  • Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 2002 1.9 HDi turbo failure 5 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I've been running a 2002 406 HDi for a month or so and now realise the turbo just doesn't work (used to drive a petrol Astra, so no real comparison. Going up hill, or accelerating away from the lights - there's just no turbo at all.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1998 1.9 turbo diesel head gasket 30 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Just posted a question about running cool and then went out to check filler cap and found a thin line of tell-tale creamy stuff around filler cap. Is this the start of head gasket going? Is it irreversible - is it safe to take on a long trip, is it too expensive to get fixed at a garage (how much), should I just get rid of it (it's a clean car with 76000 on it) Please, any advice would be hugely welcome.
  • Vauxhall 2.2 petrol engine - any views ? 27 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Probably mainstream to keep costs sensible. So, looking at ( another ) Mondeo estate or Vectra estate / Signum to run alongside ageing Mondeo estate as backup / potential successor. Seems, on paper at least, that the GM 2.2 petrol engine combines a good blend of reasonable frugality with performance. Any views, thoughts or experiences ?
  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 99 1.5td Warning Lights/Overvoltage? 25 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Hi, this is driving me nuts! Car was running fine then occasionally after first driving away, the ABS and Airbag warning lights would come on, ABS first. The tach will also drop to zero revs for a second or two then bounce back up. The lights would go out when ever I changed gear so its seems they come on at 1100 rpm and above.
  • Government to slow expansion of bio-fuels 8 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Yet again we have a policy decision they cannot stick to because they do not think things through adequately. I find it staggering that people like this are actually running the country !!!
  • Mitsubishi Shogun (1999 - 2007) - 96 3.0 V6 petrol misfire problem 2 Jul 2008 (Forum)

  • Volkswagen Polo III (1994 - 1999) - 97 1.6 Leaky front passenger footwell 29 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Water appears to be leaking over the door rubber at the bottom of the door as when you open the door you can see the door rubber has water running along it. Any suggestions? Thank you
  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 1996 1.2 8V - temp gauge occasionally gets too hot 20 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Car runs fine if ambient is less than 70 F/ 20 C. Last w/e we went out at 10.00, and had to put the heater on to cool the engine circuit as the temp gauge was heading for 100 C. Turning on heater full blast (!)
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 97 1.9 LUCAS-CAV stop solenoid u/s in XUD9 4 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I have just fitted a D8A XUD9 into my 306 and the only way i can get it to run is remove the plunger from the stop solenoid. I have tried another solenoid to no affect. The spring and plunger inside both seem OK. When I prime the pump fuel seems to go past the solenoid with ignition turned on.
  • Vauxhall Vectra B facelift (1999 - 2002) - 01 2.2 SRI - Cam chain 2 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Hello, I'm about to buy a non runner Vectra SRI 150 2001. The owner says it stoped working 6 weeks ago, while running. Has been sitting there since than. In the car's descripition hi says "Think some of the teeth on the cam chain have gone, although believe the chain is still intact". I may be going over there to check the car, I would like some hints in what to look for in a try to diagnose the real problem and a ideia on how much would that cost to be fixed.
  • Driving on trade plates 28 May 2008 (Forum)
During an eventful journey home last night, spotted a Merc CLK convertible hurtling down the outside lane at a good (or bad) 90+ mph. Just after he passed me he had to conduct an emergency braking manoeuvre to avoid running into a car that had moved into his lane. He then resumed his frantic pace down lane 3. Only then noticed that the car was driving on trade plates. Could n't help wondering how the owner (or prospective owner) would have viewed the way car was being treated.
  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 1998 1.6 16v 90PS Zetec, Tickover See-saws When En 9 May 2008 (Forum)
Friend has just bought an Escort to run to work. Has 16v 1.6 Zetec 90PS engine. The tickover from cold see-saws rythemically between 1600 & 500 rpm without touching the throttle. If you touch the throttle revs rise to 2000 & if you very slowly release the throttle revs steady at 600rpm.
  • Vauxhall Vectra B facelift (1999 - 2002) - 1999 1.8 parking brake stuck 27 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I went in to hospital 4 weeks ago and forgot to leave the handbrake off my car as it will not be used for a while. My daughter was going to take it for a run tonight for me but the car wont move. Years ago (many years ago) I had a Viva that done the same thing and I forced the car forward. It gave a loud stap/bang and I freed it. Should I do the same for the Vectra or is there another way it can be freed more gently?
  • Renault Scenic (1999 - 2003) - 01 1.9dci loss of drive 12 Apr 2008 (Forum)
SWMBO drove off, changed from 1st to 2nd and lost all drive. Engine runs, clutch feels fine and gears engage, but no drive in any gear when clutch released. No discernible noises. Clutch was replaced 8 months ago and all has seemed well up until now. My thoughts (hopes) are that a CV joint failure, or drive shaft failure is more likely than a clutch or gearbox problem.

  • Vauxhall Astra G Diesel (1998 - 2004) - 1999 - squealing from wheels 2 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Hello, I have read some posts on squealing wheels affecting Vauxhall vehicles but these posts were put up on the site in 2002-04. This is my problem: after the car (Astra 1999) has been running for about 15 to 20 minutes the wheels (both front and now back although it was just the front for a while) start to squeal. The sound goes when turning to the right/left and then returns immediately the car is going straight.
  • Citroen ZX (1992 - 1998) - 1995 1.9TD XUD9 - Fuel pump leak 2 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Hi I have been running this car on 100% veg oil for many months now. It is well known that veg oil attacks rubber and I've been monitoring the fuel pump for any signs of leaks fairly regularly. I have now noticed that there's a small leak which is obviously only going to get worse.
  • Citroen Saxo (1997 - 2003) - '99 1.6 VTR - Headlight replacement 20 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Does anyone know how to remove the old unit? A thin, flimsy body coloured strip of the radiator grille runs under the headlight and meets up with the wing under the indicator. It looks like the whole grille has to come off but I couldn't see how to release the clip by this joint and it looks so fragile that forcing it will snap it.

  • A47 Birmingham Multi Occupancy lane 18 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Had my first experience of this today (for those of you that don't know it - it runs parallel to part of the M6 past Fort Dunlop). http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/carsharelane.bcc I happily drove along it at 11am to much gesticulation and light flashing from those in the other lane, not sure why as it is only in existence until 10am, oh well shaved minutes off my journey time so they do have a useful purpose :-) Was intrigued to know what the offence is if a single occupancy vehicle uses it in its period of operation, the website is not exactly definitive: "Enforcement The car-sharing lane will be enforced by the Police and fines will be issued to offenders found to be contravening the lane."
