91 turbo diesel bad MPG - matt
Hi can anyone help me with regards to the above??
I'm only getting 30 ish mpg no matter how I drive it even though I mainly drive 30 miles to and from work each day on a motorway.
generally only drive at about 60 mph.
Anyway its a 1991 model with new airfilter and fuel filter which I fitted a month ago.
ANY ideas will greatly be appreciated as £45 a week is a bit excessive to keep me going to work.
I had another of these cars before and always got at least 50 mpg plus!!!!!!!!!!!1

How are the brakes? Could be some binding. If you only drive at 60mph, it probably do with an Italian tune up.

No the brakes are fine

Sorry I missed this one. I don't think these cars were ever brilliant on fuel The Diesel Car road test achieved 38.7mpg.

One of the reasons may be the inherent design of the cylinder head. Most indirect injection diesels use(d) a variant of the Ricardo Comet head, for which they had to pay a royalty - but Fiat didn't. They developed their own. It was not terribly efficient and was also very smokey.

Would there be any way that I could possibly improve economy??
Smaller injectors or something like that?? I'm not botherd about performance at all just economy..
Forgot to mention that it chucks out a grey coloured smoke almost constantly its not using water or oil so could it be over fuelling if so any ideas how i would adjust it???
