  To check whether a V5C or 'The logbook' certificate is genuine, prior to the purchase of a vehicle, they should ring the DVLA?s helpline on 0870 241 1878 or visit http://www.direct.gov.uk/motoring The DVLA has urged car buyers to check the serial number on the top right hand corner of the V5C registration certificate. If it bears the prefix BG and falls within the range BG 9167501 to BG 9190500, the certificate may be stolen and the DVLA have advised motorists not to purchase the vehicle.

  My 405's advisory on last year's MoT says that both front discs were slightly worn. It's covered just over 3,000 miles since then, as the person I bought it from used it very little. How can I tell if the discs will pass muster this time around?

  Without going to the expense of buying a Haynes manual, does anyone know how to remove the alt. belt on a non power steering, non air con MkIV 1.25 Fiesta (97), Can't find any adjustment on Alternator, it looks like the tensioning wheel/pulley is unbolted and then belt taken off or is it more complex than that?   I have a 2001 ford fiesta 1.6 zetec s, i used a power washer to clean all the rubbish out of my wheel arches about a year ago and after i had cleaned them i turned the ignition and the indicator clicker was going crazy!! it was clicking really fast but the indicators werent flashing, eventually it calmed down but now every time its starts raining or gets damp it does it again occasionally!!!

  Honda have filed a patent on AVTEC for a fully variable valve timing and lift system. The only one currently on the market currently is BMW?s Valvetronic, which also removes the need for a throttle butterfly.   Halfords only seems to sell there own brand 80W90, and a quick look at the Castol site, suggests SMX-S which is a Fully synthetic SAE 75W-85. Does anyone know what is recommended, and where can I find it? or should I stick with the Honda Branded stuff? Regards

  I expect these to be about the same price (£495): 1995 M Vauxhall Cavalier 2ltr GLSi 5 door hatch back met green e/windows s/roof c/lock tow bar 11mo. MOT 5mo. tax. 1995 2.2 Automatic Honda Accord Estate (Aerodeck?), leather , air cond. 5mo. MOT, 10mo. tax. Which might be the better bet, from the point of view of running costs, potential longevity, repairability, style?

  OK, a chauffeur leaves the £80k Merc S class with all the kit and caboodle on his drive overnight, ready for an early start next day. In the morning, the car has gone. Has sophisticated anti theft alarm, coded keys, whatever. No one heard a thing.

  My 1998 1.4 106's coolant temperature warning light is coming on after 2 or 3 miles but there is no evidence of overheating. The coolant level is ok and when I let the car tickover for 10 mins or so the coolant warning light came on well before the cooling fans did suggesting that the car is not getting too hot.
