the car at the moment is a very large diesel oil filter (according the local spares shop who had to check what I was going on about when I said that the one they sold me was too small!).
