Renault Scenic (2003 - 2009) - 04 1.9 dCi 120 warning on cold start - glowplugs? 4 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Got a call from SWMBO as I was leaving work this evening that made my blood run cold. The car's showing a yellow "Service" light and shows "CHECK INJECTION" on the trip computer display, but it seems to be running OK. What should I do? I thought about replying with something along the lines of a gallon of unleaded and a lighter, but instead said to pull over and turn the engine off, wait a few seconds and restart. -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 99 2.0 hdi - starting problems P0230 & P1138 24 Jul 2008 (Forum)
My peugeot 306hdi is having starting problems and we are really struggling with what to try next to avoid taking to expensive dealers (not financially possible). The car was running fine and was parked up one day when i went to work, on returning it would only fire up and then cut out again. I took it to a friend with the diagnostics kit and the P0230 and P1138 were showing. -
Diesel injection pump replacement - VEG OIL 20 Jun 2008 (Forum)
They said the reason it wasn't feasable was that this truck comes with Stanadyne injection pumps and these are prone to snapping their shafts under the strain of running veg oil. It's now 132 p and rising ... have found out that Bosch and other diesel pump makers can and do run on veg oil, this from an outfit in Germany that fits these veg oil jobs. So the question is , who can advise whether fitting a replacement Bosch diesel injection pump is possible without much tinkering , and who stocks/ fits them ? -
Nissan Almera (2000 - 2006) - 2004 1.8S Auto erratic mpg after service! 16 Mar 2008 (Forum)
The dealer has said that they can't think of anything that was done on the service that could cause the mpg problem & that all they can do is to do an emissions test (to check the engine's running OK) & 'reset' the engine management system. Has anyone heard of this type of problem (particularly with Nissans!) before or has anyone got any suggestions???? -
Which Used Car for Killer Commute? 9 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Hi folks, Any help and advice would be appreciated. I'm currently looking for a new used car to run into the ground as my 8 year old petrol Mondeo finally starts to give up the ghost and look like costing pots of money to fix. My run is a bit of a killer. It takes me over some very bad roads, plenty of potholes, corners and steep hills. -
1998 Cinquecento SX cuts out 25 May 2007 (Forum)
Hi can anyone help with this problem ? My car usually starts Ok and usually runs fine as long as you don't stop ! If you stop for 5 - 10 minutes or so, the car will sometimes not start unless you put your foot flat on the accelerator fault lights off at this stage. Then when it starts it idles rough with the red injector fault light on. -
BMW 330i sport auto convertible 30 Jan 2007 (Forum)
I could always but an independent one but some of these aren't worth having when you want to claim. I couldn't drive it at the time and am going back next week for a test run. I am told it will do about 29mpg combined which is pretty good. I really would appreciate any views on this deal and also on spending £20k with no warranty! Also views on living with these cars. -
98 Passat 1.8 20v engine vibration 9 Dec 2006 (Forum)
I refitted recon head myself. Used new stretch bolts and all new gaskets. Torque 45/60/180degrees. Initially seemed to run fine and compression ratios were all OK. at 7 bar Also needed to fit new catalyst as old one snapped at ball joint (probally due to standing outside for 6 mnths!). Vibration started to appear after a few hundred miles. -
Mondeo TDCi CR pump info 8 Nov 2006 (Forum)
A Lees, 'Menzies' and Phantom have reported CR pump problems and now jkb080553 has resurrected and old thread in which roly93 quoted the following Technical Service Bulletin: This of course relates specifically to cars that were built at least four and a half years ago and this clearly has not been an ongoing issue over that time however the TSB may provide ammunition for these guys in their respective approaches to their Ford dealers: ________ Model: Mondeo 2001 (Build Date: 10.2001 - 05.2002) (Build Code: 1K - 2J) (Engine: 2.0L DuraTorq-TDCi) Focus 1999 (Build Date: 05.2001 - 05.2002) (Build Code: 1B - 2J) (Engine: 1.8L DuraTorq-TDCi) Subject: Engine running erratically or does not start, due to contamination of fuel injection system caused by cam roller/shoe failure. Summary Should a customer express concern that the engine is running erratically or does not start, a potential cause (within the above mentioned manufacturing time period) is that the fuel pump is unable to deliver the required fuel rail pressure due to wear of the rollers and shoes. -
Ford Focus - Exhausted 28 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Hello all, Not so much a question just a story. Get in the car before, drive off out of the estate and I think to myself, "running a little rough today". Get onto a main road, open her up....nothing. Second gear, running like a tractor. Very odd. Carry on for 10 seconds and as the road inclines, the car...declines. Pull over, turn the engine off and checked for any fault codes. -
heard this on QVC - Surely not! 10 Feb 2005 (Forum)
If so presumably we no longer get a jack or wheelbrace with said motor? I have always assumed tyre weld to be a temporary emergeny repair, I would not fancy running at motorway speed with a tyre full of epanded styrofoam.... If you can run at motorway speed with tyres full of this stuff, surely manufacturers would be filling the tyres at the factory and claiming puncture resistant tyres as standard??? -
Is it just me or is old age creeping on? 21 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I did consider writing to the Royal British Legion and advising them of the address of the ASA but thought better of it, and I didnt see the ad run again. But at least they werre subtle about it, unlike Honda. The implications behind this Honda advert are about as obvious as they can be. Now I enjoy a laugh and a joke, but do others just find this tacky, unpleasant and demeaning. -
Rover 420 30 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I bought an old 420 (about 1995 I think) for my Brother in Law to use as a run about while he's visiting. It had been standing outside unused for about 2 months before I bought it having been part exchanged. Its in excellent condition with no rust or accident damage and has a service history for its whole life. -
BMW Cam lifters 9 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Am I right in thinking that this is an oil starvation problem rather than a tappet problem - If the tappets are worn wouldn't it be noisy all the time? After a long run on the motorway the engine runs relatively quietly, except when I am waiting at lights or travelling slowly in low gears. I have taken the rocker cover off and briefly turned the engine over to see if the oil is correctly lubricating the cam and there is a spray from the oil pipe onto each cam eccentric indicating that there isn't a oil blockage. -

Peugeot 5008 2023 - Peugeot 1.2 engine 24 Aug 2024 (Forum)
I'm considering purchasing a 2023 Peugeot 5008 with the 1.2 PureTech petrol engine. But I'm put off by the fact the rubber cambelt runs in oil. I've heard quite a few horror stories of these belts failing with the debris clogging the oil strainer resulting in total engine failure. My Sons own P208 suffered in this way, fortunately he listened to my advice and didn't drive until it was rectified. -
Estate or SUV 11 Mar 2024 (Forum)
Hi Looking for a bargain suv or estate ideally under £3k We have 3 dogs ( 2 medium and 1 small ) and hence the reason our last car was an XTrail but it became expensive to fix/maintain. Also we shift stuff occasionally and use it for tip runs. We will only do about 4k miles a year so want a petrol ..now the question.. do I go for a reliable old Mk2.5 CRV or similar or a reliable estate such as an avensis/focus or even a subaru otuback. -

On my 1.9 tdi 130bhp mk4 golf i recently purchased its got a problem starting warm or cold the issue is there It doesnt cut out when driving, drives and runs perfect, no smoke The key has to be held on a few seconds extra to start than normal, sometimes this then puts the EML and flashing glow plug light on the dash 'emissions workshop' fault code says p0321 engine speed sensor intermittent Have changed the crankshaft sensor but no different tested a battery from another car that is working good, again no different 096 is the battery size, could this be upgraded to a bigger one?
