mondeo 1.8td acceleration probs help!! 20 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Hi all. i have a mondeo 1.8td estate on a S reg 98. the problem im having is that it isnt very quick, dont laugh!!!! what i mean is that the turbo doesnt seem to be cutting in at its full petential, you can feel it cut in at around 2200-2600 or something like that but it has no effect on the speed. its that slow i dont risc overtaking or pulling out . i have know idea what it could be, i have changed the glow plugs, air filter, fuel filters. i cant see know obvious leaks, there is no spillages on my drive , i cant smell fuel when driving or when its idling. thats the first problem secondly............... on the same car, my air bag light came on it started to flash at me , i was told to change the things beside the seats, the things the the seat belts plug into , apparantly the hold a charge of somesort and the old ones may have become discharged, so i changed them and the lights still flashing at me! -
Front tyre wear Mondeo mk2 8 Mar 2007 (Forum)
The Mondeo is coming up due for a new set of front boots, but I'm a little concerned over the wear pattern of the existing ones. The front tyres are Falken ZE512's and have covered just under 20,000 miles. The main part of the tread is down to around 3mm, but the tread within 2cm or so of both inner and outer edges of both front tyres is almost gone. I've had tyres wear on one side due to tracking problems before, but I've never seen tyres wear on both edges before. -
18k to spend - speed & prestige needed 23 Feb 2007 (Forum)
The cars I've thought about are: BMW M3 E46 ('01 ish) -- worried about losing value now new shape is due BMW Z4 ('03) -- A4 Conv 3.0 / 3.0 quat ('02-'03) -- doesn't look that fast on paper (7.6s 0-60) Boxter S ('00 ish) -- Other considerations (where running costs scare me): Maseratti 3200 ('99 ish) Merc CL500 ('01 ish) BMW M5 ('01 ish) Has anyone got any feedback? Am I right to be scared of the running costs of the cars in the last group? -
Toyota & Honda Diesel Longevity 12 Feb 2007 (Forum)
DOes anyone know what work these engines are likely to need doing at this mileage, and in the next 50,000 or so miles ? I know these co.'s petrol engines are pretty bulletproof and good for £150k + ( I have an old petrol toyota now) but will this carry onto the new diesel engines ? My dad had one of the old-style citroen diesels and I know injectors and glow-plugs need replacing after a while. -

Suggestions for my next car 21 Jan 2007 (Forum)
It's not a great car, but it does the job well enough and if I keep the speed down to a steady 60 on the motorway I get very good MPG. It works out a about 45MPG when driven this way. Trouble is I used to own a S Type Jag (3.0 petrol) before this and I feel the Polo lacks, how shall I put it, a bit of finesse. As I do more than average miles per year am I better off buying a higher mileage car to begin with [which should be cheaper] and just pile on more miles over the next year or two? -
LR Defender- to buy or not? 17 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Having looked at Autotrader online, prices seem ridiculously high for old (in my opinion) Defender 90's, but I am tempted to make an offer, but do not wish to insult! Does anyone in the BR have an ideas as to a sensible offer price. Presumably if I buy this LR the current owner will be in a position to negotiate a good deal on its replacement, having no part ex. -
Uneven tyre wear - Renault Modus 10 Jan 2007 (Forum)
He has worked for a local tyre fitting firm for 22 years as a tyre fitter so he does have some [relevant] experience on this matter - in my opinion. Apparantly the power steering can cause more 'aggressive' wear than a car without p/s on turns. He has even checked the alignment [not using laser equipment though] and it is within tolerance. Question - should I pay to get a 'proper' laser alignment check done? If so what can I expect to pay? -
Who served you well in 2006? 1 Jan 2007 (Forum)
(Please try and stick to people who have served you well, rather than naming and shaming those who haven't - we'll have to remove those!) My vote(s) go to: Jacksons Basingstoke, where the salesmen were quite happy to spend a long time with me when I was considering the Skoda. It didn't matter to them that it was going to be a company car, like it does to some dealers. -
Merc A-Class - Who are they kidding? 23 Dec 2006 (Forum)
The other thing that made me laugh - how can we be this far along in diesel technology and STILL Merc are making diesels that are rattly and loud - the only improvement between the 1.8 diesel in this A-Class and a 1990's Escort is the lack of vibration, but the noise is just as loud. What a throughly disappointing car. -
How often do you perform basic checks? 14 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Inspired by the Dundee cars thread, how often can you honestly say you check your car(s) over for defects or safety related problems? I tend to check fluids, bulbs and have a cursory check of tyres at some point over a weekend on both cars, although I will admit I am not religious about this. -
stolen keys again 4 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Firstly a cautionary tale and also any useful extra info will be gratefully received. We were burgled a few days ago with a Mini Cooper S being stolen from the drive. They also took keys for a nearly new Audi A6 but not the car (? why). Mini has been recovered with minimal damage but effectively we have one missing and one spare set of keys for each car. the Audi was taken away by the insurance company as it was at risk of being stolen by the culprit returning for second dibs. -

Merc 190 Cosworth 2.5 16V - how rare? 10 Aug 2006 (Forum)
It also needs OS 'A' post outer skin - (the 'A' post itself is fine - the windscreen is bonded to it and didn't smash) My dilemma in fixing/selling stems from it's apparent value/or lack of... Just how many 2.5L 16V cosworth 190's are left out there? How collectible are they (going to be?) should I fix it and keep it as a collectible? I'm worried that the current parkers 'A1 condition' value is about the same as the cost of repairs.... -
Report garage rage? 3 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I got out of my car, and another car pulled up in front (facing the wrong way) and a wiry bloke in his 50's got out, and started abusing me with aggressive expletive strewn language in a strong Scottish (Glasgow?) accent. I ignored him, though I think I said "What?" a few times out of surprise. I filled the tank, and he walked up to me, and again started swearing at me. -
Reliable, cheap French car - possible? 3 Aug 2006 (Forum)
What with the high cost of french s/h cars I'm minded to buy a RHD car in England, run it here for a while to make sure any bugs are sorted out and then drive it to the french holiday house where (with right-hand dipping headlights) it will live out it's natural life. -
Sat Nav - standalone or PDA? 1 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I have just got my latest toy - an XDA Mini S, a phone/PDA combined with lots of twiddly things to play with. The music is very good too when using the headset provided. I would like to put Tomtom on it as well so that I have phone/diary/satnav all in one box and just carry one piece of technology around with me, plus the gps receiver, rather than several. -
No brake lights - what would you do? 9 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I managed to pull to the side of him at a junction and wound the window down to tell him. He couldn't wind his window down (obviously u/s as it was his drivers side window he was trying to drop) and so opened the door, which reveal a lot of rust. He was an early 50s bloke in shirt and tie and cigarette and had a couldn't care less attitude when i told him.
