hi there again, thanks for the recommendations on my previous post apart from nissan note, can anyone recommend small auto mpvs for £3000 or under (i previously had a suzuki wagon and an old scenic) i like the high position and space for my son's bike, needs 5 seats(family), doesnt have to be big because mainly just for son and i. previous post summary: Hi I have managed to save £3000 for a car, i cant afford anymore, it needs to be automatic, Under 1.6 preferably Main use is school run, shopping, afterschool activities I hardly ever drive on motorways I do not drive fast I have one child who is 7, we often have his cousins, so 5 seats- our last car only had 4 seats so was not good for us (Suzuki wagon) Not fussed on frills, just something that hopefully will be reliable for next few school years Any advice or recommendations welcome, thanks -
Petrol or Diesel? 21 Mar 2013 (Forum)
I currently have a Honda Civic 2.2 i-cdti but will be looking at some point to change. I would prefer a car with an automatic gearbox and preferably diesel for better economy (depreciation not much of an issue as i will be looking for a car about 2-3 years old) but most diesels now have a dpf as standard which can get clogged. -
1993 VW POLO mk3. - FUEL or SPARKS 25 Feb 2013 (Forum)
At 20 years old and 140,000 miles (10 years / 70k in my ownership) this car owes me NOTHING! It currently drives fine for anything between 8-15 miles then the engine cuts out with symptoms like fuel starvation. -

Ford v Skoda (or others) - Which small/medium auto? 28 May 2012 (Forum)
About 8 years ago I got some excellent advice from you people here in the Back Room Technical forum about what small automatic car to buy. Having had a Clio autobox fail on my, I bought a Polo on your advice and it did sterling service. Now I'm looking to buy another small/medium size automatic (about 3 years old) and I'd really appreciate your views again on the reliability of auto gearboxes. -
BMW 1 Series Convertible - No claims Bonus proof req'd 8 Mar 2011 (Forum)
I had Tesco car insurance on my old Honda and when I got my new BMW decided for the first year to get BMW insurance thrown into the deal. My Tesco insurance came to an end , Tesco Car Ins. insisted that the new years policy documents which they had just sent out had to be sent back (to a leeds address) Now BMW insurance which strangely enough has the same address needs proof that I have 9 yrs NCB by having a copy of documents that I've just sent back sent to them! -

Blooming oil filter! 21 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Then a neighbour lent me his old leather strap filter wrench, that was hopeless in fact! After a couple of hours and blistered hands I phoned my girlfriends brother in law who does a lot with cars and he said he would have it off in a jiffy - he did using a chain filter wrench. -
Hyundai i20 (2009) - At the end of my tether with Hyundai 8 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Approaching end of October, now told a vague "end of the year". Furious as: a) I have paid a deposit b) I have scrapped my car (yes, my decision but based on getting the new one in the middle of September) c) Requests for a courtesy car are falling on deaf ears d) Winter is coming! HELP! -
My turn for an accident. 17 Mar 2010 (Forum)
Left hand lane was solid, I was in the right hand lane which was clear to the lights. I'm approaching a box junction to allow egress from a minor road on the left. A car emerges into the gap left by the courteous driver in the left hand lane. Driver wants to turn right so looks left, he fails to look right as he probably forgot it's two lanes he's crossing and hits the rear wheel arch and wheel of my car. -
Honda Accord Tourer (2003 - 2008) - Miffed With Honda 12 Feb 2010 (Forum)
The cause of the problem was the wiring not having been secured properly and had been cut through on a lip at the top of the tailgate that was razor sharp. I had precisely the same problem when the car was only six months old, but on the opposite side of the tailgate where the wiring of the brake lights was similarly affected. I 'phoned Honda today who declined any goodwill assistance. I appreciate the car is well out of its warranty period, but both faults were due to a manufacturing defect. -
In N Out Garage - Bristol 2 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Anyone used these guys? I know normally that we should all avoid fast fit type places but the Mrs car is due a service (fed up with it bleeping everytime I get in....) but am pretty skint. Has been main dealer serviced to date but is now at 60K and 4 half years old, so not much point following that through now. -
Honda Jazz/Fit (2001 - 2008) - 07 1.4 Dealer 'v' Indy Servicing 11 Jan 2010 (Forum)
My wife has a 2007 Honda Jazz (recently inherited from my Grandad) that will run out of manufacturers warranty in March 2010. We cannot tell exactly how long we'll keep the car and I usually do my own servicing (on a 15 year old discovery). We've never had such a new car before and I have a couple of questions that some of you might be able to help with. 1. Should I get a service/inspection done just before the warranty expires (presumably this will cost me and as it is not due a service i'll be duplicating effort) 2. -
Scrappage scheme problem 10 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Hello all, I'm having a bit of a problem picking up my new Alfa. We put an old Peugeot 106 in for scrapping about 12 weeks ago, got told everything approved a few weeks back and we went to collect new car yesterday. Unfortunately it turns out our address on Peugeot logbook was slightly wrong (We didn't notice and why would you seeing the registration document came to our house) and Alfa dealer saying they can't release new car. -
Ford Fiesta (1989 - 1995) - 1994 1.8d Droning noise 18 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Hi, Feel cheeky as ive just registered and this is my second cry for help,Hope im not pushing my luck but i really dont know anything about cars or engines and being short of cash need to ask and hopefully learn a bit so i can save on garage costs. I have had the car 2 days and noticed today first time i took it for a run, that there is a droning noise that gets louder as i go faster, cant work out if its from front or rear. The best way i can describe it is it sounds like a noisy diff which i had happen yrs ago on an old mk2 escort i think it was which was cured by putting oil in.It seems to start at around 20mph and as i said gets louder with more speed at 70 i cant even hear the radio lol. -
Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 1997 1.2RL Brake and rear wiper problems 16 Jan 2009 (Forum)
It seems to be a lot worse when its cold and wet, and seems to dissapear on dry days. The same noise is made when the handbrake is pulled up whilst the car is rolling slightly. The car stops with no trouble at all but it's very loud and makes me feel pretty unsafe. Any ideas? I've also lost the use of the back windscreen wiper, washer and front washers - all on the same stick. -
Skoda's renaissance 10 Nov 2008 (Forum)
The estate is a good size and rivals the golf very well for space I was most impressed with the Octavia. 1.9 TDI 110 HP which is very smooth and powerful. The interior if the Octavis is excellent, quality materials and a still a nice smell for a 5 yo car. By far the better car of the two As Im used to drive old hacks normally it was a nice change and cant understand why people shrugg skodas and the ilk off so easily What are your thoughts? slt -
L.J.K. Setright and Motoring Writers 25 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I found it a refreshing break from the usual tedious ramblings of Clarkson & co, whose current chat show called 'Top Gear' is an affront to anybody with half an interest in motoring. In all fairness, it was probably JC who got me interested in cars to begin with, when I was an 8 year old lad. That's probably what he's best suited to, attracting the younger audience. I just wish Top Gear would go back to its roots as a motoring show instead of the vulgar, tedious, sad, laddish entertainment show that it has become. -
Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1996 1.3 Drivers door only opens when the engine i 22 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I can live with this it is a fairly minor problem, I assume its that the lock is not reading the code on the keys and thus thinks its a robber trying any old Ford key, but when the engine is running it knows I am not a robber and opens the locks. Is there any easy way to fix this? I don't mind taking the door card off but I don't want to imbolise the car completly if I do something wrong.
