Smoking Peugeot 306 td - wolfmeister
Hi all, apologies if this subject has been tackled before, i'm a newbie on here. I have a Pug 306 1.9 td. For the last 12 months or so I have had difficulty starting when cold (i.e. mornings or left standing for more than 4 hours). Even if i wait until few seconds after light goes out turns over quite rough, like its running on 3 cylinders. It struggles like this until i rev engine, at which point i get loads of blue/white smoke. Once i've done this its ok, however fuel economy is crap getting 150 miles outr of £20 diesel at the moment.
Glow plugs are one of the firsyt things i changed when problem started, as well as inj cleaner and redex.
Has anyone got any ideas, has anyone got any ideas? One garage said it could be tuning, other said could be injectors.

ANy advice would be appreciated

Cheers

Its possible that your pump timing could be out, and that would need a garage to get it perfectly aligned and timed, also you could get your valve timing checked as if this is out could cause misfiring. As for the injectors if u have one that is faulty this can give the same problem with misfiring, my advice firstly is to get all the timing done this will illiminate buying unessasary parts, if the the timing is ok, then get the injectors pressure checked as this will reveal any faults with them.

Yes it could well be that the pump timing is out, something's not right, that's for sure. A bit of roughness and white smoke (unburnt diesel) on start up is expected, especially on cold mornings as long as it settles down within 10-15 seconds, which mine does. Regarding the poor fuel economy, 150 miles on 20 squids worth of fuel is shockingly bad considering mine does around 220 miles on £20 on average, more on long steady runs. My money's on the pump or valve timing being out, causing misfiring and hence rough running.

sounds like you've got an air leak in the fuel system, most likely places are the injector leak off pipes and around the primer bulb, simple way to check is before you start the car squeeze the primer bulb until it is solid and the car should start alot easier. it's quite cheap to fix just a case of locating the leak and replacing the section of pipe, just locating it can be tricky. as for the economy id suggest giving it a good service as the parts are cheap anyway and secondly how do you drive it? economy can be quite poor if you sit on the motorway at 75mph for long periods or alot of short journeys but rev the car alot

I've had the car 4 years now, I've noticed this problem develop over last 2 years really. I don't my think driving habits have changed significantly over this time. Plus I do about 26 miles each day to work and back, so its getting a decent run.
It is overdue an oil change so, may change this weekend along with fuel filter and air filter plus i'll check the pipes. I'll try the primer trick tonight as well when i start it.
It wouldnt be the turbo which is shafted would it.
I'm also getting a knock from the back when i brake at low speeds or go over bumps, plus it pulls to one side. Does this sound like the shock absorber? Are these easy to change or is a job for a pro?

Its a Peugeot, I doubt very much its the shocks at fault.

Have a look at the trailing arms first as the bearings can wear, if it is the bearings either a good second hand rear beam from scrappy or even a recon one if your planning on keeping the car a few more years.

If the trailing arms are fine then your most likely find its the rear subframe rubber mounts, parts are cheap from gsf or eurocar parts.

rear knock is likely the subframemounts, if there badly worn it will account for the pulling aswell. cheapest source of the parts is buypartsby.com there about £40 for the set of four. easy enough to change can be done one at a time with the axle in place just loosen all 4 mounts slightly so the subframe drops the replace one at a time. if it's degraded over time id definately say it's an air leak in the system just tracing it couldbe fun, generally i replace all the fuel lines from the primer to the fuel pump with clear lines so you can see if there's air there, if there isn't then it's coming from the leak off valves. if there is air you need to check which pipe it's in, either before or after the fuel filter, if it's before carefully check around the primer bulb if it's after check the seal for the fuel filter housing

Hi, I've booked car in at a diesel specialists. The guy suspects it is the pump timing and as cam belt is well overdue I'm having that changed - £130. Will look at the suspension problem once this is sorted.

Thanks all
