  • Does Mk3 1.6 Golf have a pierberg carb? 21 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Ever since Mrs S's MR2 got rear ended she has been hankering after another convertible, so having a little time in hand on the way home today we stopped for a impluse look round the local cheap & cheerful cars sales outlet ( ex petrol station; 20/30 cars; £500 to £5k ) 1995 Mk3 convertible, 84k, 1.6 ( I think ) petrol. but it looks like it has a squashed carburettor between the air filter and the inlet manifold; is this the dreaded Pierberg contraption that I read so much about on the forum, or is it a harmless form of fuel injection? We have made no commitment, I dragged her away in order to consult the C by C section. No history, so probably wants a cambelt & water pump, is the screen price of £2.4 too high assuming I could knock off £200/£300 to allow for the cambelt change and sundry brake work?
  • Smoking Peugeot 306 td 14 Mar 2007 (Forum)
It struggles like this until i rev engine, at which point i get loads of blue/white smoke. Once i've done this its ok, however fuel economy is crap getting 150 miles outr of £20 diesel at the moment. Glow plugs are one of the firsyt things i changed when problem started, as well as inj cleaner and redex. Has anyone got any ideas, has anyone got any ideas?
  • Should I buy a 4X4 5 Mar 2007 (Forum)
( for £6500) I thought a Freelander TD4 - but seem to have reliability problems A shogin pinin seems not to have a good towing ability I do like to drive quite quickly but acceleration is more important than top speed, I have to admit for a little bit of boy racer.... so like alloys, side steps etc ! mpg is obviouly and issue, but I don't mind fuel type The mazda has cost me nothing to keep on the road, am I opening myself to big bills with a 4x4? I'd ideally like less than 60,000 miles on the clock and less than 7 yrs old. Can anyone make any suggestions ?
  • ECU and engine sensors 16 Feb 2007 (Forum)
There have been a good few posts about fuel consumption being much lower than the official figures suggest. As someone pointed out in a previous thread, the tests are done on a rolling road at 20- 30C. The urban test begins with a "cold" start, but there are few mornings in the UK when the temperature is 20C, so they hardly represent UK conditions in terms of warming up.
  • Pug 307 2.0l auto 2001 instrument panel 31 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Driving up the M1 in the above car the instruments / cd player started to act up in a rather random way: Speedo dipped then worked ok Rev counter dipped then worked ok CD stopped then started where it left off / at the beginning of the CD or swapped to radio or maybe showed the volume control. Odd warning lights flicked on then off (low fuel/airbag/abs). The odometer 'moved on' several miles and sometimes this whole readout looked as if I had just switched the ignition on - ie ran thru miles to service & oil level before coming up with the odometer and mileometer readings. but ........ the main mileometer always reads ok & the engine / gearbox never seemed to give any trouble.
  • HELP !! Audi A4 V6 idle problem 11 Aug 2006 (Forum)
First port of call ( and cheapest ) was to use the free VAG com software to look for engine error codes but I found none. Then I used some injector cleaner for a couple of tank loads of fuel and had a long motorway blast which also proved fruitless. I know that there are loads of sensors that could effect the running of the car but before I start to change anything at great expense thought I'd try you guys incase anyone has had a similar problem and fixed it, look forward to your response with baited breath !!
  • Puma vs Civic vs 323F vs 406 20 Jul 2006 (Forum)
So for £2,000 I found 1.4 Puma (98S), 1.5 Civic 3dr (97R), Mazda 323F 1.5 Gxi (98R) and 406 Coupe 2.0 (98S). Now the latter is a bit out there (running costs, ins, fuel), and has covered more miles than the rest (100,000 vs. 50,000 for the rest)...but the beauty and practicality draw me to it... what do other backroomer's think? Keep in mind, I could use space to move my stuff to/from uni, and I like driving.
  • Whats the cheapest car to buy and run? 12 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I was wondering about this as im a penny pincher at heart. If you have a budget of £500, what car is the best blend of fuel consumption, parts prices, insurance, servicing costs and reliability. My vote goes to the Reliant Rialto. It was by far the cheapest car ive ever run by a long shot. They may have been expensive when new, but as used cars they are cheap enough and always easy to sell on.
