  Eighty classic and competition cars to go under the hammer at Race Retro 18 Feb 2019 (News)
  A restored, original 1958 Porsche 356 A Speedster tops the catalogue with an estimate of £280,000 to £320,000. Of the supercars at the sale, a 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT powered by a 6.2-litre V12 engine, one of only nine UK-supplied cars and with just 17,000 recorded miles, is estimated at £220,000 to £250,000. In addition, an ultra-rare, one of only five, UK, 2018 Audi R8 Sport Performance Parts Editions, with just one previous owner and only 70 miles on the clock, is expected to sell for between £160,000 and £180,000.

  Aston Martin DBR1 to go under the hammer at Monterey auction 12 Jul 2017 (News)
  . RM Sotheby’s is to auction the 1956 Aston Martin DBR1 at its Monterey sale, held on 18-19 August during the Pebble Beach conours d’elegance. DBR1 is Aston’s equivalent to the Ferrari 250 GTO and the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR and was driven by David Brown’s desire to win the Le Mans 24 hour race. The first of just five examples built by the factory between 1956 and 1958, DBR1/1 was a purpose-built competition car developed by racing design chief, Ted Cutting. It boasted a lighter, faster 3.0-litre engine than its DB3S predecessor, set into a small tube spaceframe chassis with an all-new rear end. The gearbox was replaced by the new semi-dry sump, five-speed transaxle, and the new racer was equipped with cast-iron Girling disc brakes with groundbreaking light alloy calipers.

  This RHD 1959 Mercedes Benz 220S Ponton spend most of its life in the relatively dry climate of Victoria, Australia where it was retro-fitted with contemporary airconditioning. It was not shipped to the UK until 2015 so, while the paint bears a few imperfections, there is none of the usual rot.

  The event’s oldest car is a 1927 Bentley 4½-litre entered by Martin and Olivia Hunt, and in the pre-1941 Vintageant class it’s up against a later, ‘Derby’ Bentley, a Rolls-Royce Phantom II, a pair of Alvis Speed 25s and a 1936 Packard Super 8. In the pre-1975 Classic class Mercedes-Benz is the weapon of choice, with three ‘Pagoda’ SLs being joined by a later, 1976 model and a 1966 230 saloon. Greg and Liz Newton in their Jaguar E-type Having to punch above its weight is a 1967 VW Beetle, but potentially high temperatures could favour the air-cooled American entry.

  Entries in this element of the sale include a low-mileage 2003 BMW M3 (£6000-£8000), and a 2006 Mercedes-Benz 500SL with Bose hi-fi upgrade (£10,000-£12,000). There’s also a Mulliner-specification 2004 Bentley Continental GT with quilted leather interior (£22,500-£24,500).

  F1 engine builder Brian Hart dies aged 77 7 Jan 2014 (News)
  Hart parted ways with Jordan at the end of the 1994 season and continued to supply Arrows (1995, 1996) and Mindardi (1997), but a lack of funds meant that his company struggled to compete with the likes of Renault and Mercedes-Benz. In 1997 Brian Hart sold his company to Tom Wilkinshaw and left motor sport altogether.

  The dramatic proportions were emphasized by its 1092mm height and drag co-efficient of 0.34 (way better than any of its rivals). Its piece de resistance was those gullwing doors. Unlike those fitted to the Mercedes-Benz 300SL or De Lorean DMC-12, these doors didn’t include roof panels (rather like the Lamborghini Marzal), making entry and exit somewhat awkward – still they certainly added drama. The Bulldog was powered by a 600bhp twin-turbo version of Tadek Marek’s impressive Aston Martin V8 and, unlike any of its production counterparts, was mid-mounted in true supercar style.

This example has power steering and spent its early life in Florida.

  After brisk trading on the floor and with fervent activity post-sale - including the imminent conclusion of eight Lots - Historics is anticipating 56% of all consignments to have sold, grossing a total sale of approximately £1 million. Star of the show was a 1958 Mercedes-Benz 190SL, which despite not making the sale due to the weather – along with four other cars – sold for £68,884, some 53% higher than its estimate. The Park Ward-styled Alvis TD21 proved its growing popularity, with a two owner from new 1959 Drophead Coupé selling for a robust £54,757.
