  • Stale odour from climate control 18 Sep 2003 (Forum)
A slight glitch has appeared in my Leon TDi. When I switch the car on, the climate control starts up and blows air out of the vents as normal, but for the first few seconds the air smells very stale, almost like old socks (yum). It clears very quickly and doesn't return until I start the car again after it's been idle for a while.
  • Selling car problems 13 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I have just sold my old Golf (1988) via ebay. The girl came and picked it up this evening. It was sold as seen, its just been MOT'd and serviced and it has a fair whack on the clock (158k). Apparently, I've just had a call from the new owner that the accelerator has fallen off on the way back.
  • Volkswagen Golf TDI 115 PD - Juddering 2 Apr 2002 (Forum)
The symptoms are that the car (which is only 19 months old and a full UK spec import) judders when you put your foot down on the accelerator. I drove all the way down to London from Manchester and could not reach a speed of over 65 mph.
  • VW Golf oil question & coolant question 17 Oct 2001 (Forum)
It didn't occur to me at the time but the two oil changes prior to the failure had been done using a semi-synthetic, the Quantum stuff that VW sell at dealerships. As far as I could tell all previous oil in the car had been mineral but I thought that it would be a good idea to change to semi-synthetic (not fully synth as it's an old car & I didn't want to dislodge any accumulated rubbish, knacker seals etc.).
  • Help - Which Car - BMW, Audi or Discovery 22 Sep 2024 (Forum)
My choice are; Land Rover Discovery 3, but it's expensive and not the best MPG New Style BMW 5 Touring - Supoosed to be good, haven't driven it yet Audi A4 Avant - Had a diesel for a couple of weeks, great car, good MPG Now my dilemma (it's not a bad dilemma to have) is; A) I want the car to depreciate well. So far the Disco depreciation has been excellent, but it's only just 3 years old, so if i bought now will it depreciate faster when more stock starts showing up?)
  • VW POLO 2023 - Is it right that I pay? 20 May 2024 (Forum)
Fast forward 4 days and they tell me it was due to a manufacturing error because a bung wasn’t tightened enough on the radiator before it was released, my issue is - I’d not long filled my own car up with fuel however having had a curtesy car for 4 days, is it right that I should have to cover the cost of refuelling it if my own car had an issue through no fault of my own? I could understand if I was the one to cause the issue however it’s only 7 months old (thankfully under warranty) and while I’m extremely grateful that I could be provided with a replacement, it’s also left me out of pocket for the fact I’ve had to now refuel a second car.
  • Open to suggestions - New family vehicle 2 Apr 2024 (Forum)
Hello all, I am new to the forums but I am after some advice. I have approximately 9k to spend on a car (I could stretch maybe to 11k, but no more than that). I currently have a 3.0tdi Quattro Audi A5 2007. I have loved the car but it’s getting on a bit and we are extending our family. We will have two 10 year olds and a baby and we will be looking to travel in the new car if we go on any trips away (we are both teachers so we will try to make use of the holidays).

  • Any - Need to make a shortlist 12 Aug 2023 (Forum)
Presumably more space in a car with similar width. I like the looks of the Kia Xceed so thats on the list. Jazz, Puma, Xceed. Any others? I'm probably looking at two year old cars, although if I get mugged with the Focus, I might be looking at spending as little as 15k.
  • Kia Picanto/108 - Small car for new driver £4.5k 31 Jan 2021 (Forum)
My daughter passed her driving test around 5 years ago, and although occasionally driving her boyfriend's SUV she has never had her own car. She now wants to buy a 'first' car - around £4.5k - and has enlisted my help. I have worked on plenty of cars over the years; clutches, timing belts, even a couple of full engine rebuilds.
  • Vw polo - VW POLO 2015 tsi gearbox problem help 12 Mar 2020 (Forum)
My car is now knocking and the growling is constant. I’m really not sure what to do. I’ve had a few opinions and it sounds like he might’ve put the gearbox in incorrectly? I’m not an expert and I’m fully aware I shouldn’t be driving the car as it does need a new gearbox but the cars only done 55k and is 5 years old.