  • Volvo S40: burning clutch smell? 21 Jun 2006 (Forum)
if i switch the car on now, on idle, the exhaust sounds like its 'pattering and when i rev it, it sounds like a car with no fuel in it...chocking,misfiring. can i be right in thinking this is the clutch? the car has done 66k thanks in advance, Skiddy
  • Switching engines from car to car ...!? 24 May 2006 (Forum)
The thread on the Legacy/Forester fuel consumption got me thinking the other day (dangerous, says my wife .....) Some of us own two two cars, or have two cars in the family. What if we had the ability to swop engines from car to car for different journeys, y'know a plug and play type of thing ?!
  • Slow driving 28 Apr 2006 (Forum)
When someone gets behind me I'll then speed up, but often find a sensible pull off to let them past and resume my gentle pace. Does wonders for fuel economy and my stress levels too. Driving for pleasure so often these days seems to mean "as fast as the road conditionss permit, legal or not", which interests me not one jot. Is that unusual? Anyone else?
  • ignition system current starvation 14 Feb 2006 (Forum)
The bike cranks well and all the lights are also ok. However, the pathetic spark will not ignite the fuel air mixture and it floods. The carb' has been stripped, inspected and cleaned and it not at fault. I have heard of a condition called 'current starvation' which I think means that the battery can crank the starter motor, but has not got enough power to concurrently provide sufficient current to the ignition system to produce a strong blue spark.
  • What company car thread but different! 16 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Probably going to be changing role soon to go be work in the field, and so will get car allowance of £5k p/a Rules as follows: No Mondeo, Laguna's, Seat's, Skoda's, or any other typical repmobile. Must have an element of prestige or style. Fuel consumption must be above 24mpg as i dont mind paying for some of this myself. Must be comfy, have pace, lots of kit and not too boy racerish (i.e Subaru's and Mitsi's out). My shortlist so far is: Volvo C70 T5 GT Jag X Type 2.5 or 3.0 V6 BMW M3 E36 EVO BMW 330D Alfa Romeo 156 V6 Audi S3.
  • £8k to spend. What to buy? 28 Nov 2005 (Forum)
I lose my company car in February and so will be back in the world of buying my own tax discs, tyres, fuel, etc. My budget is £8k and ideally would like a car 3 years old with less than 40k miles on the clock. I also need a decent amount of space as I need to fit a pram and shopping in as well as accommodate the usual weekend trips to B&Q and Ikea.
  • Volvo 240 1993 30 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I have tested all sensors, no fault codes and checked all fuses as these are always prone to corrosion. Wnet for a run but car playing up and dose not clear. Suspect fuel pump but it is running anthough the current it takes 3.5 amps at first falls to 1.6 amps after 1 minute, high pressure pump appears noisey but is running. Gave up for today but will have to do pressure checks tomorrow.
  • Vauxhall Carlton stalling 16 Aug 2005 (Forum)
It has good plugs, recent change of air filter and all fluids changed recently. Could it require a new fuel filter which hasn't been done since I've had it. Also I want to replace the distributor cap but it looks to be a nightmare job being hard up against the bulkhead. Surely I don't have to remove the cylinder head to do this??
  • Audi A6 2.5tdi Quattro?Watch out! 12 May 2005 (Forum)
What do I need to watch out on this car Also never had an AUdi Quattro before so what do i need to watch/listen out for? Does the quattro system need regular servicing or anything of the like? ALso whats "real life" fuel consuption like. Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks to all.
  • 306 Dturbo diesel pump and immobiliser 26 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Will I need to swap the pumps over? surely the code is stored in the ECU and that then sends a signal to the fuel shut off valve in the pump? The pump on the new engine is slightly different in that it has a damper and a pipe leading to the oil filler, whereas the old one doesnt have these. Any help will be appreciated.
  • Peugeot 205 Engine Power Loss 29 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Come to a hill, and no matter how much I press the accelerator to the floor, the revs start to fall off and speed drops. Had the car in to a garage, checked the fuel pressure and voltages at plugs, all OK, but they could not find a problem. Put it on to a rolling road, all the chap there could tell me was that it had high HC and he had to advance the timing to 21 degrees at idle to get any power, retard it anything less than this and the power drops away.
  • Leon FR tdi. No thanks 16 Mar 2005 (Forum)
It had a very poor stereo and the seats were very uncomfortable (although I recognise that's a personal thing). Overall, it felt a class below my ZT. Didn't help that the demo I was given had no fuel and was absolutely filthy. On the way home I called in at the Ford dealer and sat in a ST Tdci. It felt much better built and had a high standard spec. The dealer's trying to find me a demo ("very rare", dealer speak for the boss has gone to lunch in it?)
