Are the goalposts moving faster? 7 Feb 2003 (Forum)
It seems that (a) the buying public has to be continually fed trendy new models so that the big makers can keep their production lines running cost-effectively; (b) at the other end, regulation and the effect of (a) mean that cars 8 or more years old are almost worthless. For some models this is not much longer than the original warranty. -
Miles per gallon 6 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Im trying to work out the maths here and its not working! So, Im putting about 60 quid in the tank a week. I fill it up with around £35 a time and can run for approx. 500 miles on that amount. Adding on about 100 miles for weekend runabouts etc. means Im doing 870 miles a week. I work out that Im getting 30 mpg ... in a diesel? Is this right? Granted, I usually motor at around 85 for about 650 miles of that total. -

Dirty stinky 20 year old diesel buses 20 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Why not tax dirty, stinky, 20 year old diesel double decker buses so much that its cheaper to run a car? Then there will be no need for bus lanes, bus stops, bus stations {turn them into town centre car parks} and so room for a few million more cars on the roads, motorways and in town centres. -
car gas 31 Aug 2002 (Forum)
When I was in the uk I had a gas system fitted to my Ford Explorer. What a disaster it cost more to run it on gas than petrol ,would not change over consistently and cut out for no reason on gas.I have had it removed and had to have the EC remapped. On returning to Germany I talked to Ford and they imform me that their own systems on the mondeo and volvo are also a disaster(unofficially)and the technology does not exist to gaurentee a good convertion on all vehicles.I know there are some succesfull convertions out there but buyer beware. -
merc c240 ticking 5 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Loking for help on 98 c240 auto still with 1 months warranty from merc dealer 1: On turning ignition I get "ticking" rather like flat battery sound but no flat battery. On turning to second position engine fires first time 2: In neutral engine/belts run quietly but on engaging forward or reverse I get engine "squeal" again like fan belt squeal but on returning to neutral squeal diappears. Can be replicated every time you move in or out of gear. Are there problems with transmission and how does it work?? -
Rover 416 Tourer (1995) 25 Apr 2002 (Forum)
The vehicle in question has vented discs but does not have A.B.S The noise can only be described as a metallic graunching/rubbing noise when braking gently after the car has been used for about half an hour. The pads and discs are all in good condition and are well within tolerance. There is no run-out on the disc and even the local supplying Rover dealer does not know why this occurs. The car has just completed 60,000 miles with FSH but this has been happening for some time. -
Power Steering Problem - air??? 7 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Hi, My father has an Opel Zafira 1.8 Elegance, approximately 18months old and low mileage. When the engine is running and the steering wheel is turned, there is a bubbling sound coming from the steering column. Sounds like there could be air in the system? The car drives fine and the power steering works ok. Any ideas as to what the noise could be? -
reassurance 1 Mar 2002 (Forum)
In these days of linked computers it seems such a simple matter of tying them in to each other to make it almost impossible to run a vehicle without one. My suspicious mind makes me think its so easy to do that perhaps there is an hidden agenda insomuch as some minority groups would complain that they are being targetted. The pressure groups would have another battle to fight and so on. -
Zetec engine starting on damp mornings 20 Feb 2002 (Forum)
. > The only problem that I've experienced with it is that on occassions when its damp the car will start, but clearly only on three cylinders. It ofetn runs for a bit never seems to "clear itself" and then dies. Further attempts to start the car only result in you spinning the engine. If it's then left for a few minutes it starts OK. Do you know what could be the cause of the problem? -
VW heater troubles 15 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Is it a simple job to give the whole system a good clean out, replace any decaying pipes and get it up and running? I was thinking of parafin and a rag type of job! thanks -
Golf, Leon, or Volvo 8 Feb 2002 (Forum)
The practicality of the Volvo is the main swaying factor, the Seat is the fun one, but long journeys might be tiring. The Golf runs out of puff past 80 mph.... Any comments? PS I drive 35,000+ miles per year, am 30, and 5 foot 8 if this info will aid anyone. -
Salvage Squad tonight 6 Feb 2002 (Forum)
They made a very nice job of the Bristol restoration - but in two weeks ? PLEEEASE! And the final straw was the engine which had not run for years, transformed into a shiny concours winner in the last 6 hour "all nighter". Wish we all had that golden touch ! Regards, Adam -
refreshing change, 89 polo stalling 2 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Well loved but sick 89 1050cc polo, Has been taking noticeable longer than usual to start recently, and currently dies after about 20 sec of idling, runs ok with a bit of right foot, suspect the in line fuel filter, any other ideas? Spark plugs ok, rotor arm and distributor carp ok, leads ok, coolant and oil look ok. Has had a habit of getting a strong vacuum in the fuel tank making fuel cap difficult to remove. -
Alarming Xantia ! 31 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Typical scenario is, lock car after use at 17:30, weather turns cold (2 deg C or less), alarm goes off about 03:00 next morning. Time varies with temperature (colder = quicker). Run out of ideas. Has anyone else experienced this ?? -
'94 Toyota Camry Estate - Any Good? 24 Jan 2002 (Forum)
My brother is a Service Director at a Toyota dealer chain in the East Midlands, and claims Toyotas never break... Apart from the HJ comments on this site, anyone any experience of running these? Fairly rare, aparrently. They seem cavernous but could be thirsty. And can't be fixed with a nail file and cable ties. rg -

Car life. 6 Jan 2002 (Forum)
But that is not practical politics for those of us whose needs (apart from joyous if illegal blasts) are occasional shopping trips or taking SWMBO to medical appointments and things - and who pay for our own petrol. There must be some mileage at which a car which has done short runs is a better bet than one which has done 200,000 on motorways. 5 miles? 500 miles? 5,000 miles? 50,000 miles?..... Or when it comes to disposing, should one indulge in "positive clocking"? -
cold mornings 5 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Being a noted skinflint I decided against one of those coldstart devices. Conventional wisdom seems to be that you shouldn't run the engine at tickover before moving off. But in my particular circumstances what would you guys suggest is the better option: (i) allow to tickover just whilst scraping off the ice, or (ii)scrape off ice then start engine and go straight up the driveway. -
Volvo 960 24V 15 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Re Volvo 960 24V I am thinking of buying another Volvo - I have a 940GLE estate Early 90's 960 24v saloons appear a great bargin at £1500 to £2000. Driven steadly, on mainly motorway runs, what MPG might I get? I can get low 30s out of my 940. Do any readers own 204 BHP 24V 960s, what do they think, what should I look out for? What do people think of the auto box - any good? Thanks Paul Whitehead
