  • Used Hyundai ix20 - dealer or franchise? 9 Sep 2018 (Forum)
My S-i-L wants me to help her find a new car.  She currently drives our old Renault Modus and after seeking advice on here and elsewhere the consensus is the ix20 should be ideal.  She is going to her local dealer tomorrow for a test drive to be sure it ticks all the boxes (high driving position, good boot space and capable of seating 4).
  • MAZDA CX3 - SERVICE PLANS-PROS AND CONS 17 Jul 2018 (Forum)
I have a confident and cheaper local independent, but doubt whether he has access to all the Mazda gadgetry(s) BUT -assuming the three years of servicing  will mainly  involve just checks, top ups and an oil change-perhaps it's better to just "pay as I go" ?   In fact I have a sneeky feeling the deal might not even include the oil change( anyone know?)
  • Volkswagen Tiguan - Clutch - to replace, or not... 6 Jun 2018 (Forum)
My Dad's 9 year old, 80 odd thousand mile Tiguan 2.0 TDI went in for a service today. He's on some pay monthly service plan with the local VW s******. I've not got the details yet, but they're saying it needs a new clutch. Don't know what's making them suggest this, as there's no clutch slip or strange 'DMF living on borrowed time' noises and there are no shudders, aside from a very slight judder when pulling away first thing in the morning in winter.
  • BHP Doesn't mean much 16 Mar 2018 (Forum)
I drive my son's Sandero (1.2, 75 bhp) and it's a hoot on normal everyday roads when you know what you're doing. As I once again follow Elsie and Betty in their 100 bhp hatchback on their way to M&S for a new cardie at a steady 42 mph on 60 mph limit roads (safe at more than that) I can't help but wonder ...
  • Underbody rustproofing or sealing 8 Feb 2018 (Forum)
So I'm thinking of trying to do some rustproofing of key areas so I don't get future problems.  I have seen hammerite with waxoyl although somebody who was s mechanic in the 80s said they used to use a sealer however water would seep underneath and rust and bubble and make it worse. Is this the case for this product?  Also I have seen Dinitrol which looks good but not as easy to apply, it's also quite expensive.

  • No idea, help! - What car next? 23 Oct 2017 (Forum)

  • Nissan Qashqai - Nissan CVT - is it any good post 2013? 15 Aug 2017 (Forum)
We'd initially discounted the Qashqai CVT but in this weeks Agony column there is a post that has an answer stating "..The Qashqai has a CVT auto that between 2011 and 2013 wasn't  reliable. ..." Does this mean the CVT's in the Qashqai Gen 1's are actually Ok and everything after 2014 is OK? I'd really like to understand if there is a way to have a Qashqai CVT as in every other way it suits what we need in a car. I'm not a new car every three years person and any car we get we'd keep pretty much until it drops (unless it became a money pit) as we hate buying cars and all the hassle that goes along with it.
  • Skoda Citigo - Citigo Vs. 107 12 Aug 2017 (Forum)
Local Skoda dealer says it needs replacing at 160k or 5 years, the salesman says the book makes no mention of it and the interweb is equally confused. I called VW who said the Up!'s belt only needs inspecting at 160k with no replacement necessary. Can anyone advise? Replacing it at c. £300 could swing things in favour of the chain-driven Peugeot (and my wife wins :0) ).
  • Audi A3 - On line car insurance 11 Aug 2017 (Forum)
Rang potential new company and had constructive chat with sales agreeing price-said i would ring back in a couple of hours -having  spoken to my current provider. Result-current provider could not improve on their 30% 2017 hike--other than a few £'s. So-re-contacted the sales agent of new company again  ( after a long telephone wait to get through) said i would like to go ahead with what we agreed 2 hours previously, only to be told that when we had previously spoken there had been "difficulty with the website pricing" (ha ha?)
  • Ford C-Max - Issue after issue with car 10 Apr 2017 (Forum)
I've had the flaming thing 6 months and has nothing but problems, it really stings as it's financed so currently paying for s car that's sat in the garage for long periods of time, I'm in district nursing so need my car, I'm on annual leave this week but god knows what I'll do next week or for weeks after as could take 5 weeks, no second car and no one to borrow off either wish there was some way I could just cut my losses, I can't afford to be paying money out hand over fist for the next 4 years if the first 6 months have been anything to go by
  • Multi-car insurance 29 Mar 2017 (Forum)
An interesting question today in Ask HJ about insuring two cars: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/askhj/answer/76687/what-s-the-cheapest-way-to-insure-two-cars- Our car insurance is due for renewal soon, and we are a three car family- Dacia Logan, Mx5, and my wife's Yaris Hybrid. We have used Aviva multi-car for 2 years, mainly because it was the cheapest option for my wife as these have been her first two years driving.
  • small or medium hatchback 17 Dec 2016 (Forum)
Looking for a stylish hatchback or maybe saloon with good mpg and fastish( ie as opposed to slowish ...0-60 11sec or less ) ..and all for under £3000 We have sort of drawn up a short list...the obvious diesels Golf ,Audi,Leon,Focus,Civic, I30, Mazda3 ...now before the petrol brigade bang on about diesel vs petrol I have to say ouf of the last 5 cars/4x4's we have had the diesels have been the most economical, most reliable...I even have for our dog an old astra 1.7dti van with 225,000 miles on the clock and its brilliant, never goes wrong, 60mpg ...as far as I understand as long as the diesel has been well maintained, regular oil, serviced etc it should be fine .anyway I digress..is there really any different between the ones I have listed in terms of reliability etc...
  • volvo s60 - Skidding Issue 28 Nov 2016 (Forum)
are anti-roll bar and bushes (could explain the knocking), engine mount (but I think I would experience issues when going round bends etc), tracking/balancing (symptoms feel too pronounced for slight tracking issues), shock absorbers, bearing(s). Any ideas, or other tests I could perform to rule things in or out? Many thanks!
  • Puegeot 406 - Fixing Door Locks Where a Key Spins in the Lock 25 Oct 2016 (Forum)
I have seen various postings regarding door locks on older 406's( particularly after a spell of cold weather) where the keys just turn in the lock without functioning.  Sometimes the main dealerships suggest it is down to a worn key or a lock barrel needing replacement ......costs are:  In UK  typically  £180 for a new key and £80 for new lock barrel.....just crazy prices.
  • n/a - School bus driver causes crash gets off with fine 26 Sep 2016 (Forum)

  • Peugeot 106 - Wheel Alignment with cutting boards? 8 Aug 2016 (Forum)
if I got 2 or 3 k-i-t-c-h-e-n cutting mats and laid them on top of each other, and drove over them, I can't see why , the top sheet(s) wouldn't rotate in the direction of the toe in/out mis-alignment. Did people, way back, just use sheets of papaer to see the rotation. I don't need it perfect...just better than it is atm..

  • Ford Ka 1.3l, R Reg (1998) - Ford Ka Braking Issue 25 Jun 2016 (Forum)
A week later he took it to Kwik Fit to fit a new back box on the exhaust and they said the n/s front wheel was red hot, he took it to another garage as he couldn't get hold of his mate, (and still can't), they had it a week and they changed the calipers and master cylinder but the brakes were still binding, they didn't know what else to do so gave it back to him with the brakes still binding and suggested he go to a Ford dealer who might be able to help but he is reluctant to do that as the costs are now mounting and cant really afford the charges.
