new alfa to take on mini 12 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Alfa plans a return to the US market in late 2008, beginning with expensive sports cars sold through the US dealers that sell its sister brand, Maserati. But the new Mini-fighter is not slated for the United States because the Grande Punto platform was not engineered for US regulations, the report said. The Junior is expected to sell 60,000 to 80,000 units a year, the report added. -
Best-looking car of all time? 29 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Until I went to the International Classic Motor Show last weekend, I didn't have a best-looking car of all time in my mind. Now I have: the Maserati A6G 2000, particularly in its Frua guise, as shown at http://tinyurl.com/uz2e http://tinyurl.com/uz32 Somewhere on the Web I found a photo of it from the show, but I can't find it now. However, the very same car can be seen at http://tinyurl.com/uz4g It appeared in the mid-1950s, designed I think by Zagato, coachbuilt I think by Frua; fewer than a hundred were built. -
Time of life? 5 Feb 2005 (Forum)
In a nutshell it boils down to this: Should I a) Sell the Alfa and buy a new Nissan X-trail SVE DCi as my main personal transport, running up 25,000-30,000 miles per year or b) Keep the Alfa until the wheels fall off, using it as my main car, and spend a not dissimilar amount to the purchase price of a new X-trail on the purchase of a secondhand Maserati 3200GT (likely to be a 1999 or 2000 model, with perhaps 30,000-40,000 miles on it), using it for no more than 5,000-8,000 miles per annum. This would be a "keeper" for as long as I have breathe in my body. -

International Classic Motor Show 12 Nov 2003 (Forum)
It's a major event, spread over halls 7--12, and it runs the whole gamut from the brand new super-Jag (can't recall or find it's name/number), through classics to drool over (e.g. an absolutely superb black 1956 Maserati A6G 2000 -- fewer than 100 built), to some exquisite vintage cars, and from body-panel manufacturers to traders in every widget you could imagine, plus of course a fair sprinkling of tat. The saddest sight was of two glamour girls waiting for punters to fork out £10 to be photographed with them; they looked thoroughly neglected and miserable. -
Italian Style 21 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I had imagined that the sort of people who would work for such a company and in such a clearly image concious environment might have reflected some of that influence in their choice of cars. I had thought that I would see a car park full of Alfas, Maseratis and the like. I was quite wrong. The Managing Director picked me up from the airport in his base model Passat estate. It was newish but not in the first flush of youth. A divisional director took me to dinner at a very swanky eatery and gave me a lift there in his diesel Punto, again a base model. -
New Jaguar XF spotted? 30 Apr 2007 (Forum)
On seeing me doing so, the driver engaged eye contact and promptly drove off but had to pass me in the process. Although wearing a fabric cover, the head-on stance said "Jaguar" or Maserati to me more than anything else, and I noticed that it was a left hooker on foreign plates. I also noticed that the driver now had a passenger, so perhaps with my relative proximity to Gaydon (and Coventry if this was the new XF saloon) this was a case of an engineer unofficially bringing his work home or collecting a colleague. -
BMW 3-Series E90 (2005 - ) - 325D Final installment 24 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I arrive at my cubie daily to, variously, ironic applause, insincere empathy or/and my colleagues holding up improvised ice skating type marker boards with low integers ascribed. They are uniformly true petrol heads. One has two Maseratis, one bought new last September, and a new Ferrari acquired this Christmas. (To my secret delight, it broke down after 100 miles and was taken away on a transporter) Those are just the cars he admits to.
