  • Fair price for Passat TDI PD estate 8 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Can any of you guys in the know please tell me what would be a fair price to ask (and realistically expect to get) for my VW Passat in a private sale and where is the best place to advertise it (I have used Autotrader previously). It's a pre-facelift TDI PD 115 Sport estate on an "X" plate and was 6 years old this month, I've owned the car from new and it has done 90,000 miles. It as all the toys as standard (full electric pack, auto dimming mirror, climate control, 6 disk DC, etc., etc.) I would estimate that 90% of the mileage has been long motorway journeys and with only me in the car.

  • K Series RIP ? 7 Jun 2005 (Forum)
At work we have a 1.8 Mondeo that's up for sale for £350 (it's an old MK1 model) so I was thinking of buying the old Mondeo and seeing if the Ford engine will fit. It's a long time since I did a engine transplant and I suspect the main problems will centre around the electronics side.
  • Scrapping old cars (Polo anyone?) 26 May 2004 (Forum)
I didn't expect that to be so difficult. As readers may be aware, I am proud owner of a 1983 Mark ii Polo, 1.1 Formule E. Don't think there's anything...
  • Do new cars make more sense now used prices are so high? 12 Sep 2023 (Ask HJ)

  • EV range and rejection 4 Aug 2023 (Forum)
Basically a buyer has been perfectly happy with his EV and traded it after 3 years for the same car but latest model.  It promised a range of some 285plus miles which he was happy with getting some 250 miles with the old model.  The reality with the new one he says is "barely 200 in cold weather" due he thinks to the new car having a heat pump.
  • Toyota yaris 2011 - suggestions on a bigger car 5 Jan 2023 (Forum)
I am looking to get a bigger car,I have a 9 mo th old baby, two dogs and my Toyota Yaris a 2011 plate is doing very well for its age, under miles at 38,000,no issues and in great condition its just quite small.Am looking to get something bigger, something reliable, safe, an automatic would be a dream,I do not do many miles so a petrol would be fine.I will be trading my Yaris in and getting a loan for the rest but was hoping for something under £12,000 if possible.By suggestions?
  • Ford Fiesta - Dead battery - jump start or buy new battery? 13 Sep 2020 (Forum)
Or have to drive the car for more than an hour to recharge the battery.  I also assume that the old battery may not even hold the charge after recharging?   What would you do?
  • Ford Focus - longevity of current small petrol engines 22 Aug 2018 (Forum)
Does anyone know how the new generation of small petrol engines will last? will they still be going without trouble at 150,000 miles plus. I am thinking of cars such as the Focus/Fiesta with the 1.0 litre turbo or a Fiat 500 with less than 1000cc. Surely they must be stressed more than the old conventional type of petrol engine. I have been keeping my cars for over 100,000 miles and was thinking that my next car could be a small eco boost type if they last that long.
  • Subaru Forester - Subaru Used Car Values 14 Dec 2016 (Forum)
Hi I am looking to buy a used (three year old approx) Subaru Forester XE Petrol Automatic in the next two months for my wife and I am already looking around.  I have found one in the Subaru Helensburgh (I live in Scotland) dealership advertised at £17,995.
  • Used Car Warranty 2 Feb 2014 (Forum)
Hi, I will shortly be in the market for buying a two or three year old Mazda 2 for my daughter. Having checked out some of the local garages, including a couple of main dealers, they all seem to offer a 3 year RAC warranty with the car. This is all well and good.
  • Anyone used Autotrader Quick Sale? 1 Aug 2012 (Forum)
I ask the question because Suresell don't allow a reserve on a car over eight years old and their charges seem disproportionately high on a £2k car. I've had wife's one owner car advertised at a very reasonable price for three weeks with no response. Naturally I assume that the price is too high but TBH I could not go out and get a similar 2/H vehicle for the money so we might as well keep it as a spare for me to use.

  • 1.4 TDI - Skoda Fabia 23 Nov 2011 (Forum)
Hello All, I am starting to consider replacing our trusty 03 Micra, My first thoughts were to get a 3-4 Year old Fabia diesel, I have just read the reviews on HJ however and have been suprised to seem that this car is not as bullet proof as Skodas have seem to become.   Our criteria is that the car will be used for a daily 100 mile comute on a mixture of A roads and country roads.
  • Recommendation needed, budget £1,000 22 Apr 2011 (Forum)
So far I was thinking about a Toyota (avenis) or a Vauxhall (Astra?)... anything really as long as it's a good car. I don't mind if it's 10 years old.  Ideas, recommendations? Any tips on what the best in the class might be?
  • Citroen Xsara Picasso (2000 - 2010) - 00 1.6 Key fob?? 19 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Hi I've just bought a second hand car which unfortunately only came with one basic key (no remote) just the old fashioned blade!!! My question is... If I buy a remote fob from ebay and use the re-programming advise that can be found on the internet and programme the fob to my car will it work to lock/unlock my car?
  • Stinky car - creosote 30 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Was doing some shed clearing over the weekend, including lots of old pots and jars with unknown contents. Now the car absolutely stinks of creosote or something similar. I can't see any evidence of leakage anywhere so I'm hoping it's just "in the air". Leather upholstery btw.
