  • Cheap, reliable new diesel car 16 Mar 2005 (Forum)
It really needs to be brand new, 100bhp+ diesel engine but ideally more, have a decent sized boot, decent kit and be comfortable as it'll do at least 35k a year. Good fuel economy and reasonably priced main dealer servicing is important and it will quite likely be used to tow a ligh trailer at some stage. Tricky bit is the money, an absolute max of £15k but ideally something around £13-£14k would be easier to swallow.
  • Which car? 28 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Ideal car VW Polo/ Lupo post-2000 but I know i'm pushing my luck with my budget. I need it: To be VERY economical on fuel (BTW should it be diesel or petrol...?) To be no more than £2000 To be in the lowest of the low insurance bracket (I'm 22) To be small and nippy To be reliable and sturdy - I know nothing about car maintenance and don't really want to learn.
  • Speedo Not working Fiesta XR2i 21 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I originally replaced the temp guage sucessfully after a problem with it but on reassembly everything worked, all dash lights, rev counter and both fuel and temp guage but speedo does not move. I bought a new speedo cable fitted it but no success, I have now tried two whole new instrument clusters from a breakers and again speedo is the only part not working.
  • Tipo Injector Warning Light 5 Dec 2004 (Forum)
My N reg Tipo 1.4 has been a station run stalwart for a few years now, with the odd long run every month as a treat. In the past few weeks the fuel injector warning light on the dash (red with a symbol that my wife thinks looks like a baby's bottle) has been coming on. The handbook states that it's an "injection system malfunction - you may drive to the nearest Fiat service centre".
  • laguna engine failure? 5 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I topped up the tank with some water, about 1 pint, but it made no difference.Plenty of life in the battery, plenty of fuel, not sure what to do now. Any ideas would be much appreciated. I know a bit about cars but I am no expert. I have a Haynes manual but on this occasion it has been no use.
  • Saxo surging 22 Nov 2004 (Forum)
All contacts have been cleaned. All pipes checked for leaks. When I took the plugs out they were sooty. I wonder now if fuel delivery pressure is ok but not really sure if i can check this very accurately. Help !!!!!!!
  • Citroen ZX 1.9 Diesel 16 Nov 2004 (Forum)
I have changed the air filter, and the oil recently (the car is regularly serviced) as well as using some injector cleaner in the fuel, and this had no effect on either the economy or the smell. The car has done 79000 miles - and I am suspecting that it could be the injectors that soon will have to be replaced. It has the Lucas injection pump.
  • Vauxhall Vectra Fuse/Relay Help 14 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Hi, I have a 1997 Vauxhall Vectra V6 SRi, yesterday when i turned the radio on and off very quickly the dash display froze, I had to disconnect the battery to get it to go off. On reconnecting the battery the instrument panel is not working, no speed, fuel gauge, also no indicators, no electric windows and no electric exterior mirrors are working, I have checked all the ordinary fuses within the car all seem to be ok, the radio now works ok again but these new problems have come about.
  • 928vBMW840vXK8vSL 3 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I need to to put my nippers in the back once or twice a week (both under 10). 928 - I can get an outstanding example but fuel is a bit scary, irresponsible even. But in my eyes a true beauty. Solid on depreciation 840 - concerned about whistles and bells sarting go a bit funny with less than hilarious consequences for my wallet - depreciation?????
  • Clio - auto - strange behaviour 24 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Immediately after this it is hesitant to start, however it will start after a few seconds and/or a bit of a gas. After this point the car is fine, and drives superbly. I have been using 97 RON fuel in the last few fill ups instead of the standard 95 found at most petrol stations. Do you think this may be a problem? It idles at about 930rpm in neutral, slightly more when stationary with Drive selected.
  • Veg oil 26 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Also the most amazing thing is there is no noticeable diesel smell any more. Could this change be real, given that the fuel is only 2% veg oil? Is such a weak blend likely to cause any damage to injectors, turbo, catalyst etc. I'm prepared to do an experiment like this because my car's getting on a bit and not worth much.
  • Astra 1.7DTI MPG 23 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Traffic, and plagues of speed limit signs dictate the time of the journey, and I decided that if I am going to be crawling along, I might as well do it in a car the sips fuel and to hell with meaningless 0-60 times. I rarely get the opportunity to top 50mph. I am considering getting either a 1.7DTI Astra or a 1.7DTI ECO4 Astra 2002 model. Can anyone who has driven either of these models advise me of real world mpg that I could expect to get for this kind of journey.
  • Cash v Co.Car Calcs 25 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Servicing Allowance for repairs Allowance for consumables (tyres mostly) Road tax Estimate of depreciation through age/mileage Tax paid on cash allowance Tax not being paid as BIK I've not included fuel as there won't be much difference whether I drive my own or a co car. Does anyone know any leasing/contract hire sites which publish rates for 15,000 miles pa with maintenance rather than the usual 10k no maintenance rates?
  • Lumpy, rusting Micra 22 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Secondly, it is jerky in traffic in first and second gear, being hard to drive slowly as if it is either on or off. It reminded me of my old Mini which was like this - is this a common fault and due to the fuel injection programming, as I have heard? Is there any way around this?
  • Fast motorway driving - Good or bad? 19 Dec 2003 (Forum)
My question is this - am i damaging my car through doing this? The revs at this speed are around 4000 in 5th gear. I am aware that my fuel consumption at this speed is ridiculous, but i am wondering about the long-term effects of driving at a constant speed at high revs for an extended length of time.
  • Hyundai Accent 25 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Evenm when the expansion tank level is significantly low, the problem still occurs, so obviously there is pressure coming from the radiator which causes the overflow. I dont see bubbles in the radiatior coolant. Could the problem still be the head gasket? Fuel economy & power are both down and it seens to have a slight midrange misfire. Suggestions welcome.
  • Rover 214 emissions 19 Nov 2003 (Forum)
A good pal who is an excellent and experienced mechanic has a so far intractable problem. The car has failed its MOT with emissions of 10%. The only symptom other than this is very high fuel consumption which suggests massive overfuelling. The Rover dealer suggested a new lamba sensor which made no difference. The car has since been to the dealer's, who could find no fault with the diagnostics and tried a new ECU - no change.
  • Citroen Synergie 1.9 TD Problems 30 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I have a 1995 Citroen Synergie 1.9TD, it's due an MoT and I know it's going to fail the 'smoke test' due to the amount of black smoke it pukes out when revved hard and the vehicle is staionary. The car has been treated with injector cleaner quite regulary, it doesn't burn any oil and fuel economy is good. The car has always seemed a bit gutless, and there is a noise from the turbo that sounds as if someone's left a window a bit open - the noise isn't too loud, but you can just hear it.
  • Fiesta 1.1 Wheezing, Garage in Surrey? 24 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Hello, My girlfriend's '95 Fiesta 1.1 has developed a problem. It's using approximately 1 third more fuel than usual, it is down on power and when pressing the throttle you can hear a high pitched noise that I can best describe as air being sucked or blown through a small gap. The noise increases in intensity the further the throttle is pressed.
  • New Fiesta 'EAC FAIL' 20 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I thought they finally fixed the problem but just recently the problem has come back, this time I noticed the little LCD panels (fuel and mileage) in my dashboard light up flashing and displaying the message EAC FAIL. I've got an appointment next week for my local Ford to take a look at the car....(this will be their 3rd time looking at this problem!).
