HGV - manual or auto 20 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I have never been in the cab of a lorry [well once I was when my previous car had to be towed, but it had 5-speed gears like cars]. I heard that most big lorries have 5 - 16 gears! I like to know how do the drivers operate those gears. I don't even know whether big articulated lorries are manual or automatic. -
Clamp Release Fee 27 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I think I have just seen a record price - £195 to release your car from a clamp, undisclosed amount if they 'tow'. The immediate area has just been re-vamped with up-market shops and the pub carpark is next to the public carpark. People have used the carpark when in the pub attached and got a ticket from the bar to prove they had been there. -

I am currentlydriving a Nissan X trail diesel and my wife has a old pug106 for work, the Nissan is parked up most of time and mainly used for towing with.I am thinking of selling Nissan it is worth around £9k and buying a Mini One around 2002 for my wife to use and a cheap diesel estate for towing.Anyway i don't know alot about the bmw Minis, what should i be looking for and what sort of fuel economy should i expect? -
W123 CE - what to look for? 27 May 2007 (Forum)
I'm selling my camper - too slow, I've decided, and not much use outside the summer months. I'm buying a classic caravan, a 1969 Eriba, from Holland, and I'd like a suitable car to tow it. I realise that the 123 is a bit later, but I do like the look of them. Like most things, it seems there's a range from £300 for a rot box to £lots for a full restoration. What faults are real-show stoppers, and what should I be looking for? -
'03 Mercedes E320 CDI Trans oil cooler 3 May 2007 (Forum)
I tow a large caravan with this car and want to fit an auxilliary oil cooler to the transmission. The people at Kenlowe have been helpful but we need to know which gearbox is in the car, ZF or Borg Warner, also which hydraulic circuit is the existing oil-to-water cooler in, the high supply side or the low return side. -
Kerb weight Mercedes E320CDi W210 14 Sep 2006 (Forum)
The only weight figure in the V5C log book tells me 1780 kg, The chassis plate says 2340, 4440 and 1040 kg but no indication as to what each figure refers to. I need to know which figure to use to calculate the percentage for towing a caravan. Thanks Andrew -- Simplicate and add lightness!! -
Fiat Punto! 24 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I was happily driving along when all of a sudden I could not accelerate anymore. As I moved to hard shoulder my car cut out. I was towed to my local garage and he is looking it at it as we speak. Any suggestions with what he might come up with? Cheers -
Tipping 10 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Last night I had cause to call out the RAC man to recover a car (the new Fiesta seems to have burnt it's clutch out...) He turned up reasonably promptly (40 mins), was helpful, towed the car about 2.5 miles and is getting good feedback on the custoner care card he gave us. Should I have tipped him? If so, how much? Who else might you tip, in a motoring context? (I thought I'd asked this one before but a Forum Search didn't reveal it) -
non starting polo 20 Sep 2005 (Forum)
my 1994 polo gt coupe would not start one wet night.the car a 1300 injection (3f engine) will not start.it was running a short time and then would not start, i tried jumping and towing it to try to start it. there is no spark at the plugs, there was a new dizzy fitted two weeks ago it was running fine until that night. i have just fitted a new coil to it i changed the rotor arm and cap at the same time as it was black and pitted and they are not that expensive, the leads are 4 months old. what do i look at next? -
Camper Vans 19 Aug 2005 (Forum)
To do so you need to camp on the mountain halfway through a stage, so he wants a camper (doesnt fancy towing his caravan up the mountain). He has looked into renting a camper, but has been quoted £900 per week. Does anyone think it would be feasible to buy an old camper, holiday for, say, three weeks, and then sell it again, preferably without losing any money (apart from fuel)? -
good garage list 10 Aug 2005 (Forum)
My other half's 318Ci (E46, 2000V) broke down yesterday, and rather than go straight to the Dealer, I thought I'd try some of the recommended garages on the site for it to be towed to. For all three of those that I tried (PDQ in Bexleyheath & Chislehurst, Steve King Sidcup), the number proved to be unobtainable. Ended up at a place recommended by the Green Flag guy. Perhaps these need to be updated? -
Wheel clamping 20 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I just caught the tail end of an item on wheel clamping on BBCs Watchdog. It centred on a clamping operator who was towing away legally parked cars and (seemingly) getting away with demanding a £200 fee to release the car. Can anyone explain why such operators are allowed to operate outside the law and are not immediately subject to a visit by the police? -
Selby Rail Crash 14 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I have just read the article in the DT about sleeping at the wheel, and was particularly interested in the photo showing the Selby crash. I had always believed that Mr Hart had been driving a car, towing a Landy on a trailer, but the photo would indicate he was driving the Landy. Does anyone know the full facts? As the owner of a Landy, I cannot believe that anyone, no matter how late they had stayed up, could fall asleep at the wheel. -
Cavalier battery change now won't start 7 Dec 2002 (Forum)
It usually started first time every time, replaced ECU and ignition relay, fuel pump working fine. Anyone have any ideas?, will not go on a bump start or whilst being towed either. :( -
wheel clamps 4 May 2002 (Forum)
So - if the car is clamped presumably it will stay there for about an hour until payment is made and the thing can get removed thus causing more obstruction than the illegal parking would most likely have ever caused. I can't see the point at all - just ticket the car or tow it away. -
The dreaded 1.1 Fiesta 19 Dec 2001 (Forum)
This tends to happen when slowing down to negotiate a junction. There's plenty of life in the battery, but it won't fire. If you then tow it, it will start and run perfectly well. The breathers have been cleaned, it does some decent runs, and the oil is the correct grade. I suspect something is going awry with the engine management system. -
AA repairs 28 Aug 2001 (Forum)
She assumed that the repair would last long enough to get her home, but within a few miles the engine began making odd noises. The car had to be towed to a local garage. The garage say that severe overheating has wrecked the engine, and that the AA repair was inadequate. Does she have a claim against the AA for the cost of repairs that might not have been needed if they hadn't got her going again. -
Renault Clio - Broke Down and Towed Away Fees to Get Car Back 14 Nov 2014 (Forum)
Hello Two weeks ago my friend was driving home in the rush-hour traffic and the car broke down. Thinking of the safety of other road users,... -
Hyundai ix20 - What cars will take a 44ins wide load? 30 Sep 2014 (Forum)
The good thing is the ix20/Venga are available with a proper auto box (no horrible automated manual for us), the bad thing is it isn't big enough to tow our caravan. So OK as a replacement for Mrs SDA's ageing Yaris Verso but the search goes on for a 44ins wide tow car. -
Octavia Scout - Is it such a good tower? 22 Jul 2014 (Forum)
The latest road test by David Ross makes much of the Scout's towing capabilities. Sure Skoda are happy to publicise that it'll pull 2000kg and with a relatively light chassis and plenty of oomph coupled with 4WD it sounds as if it should be great. Think again however.
