  • What`s your risk assessment on breakdown? 12 Apr 2008 (Forum)
some comment, I guess I can`t have been alone in days gone by, scorning breakdown services and carrying a massive tool box, spare clutch cable, fuel pump and many other parts that were deemed `a risk`. Then time moves on, the big tool box now out of the car and an AA card carried. That seems a great deal in particular if swapping every year to get a new customer discount.
  • Choice of gears / engine speed for peak efficiency 31 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I wonder if you can tell me if there is a general rule for the best gear/RPM to choose for the best fuel efficiency, or if it all depends on so many variables that there is no general rule. I've often heard that you should drive in the highest gear possible that does not result in the engine labouring.
  • Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 97 1.8 diesel..problem with wiring 30 Mar 2008 (Forum)

  • Honda CR-V II (2002 - 2006) - How is CO2 calculated then? 19 Feb 2008 (Forum)
If I had say a petrol Ford with a V8 and 4.6L and the car did 30MPG over a 300 mile journey and say I had another Ford that was 4 cylinder and small (say Focus or Fiesta) and that also did 30MPG over exactly the same distance (300 miles) would the V8 puff out more CO2 per 30 MPG than the smaller 4 cylinder car? Do different cars output different amounts of CO2 even if they use exactly the same amount of fuel over a given distance? I ask this because I did 300 miles in the Mustang V8 and achieved 30.2 mpg and did exactly the same journey in the CRV and got 30.1 mpg. So I was thinking is there only a certain amount of co2 you can possibly get from burning one litre of petrol or not.
  • Vauxhall Vectra B (1995 - 1999) - 98 2.0 dti runs rough 11 Feb 2008 (Forum)
hi, i have a 98 vectra 2.0 di dtl which starts and drives, but runs lumpy when cold and will not rev above 2,500 rpm, when the engine management light light comes on.i have replaced fuel filter, leak off pipes, maf sensor.Took it to a garage for diagnostic check and they tell me pump has a fault.Curious thing is though is i drove through a deep puddle last week and afterwards normal performance returned [revving fully no light on] but next day back to poor running,do you think ishould try a crank sensor?.
  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 1998 TD - really bad MPG!! 21 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I've checked for leaks and there are none, I've cleaned and blocked off the EGR valve and it's made no difference, brakes aren't binding, engines never smokey, so what the hell is happening to all my fuel? I did think the sender wasn't accurate as when I filled up last time from the red, I got around 45 litres in as I mentioned, but the tank capacity is 55 litres, so I thought the gauge was reading slightly low.
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - 2003 - Air conditioning - making us feel unwell? 14 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Hi, Just purchased a 2003 Astra Elegance estate (Petrol/dual fuel LPG). 1598cc 5 speed manual. Can the air conditioning system be the sole cause (as suggested by my GP) of the nausea, headaches, cold/flu like symptoms that my partner and I have started to jointly encounter since using this vehicle?
  • Which small automatic car? 1 Nov 2007 (Forum)
An automatic Corsa was suggested as that was the learning car (manual), but I suppose they'd be a bit pricey and not offer good value for that very reason. Fuel economy does not matter, nor is any issue about slush-box or CVT transmission. All she wants is a go pedal and stop pedal. Annual mileage will be low and all of it in town but nowhere near Ken's CC area.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 2.0 Hdi - Erratic idle and low rev problem. 19 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I've also noticed that in traffic jams the idle moves up fro 900rpm to 1100rpm when at the higher rpm that's when the previous problem occurs, when at 900rpm no problems at all. Up to now I've had no warning light or anything. Is this just the fuel filter or something much worse? any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Moved as a standalone rather than linger in the nether regions of an older one !
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - ESP & Engine Management lights on - cause? 10 Oct 2007 (Forum)
The engine starts up a bit odd - the engine revs go up & down from about 500-1000, and can cut out when it drops below 500. But, once warmed up it's fine, although the fuel consumption seems to have gone up a bit. It's the 8v engine, has about 100k on the clock. Odd thing it had the same fault (engine management light on) last year and the local Skoda garage replaced a faulty Lambda probe.... any ideas anyone where I should look - I suspect if I take it into most garages they will just start replacing the other Lambda probes but this sounds like there may be a fault somewhere else...

  • Thinking of buying a Polo or Golf 13 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Can I get peoples opinions of the Polo? Is it reliable? Will I be able to get one that isnt a complete shed for the money? How is it on fuel consumption? Can you suggest any alternatives I might want to look into? (I know the budget is low, but that cant be helped at the minute) Many thanks if you can help me. : )
  • 51 Proton Wira EML/electrical problems 23 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Other intermittent faults - and I wonder if these are connected to the above - are malfunctioning of the instrumentation, e.g, rev counter, temp gauge and fuel gauge all giving false readings. No problems with the speedo - yet! Questions: 1 Should I be able to get a main dealer to look at the engine management system again under the terms of the recall?
  • I feel great! Fixed temp gauge problem! 20 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I've never really taken an interest in cars until I bought one and now I think I've got the bug! I can't wait for next week when I'll be doing some more work on it like replacing air/oil/fuel filters and replacing the oil. Oh, and replacing the sparks. I'm fairly confident of being able to do those jobs myself (and maybe a bit of help from Dad) but the timing belt has never been changed and I think that'll have to be left to the experts.

  • Shell Pluspoints now V-Power Club 13 May 2007 (Forum)
The main thing being that you WON'T forget to claim your incentive vouchers, 'cos they'll send 'em anyway!! What you MUST do, is specify the vouchers you prefer, or they'll just be money off fuel - not too much of a problem, unless you're using it as an unofficial perk! Looks like value is around 1p/litre & a similar amount if you have a Shell credit card (also due for re-inventing, shortly) Can't see anything about the confusing targets, from before, to earn the extra points - guess they'll come up with somthing though!
  • Focus TDCi economy... 12 May 2007 (Forum)
Whilst that's certainly an improvement on the 33mpg I used to get from my 1.6 mk1 Focus, it barely covers the extra cost of diesel fuel, let alone inital outlay. Is this normal for around town? I've wondered if it's my driving style: I'm driving it so that I change gears whenever it's above 2,000rpm, except possibly first where it reaches 3,000 (often too soon). could it be that the engine isn't run-in enough yet, having not quite reached 15,000 miles yet?
  • 320cd / 330cd convertible questions.... 7 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I currently travel about 15,000 - 18,000 miles per year and wondered what costs I may incur through servicing, tyres etc... Fuel isn't a problem really ( I currently drive a 1.8 petrol Focus), but would be interested in the mpg that is possible. Also, i'd choose the M-Sport model. I know it has 18" wheels, are these a big problem when travelling at speed ?
