Diesel fuel rip-off 1 Sep 2005 (Forum)
We diesel car owners are being ripped off by the oil companies. I have kept records of how the diesel price per litre is made up and it is clear that the... -
Fuel additives - how poisonous?! 28 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I'm asking as I have managed to get Castrol Valvemaster Plus all over my hands, the petrol forecourt and the petrol cap! I don't know who designed the... -
Another 306 diesel problem 3 Jun 2005 (Forum)
It has the keypad immobiliser and I have swapped the diesel pumps over so that I am using the original one to avoid problems with the code that is stored. The problem is that there is no fuel getting past the stop solenoid. The pump is primed, there is diesel entering the pump and leaving the pump via the return to the tank, but none going to the injectors. When I tap in the immobiliser code, you can here the solenoid open, and when you turn off the ignition and wait 30 secs you can feel it close again, but it just wont give me fuel! -
Mercedes W124 advice welcome 18 May 2005 (Forum)
It has had one owner, 78k warranted miles, auto/air con/leather and in all round good clean and sound condition. Just a hint of a fuel leak form the top of the fuel filter, for which it is going in to my local, trusted garage at the end of the week. After a weekend of polishing and cleaning it looks very presentable, just a couple of supermarket dings for dentmaster or whoever to sort. -
Mk 3 Astra - Engine Cuts Out When Idling 20 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Although they have looked at it on two or three occasions, the fault has not occurred when it's been with them. They have tried blowing out fuel line and cleaning the relay. I would really appreciate any suggestions as to what to try for the best. I'm not even sure if it is more likely to be a fuel or electrical problem? Thanks very much Peter -
Peugeot 306 d turbo engine problem 14 Dec 2004 (Forum)
when im driving the car hard (3500 rpm) or over 80 on the motorway occasionally there is a loud diesel clatter and the engine looses power for a second or so and there is a MASSIVE puff of black/blue smoke visible in the rear view mirror. it isnt using any oil or water and there isnt any water in the oil or vice versa, fuel consumption seems no diferent from usual other than that it starts and runs just fine no rattles or smoke (other than what i mentioned above). only that it just doesnt seemd to GO like it used to but im not sure whether thats just me im thinking its maybe a fueling problem, ie kankered pump, worn/dribbling injectors or injection timing, or maybe it somthing more serious please help, im fed up of driving slow and not being able to put my foot down on the motorway for fear its going to self destruct -
More TV products and their claims 5 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Double thread really - first one is to vent my spleen, second is a question for more mechanically minded readers. One shopping channel wound me up again this weekend with their claims about fuel magnets and charged £25 for the privilege of owning a lump of iron which does nothing for your car! The presenter asked the 'salesman' why if the product could save you 10-30% on your fuel costs they aren't fitted as standard. -
Car for huge mileage? 27 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I am now thinking about getting a diesel car. I am not all that bothered about prestige etc. and I think that fuel economy will be my primary concern. My current thoughts are a Citroen C2 1.4 HDI, which has massive fuel economy, but I'm not so keen - a bit of a kids car perhaps? how refined would it be on the motorway, I'm not overly keen on being deafened by the engine! -
Volvo 340 cuts out turning right 16 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I can only think it could be 1) something wrong in petrol tank plumbing (or baffle?) 2) poor fuel pump performance being exposed in "g" conditions or 3) carburettor problems. I have had the carb off recently and found nothing amiss. Certainly made no difference after I had cleaned and checked everything. -
Smokey Smokey Smokey '95 Audi A4 TDi 29 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Sometimes seems to clear, but gets worse particurly when going up hill when at times the car seems to go down on power for a second or two. The car starts ok, has new injectors fitted (yes tried that first), and new fuel oil and air filters. The car has FSH and the engine is smooth enough. My source of diesel is OK. My mechanic says it MIGHT be the fuel pump, but at £600 to replace I would not want to go down this road until sure. -
reluctant Xanti TD starting 15 Nov 2001 (Forum)
A mechanic friend has suggested that it might be running slightly weak but to leave well alone provided it is reliable, as I am averaging about 46 to the gallon. Other mechanics have said it is a known problem with Xantias, and that dealers have tried fuel filter housing replacements, suspected non-original fuel filters, but that no-one has really pinpointed the problem. They say it is a niggling annoyance rather than a reliability problem. -
Polo problems persist 10 Sep 2001 (Forum)
The only thing I can compare it to is driving a car with a manual choke and not having the choke out fully. My car has fuel injection so there's not a lot I can do reagrding the choke!! I've done all the obvious things like new HT leads, spark plugs, fuel filter and temperature sensor but the problem persists. It's more noticable on a cold morning as during the summer it's been not too bad most mornings. -
Vauxhall zafira diesel. - Engine stops after 30 seconds 21 Jan 2023 (Forum)
Not sure if it does it repeatedly. Could it be the tank and sender immersion unit or is there an engine high pressure fuel pump could be to blame? I have no kit to measure pressures. Thanks. Mike -
EVs in a crash 20 Jan 2021 (Forum)
Thinking about the evolution of crumple zones, side-impact bars etc, I started wondering what effect the large heavy battery of an EV has, compared with a traditional fuelled vehicle where the main mass is nearly always at the front. Is an EV's battery where a fuel tank would normally be - and if so, is it not going to cause chaos if a car meets a stationary object ? -
Suitable Family Car 16 Jun 2019 (Forum)
Hi, After a recent addition to the family, I'm looking to buy something a little more family friendly than my ford fiesta zetec 06 plate. I drive 60 miles a day, so looking for something that doesn't eat fuel, and isn't as difficult to overtake. I've been looking at a Ford focus, and my budget is around £5000. Thanks -

Ford Focus Estate - Display's gone crazy 18 Aug 2016 (Forum)
My dash odometer/fuel economy/outside temperature display unit started cycling rapidly through the options too fast to read any of it. So I disconnected the battery and it reset for a while but now the radio unlock code won't enter and I can't reset the clock. -
Clio 11 1.9dti - Relay blown 4 Jan 2016 (Forum)
The relay box is by the battery and relays look hard to get at. First question. Do I need to remove the relay box? Second question. Which one is the fuel pump relay and glow plug? Thanks -
jaguar x type diesel - unknown 25 May 2015 (Forum)
It died completely today however after 10 minutes approx it started but would not rev then died again I think the obvious thing is fuel related but wondered if anyone had experienced this before -
Grand Espace - Engine will not pull power 19 Nov 2014 (Forum)
Having replaced an complete 2.2 engine, new turbo find the engine will not accelerate under load, it runs around ok in auto. But if you floor it the engine dies. No error codes, fuel pressure ok Completely lost now, hindsight should have scrapped it, but invested too much time , money and effort not to sort it.
