Selling privately 18 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I read your online advice on selling privately, in particular the security precautions when taking a potential buyer on a test drive. There are a couple of extra precautions I was thinking about, and I wonder if you, or anyone else, had an opinion. Firstly, displaying a mobile phone in an advert rather than a home phone. Secondly, arranging to meet up somewhere neutral for the test drive, so that potential buyers don't know where you live; I heard a tale recently where someone had his car stolen from his garage the night after someone came round for a test drive. -
Mondeo Noisy Drive Belt 16 Jan 2004 (Forum)
My mondy 2000 (98) make a noise from FOS when cold. I finally norrows this down to the Aux Drive belt and decided that perhaps it was too tight but of course it has an automatic adjuster so there is no adjustment. the belt looks ok and is no problem in summer. but it's really noisy when cold. someone told me to put oil on it but i decided against as i would probaly end up with it sliping. -
Quentin Wilson and the car shrink 25 May 2003 (Forum)
I reckon we should clone this psychologist chappie and send his test tube siblings out to train anyone convicted of driving without due care and attention. At their own expense of course. And why isn't this a fundamental part of learning to drive? -
M6\Lakes stop-over recommendations 25 Mar 2003 (Forum)
In a couple of weeks I'm going to be doing my "routine" Watford-Inverness-Watford trip. Normally we drive the 560 odd miles overnight and SWMBO and I take turns at the wheel, while the girls sleep in the back. However due to a recent op, SWMBO will be unable to drive this time so we thought we would drive during the day and stop overnight somewhere along the M6 around J30-40 to break the journey in half(ish) and make it "part" of the holiday. -
Mobile Phone Use 24 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Watching 'Traffic Cops' last night and the eagle eyed officer spotted someone driving using their mobile phone. They were not driving badly, carelessly or erraticly but he pulled the man over and said that he was issuing him with a fixed penaltly fine of £30 but not giving him any points. -
Police prosecution on driver hearsay 14 Jan 2003 (Forum)
It seems that is his word against the other drivers and that there are no other witnesses. For the record he is convinced that he did no dangerous driving as he was taking along his girlfriend (if that clears him!!). He thinks that because he drives an Impreza with a big tail pipe that the people he overtook took exception. Nice to see that the police in north Scotland have nothing better to do!! -

Old car speed camera flashed 4 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Trouble is, I know this person and am reluctant to pass on their identity unless I really have to. I cannot be sure it was them driving though. Does my responsibility to give details on who was driving end when the car no longer belongs to me? I am tempted to say nothing more than "I sold this car several weeks ago and now drive (reg.no of new car)". -
Drink Driving Figures 9 Jan 2002 (Forum)
xml=/news/2002/01/09/ndrink09.xml&sSheet=/news/2002/01/09/ixhome.html The only reason I mention this, is because they are now talking about introducing wider powers for the police to stop motorists who have not committed an offence, but are "suspected" of being drunk. Jonathan PS I do not condone drink driving. -
Motorway Driving 10 Nov 2001 (Forum)
I can't find it in search but I seem to remember he got flak about his comment. I find that in a normal driving conditions you can see the brake lights coming on way ahead and you have prior warning of traffic slowing. When stuck behind a van you react only to his slowing down. Given that one of the best pieces of legislation in recent years was to ban HGVs from the outside lane, shouldn't the Government consider extending this to Vans, People Carriers and Range Rover type vehicles? -

All in one: A Skoda Superb 272 HP 4x4 saloon or estate in Sportline trim may fit the bill if he can get over the badge with 0-60 in 5.6 seconds. It's no lower than a M5 and will hold an awful lot more. Fun to drive? Maybe not so much in corners but assured with four wheel drive and will pull caravan if need be. -