  • car under £1000 / £1500 Thought I would give you a 17 Nov 2019 (Forum)
Thought I would give you a laugh.. My current old estate is on its last legs so will be off the road in 2 weeks( Bought for £300 2 years ago, never let me down so cant complain )  I am a carer so need a reliable cheap car but have a VERY limited budget ideally less than £1000 but if I have to could push to £1500 ( have a very good local mechanic ) I will only do £3k miles a year with car so probably not need a diesel and dont need a big car anymore , not worried about tax really or insurance at my age I wanted something that just was a bit different thats all and really at least a 1.2 engine...
  • Another what car to get 4 Jan 2019 (Forum)
Hi I've need to change my pug 308 HDI  simply due to general maintenance becoming ever more frequent due to age and mileage I've never had a problem with the car or any of my previous HDI engined Peugeot's so was thinking about getting a 2 year old 308 with the 120 diesel or the now obsolete 2 litre diesel 2016 on avensis although seems to be impossible to get an avensis in decent condition as all ex hire etc I commute all motorway 75 miles a day and every three months roughly take the car to Europe to top up the wine and beers :) Now you've heard this a million times- petrol or diesel especially given fact that France is looking to ban diesel altogether and given that I'm in France half a dozen times a year this is worrying.
  • Toyota Verso - Safety of 7-seater cars 4 Sep 2017 (Forum)
Oh and don't like the new CMAX in that as the seats in the second row are not even sized it's hard to fit an adult between two car seats. But our daughter will soon out out of a car seat so this might be less of an issue.
  • Audi A8 - Luxury motoring 19 Jul 2017 (Forum)
I had a Jaguar XF in 2010 from new and to date it was the best car I have driven. I'm looking at Audi A8 / A6 saloons and for £25k you can buy a fairly new car (2 years old) in 3.0L diesel guise with less than 30,000 miles - main dealer prices.  Am I mad?
  • VW T5 Transporter - Used Car Dealer problem - Help!! 12 Jul 2017 (Forum)
The garage the van was brought from have said they will not pay for this repair under any warrantee and have instead offered to give me my money back plus our old car which we part exchanged. They will not give any money towards the works we have already undertaken and the garage is not really local to where we live. We want to keep the van and have the gearbox repaired, what are our options?
  • VW Tiguan - VW software upgrade 29 Sep 2016 (Forum)
The following day I was telephoned and told the car was ready for collection which I did and the fault was significantly better. Today, I took it for a longer trip and could just detect the rattle but once it warmed up, it was back to it's old self; I can live with that.
  • BMW 5 Series - Advice needed 10 week car broken!!!!! 25 Sep 2016 (Forum)
Legally where do I stand with the following:   -Making the warranty company foot the bill. -Failing this the car is only 10 weeks old making the dealership pay for the repair. -Does it help/affect things that the car is on Car finance as I know paying with credit can sometime matter.   Any assistance is appreciated.
  • vw golf plus diesel 1896 cc - glow plugs 6 Dec 2015 (Forum)
My golf plus is 6 years old, and I have had from new, and has done about 75000 miles. I moved to London 2 years ago and from the honest john site and reviews use Volks Autos in Sutton for maintenance. I may sell the car soon but was advised thet the cam belt should be replaced and did not wish to sell the car without having that done and one glow plug was not working so decided to have both jobs done and agreed to a verbal figure of about £650.
  • Zafira a DTI 2L - Oil Leak and smell of burning oil in car. 19 May 2014 (Forum)
He has offered me a deal on a 2008 kia Caren CDTI in replacment but at a further cost to me. He has openly admitted he is not keen to do the gasket as the car is over 10 years old and he cant be sure it will stop the burning oil smell which is pretty strong. SHOULD I GET THE HEAD DONE AND TAKE MY CHANCES FOR FREE?  or cough up about a grand for a newler car with less miles?
