  • Road Tax 29 Oct 2001 (Forum)
I recently heard that camers to detect road tax dodgers are in use in London, (soon to be everywhere else as well no doubt), why for god's sake don't they just scrap this outdated nonsense and put 2-3p a litre on fuel instead - those who run bigger engines/do more miles pay more road tax. Think of the benefits: 1)The Government would probably cover the revenue gained from tax discs. 2)Because the treasury could sack a whole workforce of pen-pushers and bureaucrats, they would save money not having to administer the current scheme (they could also shut down the ridiculous 'road tax cheats hotline'). 3)Less queueing/time wasted in post offices. 4)Cash flow of any road haulage company would be enourmously improved (by not having to shell out thousands up front to tax the trucks).
  • Old Jag fixed by AA 7 Apr 2001 (Forum)
Last time I called the AA was an Audi 100 which conked out on the motorway. He diagnosed a faulty fuel pump relay, took the relay to bits by the side of the road and soldered a bad connection. It was a permanent repair. I think the blokes who work for the AA are brilliant. Well worth £95 per year for me and my wife.
  • Kenlowe Hot-Start 7 Feb 2001 (Forum)
I bought Hot-Start, on the basis of its manufacturer's claims that, by heating the coolant to 80C, it eliminates most cold-start wear & high fuel consumption. It has a built-in 3Kw heater & a pump, which is plumbed into the heater circuit. Fitting is claimed to be 'an easy DIY job'. Comments? Well, in the Focus' crowded engine bay, it is most certainly not DIY - took a qualified motor engineer nearly 2 hours.
  • Vauxhall/Audi/Seat - Changing my 2 cars 27 Feb 2015 (Forum)
They lasted well but were scary in dampy conditions as they had little grip and did not instill confidence.   Generally I was happy with the car. Fuel consumption ranged from 48mpg on Asda Fuel to 52-56mpg on BP ultimate. It was comfortable to drive and in my opinion happy particularly good seats. On the downside the engine was hard work to drive.
  • Peugeot 307 - 2 litre Petrol (2002) - Engine runs roughly 20 secs after cold start 18 Nov 2021 (Forum)
Next I had the car analysed and the error code states " misfire on Cylinder (1)". Knowing that the coil pack and spark plugs have been changed I suspected a fuel injector. To isolate this I swapped the injector unit from cylinder 1 to cylinder 2  but the problem remains in cylinder (1), so I believe I have potentially eliminated the fuel injector.  When the car is missing I remove the injector wiring plug connector from cylinder (1) and no difference was noticed to how roughly the engine is running so I suspect that during the engine missing phase injector (1) is being disabled.
  • Toyota Yaris 1.5 - 10,000 miles on 1 Dec 2019 (Forum)
Seemed to be less of a problem when running on Shell V power and it didn’t like supermarket fuels. Never had a car before which ran noticeably better on one fuel that another. Had to take my time changing from 1st to 2nd gear to prevent crunching. This meant that despite its 111hp, it was a slow car to pull away with.
  • Citroen C4 Grand Picasso - Faults on recently purchased used car 13 Feb 2019 (Forum)
White smoke was coming out the back at this point. He plugged in his fault reader and the following codes came up: P0170 - fuel correction bank 7 P0300 - random cylinder misfire P0172 - fuel/air mixture rich P0130 - o2 sensor, bank 7, sensor 2 out of range The AA guy said it could just be a faulty o2 sensor but then again it might not be.
  • Toyota Auris 2.0 D-4D - Persistent engine problems -garage cannot trace it 21 May 2015 (Forum)
I have power loss problems and poor fuel consumption.   Initially, on cold mornings starting was difficult - as if the heater plugs were dead.  Once started it seemed to run quite well.  Consumption soon dropped from 50mpg to 46mpg.
  • Ford Focus ST - Stalling Issue 6 Oct 2014 (Forum)
As I dipped the clutch the revs would drop below 1000 to 500 then to 0. The engine would cut out. An intermittent problem. I use top grade fuels, so it wasn't that. I looked at Honest John car reviews that said there was a problem with this model stalling. I did a search on internet and found pages of complaining owners with the same problem.
  • New car under scrappage or older second hand one? 2 Oct 2009 (Forum)
There is no point on buying an older car, we want something newish which will provide at least five years of reliable motoring. In order to afford to pay the loan back there would have to be big savings in road tax and on fuel bills and also be petrol. The FIAT Panda would be perfect but the boot is too small, it must also be five doors. Any ideas of a brand new car which could fit the bill? I already have a pretty good idea what to look for on the used market.
  • Day trip to Germany - Random Ramblings 9 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Very economical, did 60 miles on 10.5 litres of fuel including some M Way work with no speed limit. Overall a good day out, the deal was that we saved over £500, vis a vis the UK price, on my colleagues small stinky cigarillos! The car was a suprise, for a £45 hire charge but I wouldn't spend my own money on a BMW 1 series!
  • 22% of 3-year old UK cars fail their first MOT 9 May 2008 (Forum)
"Is it because garages do the MoT test before the three-year warranty service instead of after it, which fuels motorists' suspicion that the MoT is being used to show that the service has been done properly? Do manufacturers' service schedules not cover all the points needed to pass a MoT test - if not, why?"
  • Please advise - New car up2 17k 27 Apr 2007 (Forum)

  • Help please with Ford diesel 26 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Is it right that the warranty company can restrict their payout, I believe it is something like £700 that they have paid out. 3. Do you think that replacing the fuel pump is likely to correct this fault. My brother in law borrowed money to buy the car and may now have to borrow again for these repairs. He is also struggling to get to work, which is causing major family problems.
  • The Car Buying Experience 24 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Now I appreciate that if you have two dozen cars on a pitch, one or two may have a flat battery, which is why you have booster packs, but by the same rule, one or two will have bone dry tanks, so wouldn't any dealer who was not bone idle have a gallon of fuel around ? He actually bought the one and only car that (a) he was interested in and (b) had the necessary battery and fuel to enable a test drive. Did he not deserve more if he had £2000 to spend ?

  • Nissan Qashqai ePower - Nissan Qashqai ePower system fault 8 Oct 2023 (Forum)
Our local dealership has, this far, been very good in supplying a courtesy car while hers is in for repair. However, there does seem to be a growing problem. Generator failure, wiring loom issues, fuel leaks and various other issues are coming to light. Whilst we appreciate that all manufacturers can have issues, the ePower system was extensively tested in Japan before release to the wider market.
  • Ford Fiesta - Looking for a new Ford in Essex 28 Mar 2023 (Forum)
Of course, I still want all the practical features that make the Fiesta such a great choice - fuel efficiency, a comfortable interior, and plenty of tech features. But I'm hoping to find a car that's not just functional, but also a reflection of my unique style. So, if you've spotted a Fiesta on the road that caught your eye, or if you've got a custom Fiesta of your own that you're particularly proud of, I'd love to hear about it!
  • Fiat 500 TwinAir Lounge 2015 model (pre-facelift) - The inner LCD screen has gone dark 16 Dec 2022 (Forum)
When I stopped I restarted the car and the same screen remained. This screen is the simple orange LCD one that normally has the fuel gauge on the left and the temperature gauge on the right. When I got home I switched on and off again and this time this screen dimmed (not completely dark} but no gauges or numbers showed. I have looked on line and checked the tailgate wiring, the 5 amp fuse in the "glovebox", and disconnected the "snap on" connector on the negative terminal.
